Courageous Conversations: The Injustice of This Moment is Not an Aberration

A facilitated virtual discussion hosted by Courageous Conversations, Haverhill Public Library and Memorial Hall Library. In advance of the event, attendees should watch Michelle Alexander's compelling 2013 talk, The future of race in America: Michelle Alexander at TEDxColumbus. Her January 17, 2020 opinion piece in The New York Times revisits the issues she raised in 2010 with The New Jim Crow and in 2013 at TEDxColumbus. The issues are persistent and urgent, and according to Alexander, "From mass incarceration to mass deportation, our nation remains in deep denial."

Register through Zoom. Memorial Hall Library will be running the Zoom meeting. Please click on the link to register.

About Michelle Alexander: Michelle Alexander is a highly acclaimed civil rights lawyer, advocate, legal scholar and author of The New Jim Crow:  Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness — the bestselling book that helped to transform the national debate on racial and criminal justice in the United States. Since The New Jim Crow was first published in 2010, it has spent nearly 250 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list and has been cited in judicial decisions and adopted in campus-wide and community-wide reads, and has inspired a generation of racial justice activists motivated by Alexander’s unforgettable argument that “we have not ended racial caste in America; we have merely redesigned it.”

Over the years, Alexander has taught at a number of universities, including Stanford Law School, where she was an associate professor of law and directed the Civil Rights Clinic. In 2005, Alexander won a Soros Justice Fellowship that supported the writing of The New Jim Crow and accepted a joint appointment at the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity and the Moritz College of Law at The Ohio State University. Currently she is a visiting professor at Union Theological Seminary in New York City and a contributing opinion writer for The New York Times.

Prior to joining academia, Alexander engaged in civil rights litigation in both the private and nonprofit sector, ultimately serving as the director of the Racial Justice Project for the ACLU of Northern California, where she coordinated the Project’s media advocacy, grassroots organizing, and coalition building and launched a major campaign against racial profiling by law enforcement known as the “DWB Campaign” or “Driving While Black or Brown Campaign.”

Alexander is a graduate of Stanford Law School and Vanderbilt University. She has clerked for Justice Harry A. Blackmun on the U.S. Supreme Court and for Chief Judge Abner Mikva on the D.C. Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals.

Zoom Doodle with Cara Bean

This playful workshop invites participants to draw and sketch in an open and relaxed environment. We begin with a few simple sketching games meant to inspire our imagination. As the session progresses, we generate interesting characters and settings. We then explore how words and pictures can come together to build a basic narrative. Participants write and draw their own stories inspired by their drawings. The final sketches they create culminate in a complete creative experience and are often surprising and always fun.

Cara Bean is the author of Draw 500 Funny Faces and Features and taught art at Lexington High School in Massachusetts for twelve years. She has an MFA in Drawing and Painting from the University of Washington in Seattle and received a certificate in cartooning from the Sequential Artists Workshop in Gainesville, Florida. She provides interactive workshops on creativity with people of all ages and backgrounds in various public forums. Cara is passionate about drawing and believes that the simple act of doodling on paper can lead to the investigation of complex ideas. When she is not teaching, she makes comics that delve into poetic self introspection, playful storytelling and topics relevant to teens and teaching. Cara is currently working on comics projects that speak directly to kids and address mental health. Cara lives in Massachusetts with her husband S.Matt and their dog Raisin.

Ages 11-18, registration required to receive Zoom invite

Supplies needed: pencil and at least 6 blank pages

New England’s woods and wild places are full of stories: cannibalism in Vermont, Thoreau’s cold and lonely night on Massachusetts’ Mt. Greylock, a stagecoach inn in New Hampshire.

Based on the book Inns and Adventures, by Alison O’Leary and Michael J. Tougias, Hidden Gems of New England takes audiences on virtual trips over mountains and through back roads of Vermont, New Hampshire and Western Massachusetts. It’s great inspiration for trip planning!

HISTORY – HIKING – HOSPITALITY – HUMOR

Find out about:

· Secluded swimming holes

· Old-growth forests

· Sites of hostage takings and cannibalism

· Adventure tourism

· Stunning vistas

· Our changing environment

· Cozy inns

The slide presentation is free, open to the public and suitable for all ages. Alison O’Leary is an award-winning travel writer and journalist. Her other books include So Close to Home: The True Story of an American Family’s Fight for Survival During World War II as well as the Appalachian Mountain Club guide Best Day Hikes Near Boston.

This program will be held on Zoom. We will send an email with the Zoom link on the day of the program.

STEM Book Club - Ages 5-8

Just beginning to read chapter books? Then, check out this virtual book club of "Branches" titles. These beginner books have vibrant illustrations and fun characters. Each month we will focus on a different book series and complete a STEM activity. Make sure you register to save your spot. Then, we will send you an email to arrange a pickup time for your copy of this month's book (to keep!) and the supplies for the STEM activity.

This month's book is "Layla and the Bots - Built for Speed" by Vicky Fang and the activity is a build-your-own model car set. This set will take some time and adult-help to put together, so we recommend completing the kit ahead of the book club meeting. Then, you can show-off your new speed racer during the Zoom meeting. Camera and microphone required to fully use Zoom, but you can turn off the camera and mute the mic if you prefer.

Join us once again for a night of cross-town/interstate trivia with our friendly rivals from Plaistow.

Register using the link below to play along. Please include your team name below and the number of players on your team.

Not only are you playing for bragging rights, but restaurant gift certificates will be awarded to top placing teams. The game is targeted towards adults but is open to all ages. Some questions will be Jeopardy level, while others will be easier. Local/regional history will also be featured.

Well-known local trivia host Stephen Wagner will be our quizmaster. This program will be held on Zoom. We will send an email on the day of the program that includes the link as well as additional information about the setup and rules of the game. See you then!

About our host:

Stephen R Wagner is the author of six books and is The Former Poet Laureate of Amesbury, Massachusetts. For the last three years, he's hosted a monthly trivia night for Barewolf Breweries in Amesbury. Stephen's style of trivia eschews a traditional focus on pop culture, and instead looks to explore the fascinating facts of the universe all around us. One fun fact is that Stephen has never actually "attended" a trivia event, himself, yet he's hosted over thirty five well attended trivia nights, for a variety of public and private groups, over the last several years.
