Our online book discussion group for adults, features a different Humanities discipline - history, literature, philosophy, ethics, archaeology, anthropology, linguistics, geography, the law or legal theory, classics, and cultural or religious studies - each month. We will join a humanities expert for a shared book discussion on Zoom, in the comfort of your own living room. We will alternate monthly between fiction and non-fiction.
This month's selection is Becoming Beauvoir by Kate Kirkpatrick, a fascinating philosophical biography of one of the most important existentialists and feminists of the 20th century.
A symbol of liberated womanhood, Simone de Beauvoir's unconventional relationships inspired and scandalised her generation. A philosopher, writer, and feminist icon, she won prestigious literary prizes and transformed the way we think about gender with The Second Sex. But despite her successes, she wondered if she had sold herself short.
Her liaison with Jean-Paul Sartre has been billed as one of the most legendary love affairs of the twentieth century. But for Beauvoir it came at a cost: for decades she was dismissed as an unoriginal thinker who 'applied' Sartre's ideas. In recent years new material has come to light revealing the ingenuity of Beauvoir's own philosophy and the importance of other lovers in her life.
This ground-breaking biography draws on never-before-published diaries and letters to tell the fascinating story of how Simone de Beauvoir became herself.
Copies of the month's selection will be provided for all participants.
Our discussion facilitator will be Dr. Kiki Berk, who previously facilitated our discussion of The Sparrow, with great feedback by our attendees. Dr. Kiki Berk is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at Southern New Hampshire University. She received her Ph.D. in Philosophy from the VU University Amsterdam in 2010. Her current research interests include value theory (especially happiness), analytic existentialism (especially the meaning of life), and the philosophy of death.
This program is funded by a Perspectives grant from New Hampshire Humanities.

Ancestry.com, WiFi Hotspots, State Park & Museum Passes... All these and more are paid for by proceeds from the Friends of the Jaffrey Library's ongoing Book Sales and Friends' membership dues.
Their book sales are a great way to support the library and add to your home library at a bargain price! Volunteers refresh the shelves on the main floor and lower level frequently, and there are books for all ages.
The Friends need to replenish the stock, but not be overwhelmed with books and disposal problems, so we have set up a monthly donation event.
On the second Saturday of the month, 10 am - Noon, the Friends will hold a two-hour book donation event in the Bean Room. People can bring up to 15 books in good condition to the Bean Room where volunteers will screen them for condition and subject matter that sell well in their book sales.
Please do not leave books for the Friends in our Book Drop and be understanding that library staff cannot accept donations on their behalf.

Strange, ghostly music will soon float through the air, otherworldly sounds that could only be described as purely science fiction, vibrating from the world’s oldest electronic instrument, the Theremin!
Since the turn of the 20th century, this bizarre device has been enchanting audiences around the world, from the concert hall to classic rock to the silver screen, as the only instrument on earth played without ever actually being touched. (Midsomer Murder fans will recognize the sounds of the theremin.)
New Hampshire’s own Thereminist C.G. Martiello will present a truly unique musical experience to introduce this instrument in an engaging, educational performance. Part history, part science, part concert, he explores the captivating story of its creation, how it works, and how the Theremin has come to help shape the face of modern sound, hidden in film scores, and a tour of sound effects! Join him for a presentation / concerto, followed by a workshop and Q&A session where you will be able to get a lesson and test this incredible device hands-on!
This free, special event is family-friendly and open to all ages. A perfect start to your winter school vacation week!
Registration is strongly encouraged to guarantee your seat. Caregiver attendance is required for children under age 10.

This month's selection is Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister by Gregory Maguire. Copies of the month's selection will be provided for all participants.
From Harper Collins: Gregory Maguire proves himself to be “one of contemporary fiction’s most assured myth-makers” (Kirkus Reviews) with Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, his ingenious and provocative retelling of the timeless Cinderella fairy tale. Perhaps best known for his dark and breathtaking Oz series The Wicked Years—including the novel Wicked, which inspired the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical—Maguire is a master at upending the ordinary to help us see the familiar in a brilliant new light.
Our discussion facilitator will be Ann McClellan. Ann McClellan is professor of English at Plymouth State University where she teaches 19th and 20th century British literature. She is the author of How British Women Writers Transformed the Campus Novel (2012), Sherlock's World: Fanfiction and the Reimagining of BBC's Sherlock (2018), and several articles on cultural topics ranging from servants on screen to social media, fan fiction, and Sherlock Holmes. She is currently writing a new monograph on Black Sherlock Holmes adaptations.
This program is funded by a Perspectives grant from New Hampshire Humanities.

