NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest, available to us through New Hampshire Humanities. This fall, we will be joining other libraries across New Hampshire in reading the NEA Big Read selection, The Bear by Andrew Krivak, a gorgeous fable of Earth’s last two human inhabitants and a girl's journey home.
In an Eden-like future, a girl and her father live close to the land in the shadow of a lone mountain. They own a few remnants of civilization: some books, a pane of glass, a set of flint and steel, a comb. The father teaches his daughter how to fish and hunt and the secrets of the seasons and the stars. He is preparing her for an adulthood in harmony with nature, for they are the last of humankind. But when the girl finds herself alone in an unknown landscape, it is a bear that will lead her back home through a vast wilderness that offers the greatest lessons of all, if she can learn to listen. A cautionary tale of human fragility, of love and loss, The Bear is a stunning tribute to the beauty of nature’s dominion.
We will have an in-person/hybrid discussion facilitated by one of our favorite humanities scholars, Dr. Carrie Brown.
Dr. Carrie Brown, who will also be our Humanities Scholar-in-Residence for 2023-24, holds a Ph.D. in American Literature and Folklore from the University of Virginia. Working for more than thirty years as freelance history curator, she has developed exhibitions for museums, visitors' centers, and historic sites on a wide range of topics, including industrial history, transportation, and the Civil War. As a curator and speaker, Carrie delights in finding and telling stories about the connections between big historic events and our everyday lives. As a book group facilitator, Carrie guides readers through stories told by others--whether in fiction or nonfiction--exploring how the depth and breadth of human experience can be communicated through the written word.

An annular solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth while it is at its farthest point from Earth. Because the Moon is farther away from Earth, it appears smaller than the Sun and does not completely cover the star. This creates a “ring of fire” effect in the sky.
On Oct. 14, 2023, the annular eclipse will begin in the United States, traveling from the coast of Oregon to the Texas Gulf Coast. Weather permitting, the annular eclipse will be visible in Oregon, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, and Texas, as well as some parts of California, Idaho, Colorado, and Arizona. Jaffrey, NH will experience a PARTIAL ECLIPSE, beginning at 12:15 pm, peaking at 1:23 pm, and ending at 2:31 pm.
During an annular eclipse, it is never safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection designed for solar viewing. Pick up your free certified solar viewing glasses at the library, along with information about this solar event. We will have 100 packets/glasses available.
This is great practice for the total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024!

Ancestry.com, WiFi Hotspots, State Park & Museum Passes... All these and more are paid for by proceeds from the Friends of the Jaffrey Library's ongoing Book Sales and Friends' membership dues.
Their book sales are a great way to support the library and add to your home library at a bargain price! Volunteers refresh the shelves on the main floor and lower level frequently, and there are books for all ages.
The Friends need to replenish the stock, but not be overwhelmed with books and disposal problems, so we have set up a monthly donation event.
On the second Saturday of the month, 10 am - Noon, the Friends will hold a two-hour book donation event in the Bean Room. People can bring up to 25 books in good condition to the Bean Room where volunteers will screen them for condition and subject matter that sell well in their book sales.
Please do not leave books for the Friends in our Book Drop and be understanding that library staff cannot accept donations on their behalf.

Join us for this brand new NH Humanities program with Mary Kronenwetter, in-person, at the library.
In the late 1800s, the banking, railroad, and real estate mogul Austin Corbin returned to his hometown in Newport, New Hampshire. He built a grand estate and bought out his neighbors’ farms to create an 22,000 acre wildlife game preserve stocked with boar, bison, bighorn sheep, antelope, elk, Chinese pheasant, and other imported animals. The grounds eventually became a prestigious private hunting park and hosted illustrious guests including Theodore Roosevelt, the Prince of Wales, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Joe Dimaggio, Rudyard Kipling, and Augustus Saint Gaudens. This illustrated slideshow features archival images and a discussion of the complicated history and legacy of New Hampshire’s own American Gilded Age robber baron. The talk will also highlight the important legacy of the role the Corbin family and park naturalist Ernest Harold Baynes played in the saving of the American bison from extinction.
Corbin Park features in our next book discussion in November, Unlikely Animals, by Annie Hartnett, so it is a great tie-in!
Mary Kronenwetter holds a doctorate in educational research, policy, and administration and has held academic administration and teaching positions at colleges in the United States, China, and Japan. Upon returning to New England, she has had the opportunity to work at historical sites including Historic Deerfield, Enfield Shaker Museum, and The John Hay Estate at The Fells. Mary currently teaches for OSHER at Dartmouth and Adventures in Learning at Colby-Sawyer and has recently published the New Hampshire-based historical fiction, Pauper Auction.
This program is sponsored by a grant from New Hampshire Humanities, with additional sponsorship support from the Friends of the Jaffrey Library.
It is free and open to the public.

