Sci-Fi/Fantasy Book Club

The Science Fiction/Fantasy Book Club meets at 6:00 pm at the library. This month's title is "The Tea Master and the Detective" by Aliette de Bodard. Call to reserve a copy of the book. Pizza will be served, and new members always welcome.

Summary:

A transport ship discharged from military service after a traumatic injury, The Shadow's Child now ekes out a precarious living as a brewer of mind-altering drugs for the comfort of space-travellers. Meanwhile, abrasive and eccentric scholar Long Chau wants to find a corpse for a scientific study. When Long Chau walks into her office, The Shadow's Child expects an unpleasant but easy assignment. When the corpse turns out to have been murdered, Long Chau feels compelled to investigate, dragging The Shadow's Child with her. As they dig deep into the victim's past, The Shadow's Child realises that the investigation points to Long Chau's own murky past--and, ultimately, to the dark and unbearable void that lies between the stars...

This event is sponsored by the Hazen Memorial Library Gift Fund

Water for Soldiers- New England Villages Answer the Call in World War I

Join Paul Przybyla for a book talk about Water for Soldiers: New England Villages Answer the Call in World War I. This book was a two year project of the Shirley Historical Society who brought it to publication.  It was written by Shirley Lawton Houde, a Shirley native who lived in Shirley Village.  She died in 1986 so many people may remember Mrs. Houde walking to the Post Office wearing her signature grey cape.

When  the United States declared war on Germany in April, 1917, the Army immediately authorized the construction of 16 cantonments across the country to be used for training new soldiers. The cantonments were readied for use quickly and thousands of new soldiers suddenly appeared in what had recently been rural locations. Camp Devens, Massachusetts, the first such base to be established, was the point of induction and training of recruits from New England and eastern New York. The Army urged citizens living near Camp Devens and other cantonments to provide a like-home atmosphere and help maintain morale among the soldiers.     Frank and Anna Lawton and their 20-year-old daughter Shirley stepped forward early with an interest in the transformation that their neighborhood was about to experience and a willingness to open their arms and home to the soldiers stationed nearby. The sign “Water for Soldiers” was posted on the front side of the Lawton home and conveyed, literally and figuratively, that soldiers could pour themselves a glass of water – or share a meal, spend a night, or otherwise benefit from the welcoming warmth of the Lawton household. Over the years that followed, as new soldiers were trained, injured soldiers were brought back for medical attention, and veteran soldiers awaited discharge after the end of the war, soldiers from Camp Devens were regularly in the towns and interacting with the residents – and personal friendships developed as a result.     Water for Soldiers is Shirley Lawton Houde’s richly detailed account of the thoughts and experiences of her, her family, and her community as they interacted with the many soldiers during the war years and, as well, of the influences those experiences had on her later in life. Shirley’s memoir provides a rare view of a community’s commitment to and involvement in a national war effort at a venue geographically far removed from the conflict itself.

Books will be available for sale at this event.

Mt. Washington Observatory Tales from the home of the World's Worst Weather

Bitter cold, dense fog, heavy snow, and record winds: Mount Washington is known worldwide for its unpredictable and dangerous weather. For a mountain its size, why is Mt. Washington called the “Home of the World’s Worst Weather”?

This exciting program is appropriate for adults and children alike.

Admission is Free, and this event is funded by the Hazen Memorial Library Endowment Fund

Author Event - The Last Warlord

Meet the author of "The Last Warlord", whose character appears in the movie "12 Strong, The True Declassified Story of the Horsesoldiers".

Professor Brian Glyn Williams has both a scholarly background in Afghanistan and “boots on the ground” credentials in this country of the sort that few academics ensconced in the Ivory Towers possess. He has traveled extensively in Afghanistan tracking suicide bombers for the CIA's Counter Terrorism Center and doing PSYOPs (Psychological Operations) for the U.S. Army's secretive Joint Information Operations Warfare Command. He also has Hollywood links and the character from his book the Last Warlord appears in the Afghan-based movie "12 Strong, The True Declassified Story of the Horsesoldiers" (Dr. Williams advised A List actor Chris Hemsworth, Thor in the Avengers series, on the movie set in New Mexico). See here: https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=-Denciie5oA

As for his scholarly credentials, Dr. Williams has a PhD in Central Asian Islamic history and is a full professor of Islamic History at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (tenure received in 2006, and full professorship 2013) and formerly taught Muslim history at the prestigious University of London. His previous books have been reviewed by the Times, Boston Globe, Wall Street Journal etc., endorsed by former CIA Director General David Petraeus, and one (Predators. The CIA's Drone War on Al Qaeda) was credited by the British rock band Muse in Rolling Stone with inspiring their bestselling, Grammy-winning album "Drones." Previous books have been published by Oxford University Press, Harper Collins, and the military-focused DC-based commercial press Potomac etc. Dr. Williams has testified in terrorism cases at Guantanamo Bay as an expert witness, wrote a manual for the U.S. Army on Afghanistan that was published in a civilian version as Afghanistan Declassified, and recently traveled to the Mosul region in northern Iraq to assist in freeing a Yazidi slave from her ISIS captor.

In addition to his fieldwork in the Islamic world which ranges from Bosnia and Kosovo to the remote tribal zones of Pakistan and the Himalayan warzone of Kashmir, Dr. Williams has trained U.S. Marines deploying to Afghanistan on tribal history and has lectured at Special Operations Command, MacDill Airbase, and U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command and worked for the Directorate of National Intelligence on chemical and biological terror threats to the U.S. Professor Williams has also spent time in the Soviet Union and speaks Russian and Turkish.
