HV Library Writing Group Meeting
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Join us in the Community Room for our new monthly Writers Group!

We will meet the fourth Monday of every month.

For our first literary critique, we'll be reading an excerpt from The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. We'll be examining the first appearance of our title character Jay Gatsby in Chapter 3.

To be sent a scan of the two pages in particular we'll be discussing, contact our Library Assistant, Jakim at jlett@MCLINC.org

We'll be reflecting on the language Fitzgerald uses to paint the mental picture of Gatsby through our narrator Nick Carraway. And whether or not we can see ourselves doing something similar in our own work.

Answer any of these questions to help construct your critique; anywhere from 2-3 paragraphs or less is fine:
  1. What is your takeaway from Nick’s description of Gatsby’s smile? What does this assemblage of adjectives make you feel if anything?
  2. Do you have any favorite lines or phrases from this scene? What sticks out to you? If nothing, which part would you touch up or improve?
  3. Is there any portion of this scene or anywhere else in the book that you’d change? Why? Why not?
  4. Why do you think even after meeting him that Gatsby is still such a mystery to the general public?
  5. What’s your take on Jordan’s famous line on ‘large parties’?
  6. Why do you think Fitzgerald orchestrated the introduction to our title character this way? In what ways does this strategy interact with us, the reader?

Remember to RSVP if you plan to join!

I Want My Mummy
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Stephen R. Phillips. Ph.D., is the Curatorial Research Coordinator in the egyptian Section of the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.

In an effort to better understand why ancient Egyptian mummies hold such a fascination in popular culture, this lecture presents a history of Western civilization's centuries-long interaction with ancient Egypt's human remains, how attitudes regarding those mummies changed through time, and, how mummy-related folklore still influences the modern world. This talk includes unpublished images of the actual mummies of several of Egypt's most famous pharaohs, as well as behind the scenes images of 4,500-year-old mummies as they emerged from the sands during Dr.Phillips' own recent archaeological excavations in the cemeteries adjacent to the Great Pyramids as Giza, Egypt.

Note: this presentation will contain images of mummified ancient Egyptian human remains, presented in a respectful, professional manner to which these once-living individuals are entitled.

This program series is for new recruits, as well as those who have taken part in a previous CSI program at HVL.

Family Stages Presents Hansel & Gretel
2:00 PM - 2:45 PM

Bring the family to this lively, imaginative, two-actor theatrical production of the classic tale, Hansel & Gretel, presented by Family Stages.

Warning to all hungry witches: "Never underestimate the resourcefulness of young children!" In this Brothers Grimm classic tale of breadcrumbs and bonbons, Hansel and Gretel become lost in the woods. There they find a magical gingerbread house covered with goodies. When they are invited into the candy cottage for dinner, they find themselves in hot water (almost), but it's the cook who feels the burn (almost). There is a surprise happy ending for all in the Family Stages version of this not so Grimm fairy tale!

Recommended for families with children ages 3 and up.

Please RSVP.
