All are welcome! This month we are reading The warmth of other suns : the epic story of America's great migration, by Isabel Wilkerson. Copies of the book are available to borrow from the library.

About the book:

Wilkerson chronicles one of the great untold stories of American history: the decades-long migration of black citizens who fled the South for northern and western cities, in search of a better life. From 1915 to 1970, this exodus of almost six million people changed the face of America.

All are welcome! This month we are reading The radium girls : the dark story of America's shining women, by Kate Moore. Copies are available to borrow from the library.

Cover image for The radium girls : the dark story of America's shining women

About the book:

As World War I raged across the globe, hundreds of young women toiled away at the radium-dial factories, where they painted clock faces with a mysterious new substance called radium. Assured by their bosses that the luminous material was safe, the women themselves shone brightly in the dark, covered from head to toe with the glowing dust. With such a coveted job, these "shining girls" were considered the luckiest alive--until they began to fall mysteriously ill. As the fatal poison of the radium took hold, they found themselves embroiled in one of America's biggest scandals and a groundbreaking battle for workers' rights. The Radium Girls explores the strength of extraordinary women in the face of almost impossible circumstances and the astonishing legacy they left behind.

Johnson Lecture Series: Alexandra Fuller

The Louise & Hugh Johnson Lecture series hosts well-known regional and national authors. The library is pleased to announce that the next author for this lecture series will be Alexandra Fuller.

Alexandra Fuller has written five books of non-fiction.  Her debut book, Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight: An African Childhood, was a New York Times Notable Book for 2002, the 2002 Booksense Best Non-fiction book, a finalist for the Guardian’s First Book Award and the winner of the 2002 Winifred Holtby Memorial Prize.  Her 2004 Scribbling the Cat: Travels with an African Soldier won the Ulysses Prize for Art of Reportage.  In 2008, Fuller’s The Legend of Colton H Bryant told the story of a modern-day Wyoming cowboy working on that state’s oil rigs.  She contributed the essay on Wyoming in the 2008 book State by State: A Panoramic Portrait of America. The New York Times Best Selling, Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness, is a prequel/sequel to Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight. Her most recent memoir, about marriage and divorce, is entitled Leaving Before the Rains Come.  Fuller has written for The New Yorker, Vogue, and is a frequent contributor to National Geographic Magazine. Her first novel is Quiet Until the Thaw.

On September 27, Ms. Fuller will read from and discuss her memoirs and first novel (published in 2017), Quiet Until the Thaw. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.

Free. Registration required.  This event begins at 7:30 p.m.  Book sales and cash bar available starting at 6:30 p.m. (Bar will be cash only. No debit/credit cards will be accepted).

The Johnson Lecture Series is made possible by a permanent endowment by Louise & Hugh Johnson. The Johnson endowment was left to and is managed by the Friends of the Library and is intended to enrich the lives of Ipswich residents. Louise and Hugh loved life. They loved books, nature, friends, good food, and each other. They lived together in their treasured Cape Cod style home in Ipswich. Louise was very involved with the Ipswich Public library, the garden club, bird watching, and poetry. Hugh had a background in publishing, loved to fly fish, and cherished Jane Austen's novels (his favorite being Emma).

Cookbook Club

What do you get when you cross a cookbook with a book group?  A Cookbook Club, of course!

Check out a copy of the selected book (starting on November 22) at the library, pick a recipe (we'll keep track to avoid duplicates), and prepare it for the program. We'll sample lots of good food, talk about what worked and what didn't, and select future cookbooks.

This club meets every first Thursday of the month at noon.

December's cookbook title is to be announced.

Registration is required and begins on Thursday, November 22.

Neither the food served at cookbook club nor the facilities have been inspected by the state or the local public health agency.

Click here for all the details!