Join our monthly book discussion with our Humanities Scholar-in-Residence, Dr. Carrie Brown.
Each month, Dr. Brown will facilitate our discussion on a title related to the theme of TRANSITIONS and how we, as humans, transition through life and define ourselves along these journeys. She will engage us in a more critical reading of our texts, exploring language, structure, and character development.
This month's title is: Annie Hartnett, Unlikely Animals, 2022
A lost young woman returns to small-town New Hampshire under the strangest of circumstances in this one-of-a-kind novel of life, death, and whatever comes after. This novel is very specifically and identifiably set in New Hampshire. (We have a planned tie-in with the new HTG Corbin’s Animal Garden.) Named by The Washington Post Book Riot as one of the best books of the year.
Carrie Brown holds a Ph.D. in American Literature and Folklore from the University of Virginia.
This program is free and open to the public, but space is limited and registration is required. This meeting will be in-person with a Zoom option.
This project was made possible with support from New Hampshire Humanities, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Humanities. Learn more at www.nhhumanities.org.

This month's title is: Kent Haruf, Plainsong, 1999.
“Ambitious, but never seeming so, Kent Haruf reveals a whole community as he interweaves the stories of a pregnant high school girl, a lonely teacher, a pair of boys abandoned by their mother, and a couple of crusty bachelor farmers. From simple elements, Haruf achieves a novel of wisdom and grace--a narrative that builds in strength and feeling until, as in a choral chant, the voices in the book surround, transport, and lift the reader off the ground." -from the citation for the National Book Award. Plainsong was a National Book Award finalist.
Carrie Brown holds a Ph.D. in American Literature and Folklore from the University of Virginia.
This program is free and open to the public, but space is limited and registration is required. This meeting will be via Zoom.

This month's title is: Gail Honeyman, Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, 2017
“Honeyman’s endearing debut is part comic novel, part emotional thriller, and part love story.” – Kirkus reviews. “Office worker Eleanor adheres to a strict routine that has insulated her from the memories of her traumatic childhood but has not shielded her from loneliness. But after she meets Raymond, she attempts to rediscover her memories and, in the process, learns how operate and that other people can be a source of joy rather than destruction. Readers may find Eleanor odd at first but will feel compassion and root for her as she grapples with severe depression and her painful childhood. Though the novel deals with dark themes, quirky Eleanor's firm bond with Raymond and their adventures lighten the tone.” – School Library Journal
Carrie Brown holds a Ph.D. in American Literature and Folklore from the University of Virginia.

This month's title is: Toni Morrison, Beloved, 1987
Set in the period after the American Civil War, the novel tells the story of a dysfunctional family of formerly enslaved people whose Cincinnati home is haunted by a malevolent spirit. The novel won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction a year after its publication, and was a finalist for the 1987 National Book Award. A survey of writers and literary critics compiled by The New York Times ranked it as the best work of American fiction from 1981 to 2006. It continues to be among the frequently banned great works of literature.

This month's title is: Amor Towles, The Rules of Civility, 2012.
On the last night of 1937, twenty-five-year-old Katey Kontent is in a second-rate Greenwich Village jazz bar when Tinker Grey, a handsome banker, happens to sit down at the neighboring table. This chance encounter and its startling consequences propel Katey on a year-long journey into the upper echelons of New York society—where she will have little to rely upon other than a bracing wit and her own brand of cool nerve. Rules of Civility was a New York Times bestseller and was named by the Wall Street Journal as one of the best books of the year.