“The Current Top Dirty Dozen Scams in New Hampshire”
Presented by Sunny Mulligan Shea, NH-Attorney General Advocate Office of Victim & Witness Assistance & Marc A. Boyd AARP-NH
The AARP-NH & NH Attorney General Office Presentation of “The Top Current Dirty Dozen Scams in New Hampshire” is coming to the Jaffrey Library courtesy of Jaffrey M & T Bank on March 14, 2023 from 10:00 to 11:00 am.
According to an analysis by Atlas VPN, Americans reported to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) a record $3.56 billion lost to online fraud in the first six months of 2022—a nearly 50 percent increase from the same period a year ago. This is just from online scams.
Every day, millions of Americans lose their hard-earned money to identity theft, investment fraud and other types of scams. And that is why The AARP-NH & NH Attorney General Office is presenting this topical and very relevant program for the residents of the Jaffrey area.
The program will be presented by Sunny Mulligan Shea, NH-Attorney General Advocate Office of Victim & Witness Assistance & AARP trained “Fraud Fighter” Marc Boyd. They will share with you the current top twelve scams happening in the state now. They will offer suggestions and how to deal with the scams, how to report them, and provide an opportunity for audience participation and questions.
Registration appreciated.

This month's selection is The Women Are Up to Something, by Benjamin J.B. Lipscomb, the story of four remarkable women who shaped the intellectual history of the 20th century: Elizabeth Anscombe, Philippa Foot, Mary Midgley, and Iris Murdoch.
On the cusp of the Second World War, four women went to Oxford to begin their studies: a fiercely brilliant Catholic convert; a daughter of privilege longing to escape her stifling upbringing; an ardent Communist and aspiring novelist with a list of would-be lovers as long as her arm; and a quiet, messy lover of newts and mice who would become a great public intellectual of our time. They became lifelong friends. At the time, only a handful of women had ever made lives in philosophy. But when Oxford's men were drafted in the war, everything changed.
Copies of the month's selection will be provided for all participants.
Our discussion facilitator will be Dr. Joshua Tepley, Associate Professor and Chair of the Philosophy Department at Saint Anselm College, where he has taught for the last decade. He received his B.A. in Philosophy from Bucknell University (2004) and his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Notre Dame (2013). His research interests include free will, personal identity, ontology (the study of being), and the intersection between philosophy and science fiction.
This program is funded by a Perspectives grant from New Hampshire Humanities.

Join the Friends of the Jaffrey Public Library for their annual business meeting. NH Humanities program, Songs of Old New Hampshire, will follow the meeting at 5 pm.
Sponsored and presented by the Friends of the Jaffrey Library, to follow the annual business meeting, thanks to a grant from New Hampshire Humanities.
Drawing heavily on the repertoire of traditional singer Lena Bourne Fish (1873-1945) of Jaffrey and Temple, New Hampshire, Jeff Warner offers the songs and stories that, in the words of Carl Sandburg, tell us "where we came from and what brought us along." These ballads, love songs and comic pieces, reveal the experiences and emotions of daily life in the days before movies, sound recordings and, for some, books. Songs from the lumber camps, the decks of sailing ships, the textile mills, and the war between the sexes offer views of pre-industrial New England and a chance to hear living artifacts from the 18th and 19th centuries.
Jeff Warner connects 21st century audiences with the music and everyday lives of 19th century people. He presents musical traditions from the lumber camps of the Adirondack Mountains and the whaling ports of New England to the Outer Banks fishing villages of North Carolina. Warner accompanies his songs on concertina, banjo, guitar, and several pocket instruments, such as bones and spoons. He is a Folklorist and Community Scholar for the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts and a former State Arts Council Fellow. He has toured nationally for the Smithsonian Institution and has recorded for Flying Fish, Rounder Records and other labels. Jeff is a founder of the Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival.

This month's selection is Beneficence by Meredith Hall.
This profound, lyrical book leads us through what happens to a close family's connections with each other and themselves when tragedy befalls them, the different ways their grief-stricken spirits try to relieve their suffering, and how in time they return to their lives and each other. Which do you think is true: that God "doesn't allow suffering. He provides it. It is a vital part of the great gift” or that we don’t necessarily find "one thing better coming from suffering than from happiness"? Beautifully rooted in the unrelenting but affirming seasonal rhythms of a farm in Maine, Beneficence immerses us in achingly knowable characters that bring us insight into who we ourselves are, as we experience with them the other natural movements of life: love and loss, guilt and forgiveness, loneliness and renewal.
Copies of the month's selection will be provided for all participants.
Our discussion facilitator will be Alice Fogel, New Hampshire poet laureate from 2014-2019. Her poetry collections include A Doubtful House, Interval: Poems Based on Bach’s “Goldberg Variations,” which won the Schaffner Award for Music in Literature and the 2016 NH Literary Award, and Be That Empty, a national bestseller. Strange Terrain is her guide to appreciating poetry without necessarily “getting” it. Nominated twelve times for the Pushcart, she has been awarded a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, among other awards, and her poems appear regularly in journals and anthologies. In addition to leading writing workshops, she works one-on-one with students with learning differences at Landmark College in Putney, VT, and hikes mountains whenever possible.
