Code Club is a fun, interactive after-school club that is open to all youth 8-18, as part of our new grant-funded Code Club program. Learn how to make video games, apps, websites and more!
Why code? Check out this video: https://youtu.be/nKIu9yen5nc
This is NOT school! Work at your own pace, work with your peers and librarians, and learn how to do the coolest things! Coding is truly a superpower!
We will have ten computers available, but you can bring your own laptop or chromebook, if you don't want to potentially have to share a computer. (Sorry, this program is not tablet friendly.) You are not required to attend every week, although Code Club will happen every week.

See Ms. Julie for details.

Thank you to Prenda, the Institute of Museum & Library Services, North Dakota State Library, and the Association of Small and Rural Libraries for funding this great opportunity!

Genre Tasting

This multi-age book club allows participants in Grades 2 -12 to choose their own title in a specified genre, read it, and share it with the group in a discussion facilitated by your librarians. Your librarians will also choose a book in that genre with an accompanying recipe that we'll all prepare (and taste) during our book tasting discussion. Both Ms. Andrea and Ms. Julie have severe food allergies but are enthusiastic cooks, making us the perfect pair to lead this food and book tasting venture. Due to the nature of this program, children under age 12 must have a caregiver in the library during the program. Please note that the registration form requires all participants to indicate any food allergies or sensitivities.

All About Honey Bees

An introduction to the fascinating inner life of a honey bee colony, a "super-organism" where tens of thousands of bees work around the clock, in near-perfect harmony, to build and maintain their nest, to battle diseases, parasites and would-be invaders large and small, and to gather flower nectar and pollen to make honey and "bee bread."

In All About Honey Bees, we'lll explore the special role of the Queen Bee, who can lay thousands of eggs in a single day, the many different "jobs" held by the all-female workforce of Worker Bees -- including nurse bees, undertakers, guard bees, attendants to the queen, foragers, scouts and more -- as well as the one crucial job of the colony's Drones (the male bees).

Find out how bees communicate within the hive through pheromones, vibrations, and the remarkable Honey Bee Dance Language that scout bees use to give directions to the best flowers and to new nest sites.  We'll also touch on some of the difficult challenges that honey bees face in today's world, as well as efforts to help them.

This presentation will consist of a slide show / lecture, followed by time for Q & A.  It is free and open to the public, and is the first of a four-part series that also includes:

  • All About Beekeeping - Saturday March 23rd, 1:30pm - 3:00pm.
  • All About Honey -  Tuesday, April 23rd, 6:30pm - 8:00pm.
  • All About Swarming - Tuesday May 14th, 6:30pm - 8:00pm.

Presented by JPL staff member Garrett Brinton, who has been keeping bees since 2005, including more than 10 years as a professional beekeeper, and 6 years teaching Practical Beekeeping at Humboldt State University.

Co-sponsored by the Jaffrey Conservation Commission.

All About Beekeeping

An introduction to the art and science of beekeeping, an occupation that most people know little about, but which plays a crucial role in pollinating many of the food crops we depend on.  This will include a brief history of the human relationship with honey bees, from beekeeping in ancient Egypt to today's modern beekeeping industry as well as the increasing prevalence of backyard beekeeping as a hobby.

We'll talk about the types of activities that beekeepers engage in over the course of a year, including inspecting colonies, propagating new colonies, swarm management, "supering," harvesting honey, monitoring and treating for diseases, fall/winter prep, and overwintering.  And we'll identify resources for folks interested in learning to keep bees, including books, journals, videos, beekeeping associations, classes, and mentoring.

Whether you've been thinking about becoming a backyard beekeeper, or you're just interested in learning about the fascinating world of beekeeping, All About Beekeeping is for you!

This presentation will consist of a slide show / lecture, followed by time for Q & A.  It is free and open to the public, and is the second part of a four-part series that also includes:

  • All About Honey Bees - Saturday February 23rd, 1:30pm - 3:00pm.

Before Peyton Place: In Search of the Real Grace Metalious

Grace DeRepentigny Metalious believed that in rejecting her own ethnic and religious heritage, she would come closer to inheriting the "American Dream." Her Quebecois ancestry and her formative years in Manchester reveal aspects of the author that the public rarely knew. Robert Perreault focuses on Metalious's most autobiographical and ethnically-oriented but little-known novel, No Adam in Eden.

