Stop Motion Animation for Teens

This hands-on class teaches the step by step process of creating stop motion animation, from the making of flexible characters out of clay, all the way to the completion of a finished scene. Using more modern frame grabbing technology, to capture images, students will be able to see their progress each day.

Stop Motion is the original film animation. By moving objects, or model characters, between frame exposures on the camera, those same objects, or characters came mysteriously to life, and appeared to move by themselves when the film was played back at regular speed. Such memorable characters as Gumby, Wallace & Gromit, and King Kong (1933), were all brought to life through stop motion.

Limited to 8 participants, so register early. This is a six week course, and you must attend all six. Anyone registered for the first class is automatically registered for the next five.

Tim Smyth is a professional stop motion animator who has animated on the TV shows “Celebrity Deathmatch”, “The P’J’s” “Blake Shelton’s Not So Family Christmas” , and “A Very Pentatonix Christmas” as well as TV and Web spots like Visine, and KRE-O toys. Tim grew up (more or less) in Haverhill, Massachusetts, and was inspired to get into stop motion, and filmmaking, when he was very young, after a viewing of the 1933 film “King Kong”.

I Survived Book Club

This month's selection for the "I Survived" Book Club, authored by Lauren Tarshis, is "I Survived the Battle of Gettysburg, 1863".  "It's 1863, and Thomas and his little sister, Birdie, have fled the farm where they were born and raised as slaves. Following the North Star, looking for freedom, they soon cross paths with a Union soldier. Everything changes: Corporal Henry Green brings Thomas and Birdie back to his regiment, and suddenly it feels like they've found a new home. Best of all, they don't have to find their way north alone--they're marching with the army. But then orders come through: the men are called to battle in Pennsylvania. Thomas had made it so far ... but does he have what it takes to survive Gettysburg?"  This book club is in its 21st month!  We've read all of the books in the series, and, are starting all over again!  For ages 7+.  If you love the book series, register for a fun hour of Jeopardy, trivia, and activities.

Urban Gardening

Urban gardening is about growing food and ornamentals in small spaces.  Whether you have a huge yard without the time or desire to tend it all, or an apartment with no outdoor space at all, this talk will give you tips and techniques to start and maintain a garden you can call your own.

Our speaker is Gretel Anspach,an Overseer of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, a Lifetime Master Gardener with the Massachusetts Master Gardener Association, and a recently-retired systems engineer for Raytheon.  She has volunteered sporadically for the New England Wildflower Society as an adult’s and children’s guide. She considers her horticultural interests to be eclectic.  Gretel helped to establish and maintain two food production gardens that have provided fresh produce to the Marlboro Food Pantry for the last ten years.
