All are welcome! This month we are reading Elastic: Flexible Thinking in a Time of Change, by Leonard Mlodinow. Copies are available to borrow from the library.

About the book:
Agroundbreaking new look at the neuroscience of change--and how elastic thinking can help us thrive in a world changing faster than ever before. With rapid technological innovation leading the charge, today's world is transforming itself at an extraordinary and unprecedented pace. As jobs become more multifaceted, as information streams multiply, and as myriad devices place increasing demands on our attention, we are confronted every day with a plethora of new challenges. Fortunately, as Leonard Mlodinow shows, the human brain is uniquely engineered to adapt. Drawing from cutting-edge research in neuroscience and psychology, Mlodinow takes us on a fascinating and illuminating journey through the mechanics of our own minds as we navigate the rapidly shifting landscapes around us.

Johnson Lecture Series: Alexandra Fuller

The Louise & Hugh Johnson Lecture series hosts well-known regional and national authors. The library is pleased to announce that the next author for this lecture series will be Alexandra Fuller.

Alexandra Fuller has written five books of non-fiction.  Her debut book, Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight: An African Childhood, was a New York Times Notable Book for 2002, the 2002 Booksense Best Non-fiction book, a finalist for the Guardian’s First Book Award and the winner of the 2002 Winifred Holtby Memorial Prize.  Her 2004 Scribbling the Cat: Travels with an African Soldier won the Ulysses Prize for Art of Reportage.  In 2008, Fuller’s The Legend of Colton H Bryant told the story of a modern-day Wyoming cowboy working on that state’s oil rigs.  She contributed the essay on Wyoming in the 2008 book State by State: A Panoramic Portrait of America. The New York Times Best Selling, Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness, is a prequel/sequel to Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight. Her most recent memoir, about marriage and divorce, is entitled Leaving Before the Rains Come.  Fuller has written for The New Yorker, Vogue, and is a frequent contributor to National Geographic Magazine. Her first novel is Quiet Until the Thaw.

On September 27, Ms. Fuller will read from and discuss her memoirs and first novel (published in 2017), Quiet Until the Thaw. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.

Free. Registration required.  This event begins at 7:30 p.m.  Book sales and cash bar available starting at 6:30 p.m. (Bar will be cash only. No debit/credit cards will be accepted).

The Johnson Lecture Series is made possible by a permanent endowment by Louise & Hugh Johnson. The Johnson endowment was left to and is managed by the Friends of the Library and is intended to enrich the lives of Ipswich residents. Louise and Hugh loved life. They loved books, nature, friends, good food, and each other. They lived together in their treasured Cape Cod style home in Ipswich. Louise was very involved with the Ipswich Public library, the garden club, bird watching, and poetry. Hugh had a background in publishing, loved to fly fish, and cherished Jane Austen's novels (his favorite being Emma).

Author William Landay

Our 2018 Ipswich Reads...One Book author will read from and discuss his book, the New York Times bestseller Defending Jacob. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing.

About the book:
A fast, compelling, and compulsively readable courtroom drama, Defending Jacob tells the story of a district attorney's son who is accused of killing a classmate. As the father attempts to prove his son's innocence, Landay explores uncomfortable territory. Can a tendency toward violence be inherited? Is the capacity for murder a genetic disposition? Award-winning author William Landay has written the consummate novel of an embattled family in crisis—a suspenseful, character-driven mystery that is also a spellbinding tale of guilt, betrayal, and the terrifying speed at which our lives can spin out of control.

Mr. Landay’s previous novels include Mission Flats, which won the Dagger Award as best debut crime novel of 2003, and The Strangler, which was an L.A. Times favorite crime novel and was nominated for the Strand Magazine Critics Award as best crime novel of 2007.

All are welcome! This month we are reading The Long Haul: A Trucker's Tales of Life on the Road, by Finn Murphy. Copies are available to borrow from the library.

About the book:
More than 30 years ago, Finn Murphy dropped out of college to become a trucker. Since then he's covered hundreds of thousands of miles packing, loading, and hauling people's belongings all over America. Murphy whisks listeners down the I-95 Powerlane, across the Florida Everglades, in and out of the truck stops of the Midwest, and through the steep grades of the Rocky Mountains. He tells funny, poignant, and haunting stories of the people he moves: a hoarder in New Hampshire, a Virginia homeowner raging when Murphy's truck accidentally runs down a stand of trees, a widow rushing her archaeologist husband's remains and relics to a Navajo burial ceremony in New Mexico. Brimming with personality and great characters, The Long Haul explores the appeal of manual labor and shows what happens behind the scenes when we call the movers.

PLEASE NOTE: This program will take place at the Senior Center in the Town Hall, 25 Green Street, Ipswich, MA.

Jeff Klapes, "The Traveling Librarian" will take you on a photographic journey of Epirus, Greece!

Join us for an armchair traveler’s journey to Thessaly and Epirus in central Greece. Far from the beaches and islands most tourists think of when imagining Greece, the mountainous center of the country is rich in historic sites, from the ancient world and the Ottoman era, as well as isolated mountain villages, and the spectacular Byzantine monasteries of Meteora, precariously perched on the top of fantastic rocky peaks. Jeff Klapes is the Head of Reference Services at the Lucius Beebe Memorial Library in Wakefield, Massachusetts.

This program is made possible by a grant from the Coburn Charitable Society.

Non-Fiction Book Group

All are welcome! This month we are reading Flat Broke with Two Goats, by Jennifer McGaha. Copies are available to borrow from the library.

About the book:

Jennifer McGaha never expected to own a goat named Merle. Or to be setting Merle up on dates and naming his doeling Merlene. She didn't expect to be buying organic yogurt for her chickens. She never thought she would be pulling camouflage carpet off her ceiling or rescuing opossums from her barn and calling it "date night." Most importantly, Jennifer never thought she would only have $4.57 in her bank account. When Jennifer discovered that she and her husband owed back taxes—a lot of back taxes—her world changed. Now desperate to save money, they foreclosed on their beloved suburban home and moved their family to a one-hundred-year-old cabin in a North Carolina holler. Soon enough, Jennifer's life began to more closely resemble her Appalachian ancestors than her upper-middle-class upbringing. But what started as a last-ditch effort to settle debts became a journey that revealed both the joys and challenges of living close to the land. Told with bold wit, unflinching honesty, and a firm foot in the traditions of Appalachia, Flat Broke with Two Goats blends stories of homesteading with the journey of two people rediscovering the true meaning of home.

Story Explorers

Story Explorers is a monthly group for first graders centered around stories that represent various genres of literature -- folk tales, fables, myths and legends, and more. Children do not need to be able to read to participate in this program. After a small snack, provided by the library, children listen to a few stories from the genre we are exploring, and then do an age-appropriate craft. Registration is required.