Presented by Robert B. Perreault. Perreault has worked as a research assistant/oral history interviewer, librarian/archivist, freelance writer, historical tour guide, public speaker, photographer, and conversational French teacher to promote Manchester's history and New England's Franco-American culture since 1973. His works of nonfiction and fiction, written in French, in English or in both languages, include seven books and more than 160 articles, essays, and short stories published in the US, Canada and France. Perreault holds an MA in French with specialization in New England Franco-American studies from Rhode Island College and an MFA in Creative Writing/Fiction from Southern New Hampshire University. In June 2012, Manchester's Centre Franco-Américain named him "Franco-American of the Year."

This program is funded by a grant from New Hampshire Humanities and is free and open to the public.

All About Honey

We call our loved ones "honey" because honey has long been a symbol of sweetness, purity and love. But honey is more than just a syrupy treat and a term of endearment!  Did you know that honey was used to make the first known alcoholic beverages, was buried with Egyptian pharoahs to sustain them in the afterlife, or that hallucination-inducing "Mad Honey" has even been used as a weapon of war?  You may be aware that honey has been used in folk medicine for thousands of years, and you may have used it yourself to soothe a sore throat -- but did you know that modern medical research has confirmed and explained honey's antimicrobial properties and researchers have found impressive results for "medical honey" in caring for wounds and burns?  Did you know that honey adulteration and international honey smuggling is a multi-million dollar criminal enterprise that has landed people in prison in recent years?

In All About Honey, we'll look at why and how honey bees make this "liquid gold," and how the properties of honey can vary dramatically depending on which flower nectars are available to be used by the bees -- producing honey ranging from nearly colorless and very mild tasting, to black as molasses and surprisingly bitter; honeys that crystallize almost immediately, and those that can take years to crystallize.  We'll talk about how beekeepers try to encourage honey production from their hives during the main "nectar flow" season, and we'll explore how honey is harvested and processed.  We'll look at how beekeepers are able to harvest distinct "varietal" honeys (such as tupelo honey, orange blossom honey, sourwood honey, etc) and discuss how "raw honey" and "local honey" differs from the typical commercial honey found on store shelves.

And as if that's not sweet enough...we'll even taste a few honeys from the presenter's time as a beekeeper in California and Connecticut!

This presentation will consist of a slide show / lecture, followed by time for Q & A.  It is free and open to the public, and is the third part of a four-part series that also includes:

  • All About Honey Bees - Saturday February 23rd, 1:30pm - 3:00pm.
  • All About Beekeeping - Saturday March 23rd, 1:30pm - 3:00pm.

All About Swarming

A swarm of bees taking flight from a honey bee colony may be alarming to a casual observer who does not understand their purpose, but it can also be an entrancing sight for those lucky enough to experience it -- especially if the observer has a basic understanding of what's going on.

When a honey bee colony swarms, it is dividing in order to reproduce the colony, with some of the bees remaining behind to carry on the life of the "parent colony," and the bees that join the swarm leaving the hive en masse to find a new place to set up shop.

As the swarm pours out of the hive, a virtual hurricane of bees swirls through the air, typically for 5-10 minutes, before gathering nearby in a hanging cluster with their queen, where they will remain for a few hours or a few days as their scouts seek a good cavity to nest in.

When it's time to move to the new nest site, the bees again take to the air and head off to their new home, in a swirl of bees that is both chaotic in appearance and yet highly organized.

In All About Swarming, we'll explore why and how honey bee colonies swarm including:

  • The purpose of a honeybee swarm -- reproducing the "superorganism."
  • Swarm preparation -- queen cells / swarm cells.
  • Signs of imminent swarming, including "bearding." "piping," and "practice swarms."
  • A "Hurricane of Bees" -- the swarm takes flight!
  • The swarm cluster, a temporary stopping point for the swarm.
  • Scouting for a new nesting cavity and reaching "consensus."
  • Move-in day -- the swarm moves into their new home.
  • Getting down to business -- the swarm begins life in their new home.

This presentation will consist of a slide show / lecture, followed by time for Q & A.  It is free and open to the public, and is the final presentation in a four-part series that also includes:

  • All About Honey Bees - Saturday February 23rd, 1:30pm - 3:00pm.
  • All About Beekeeping - Saturday March 23rd, 1:30pm - 3:00pm.
  • All About Honey -  Tuesday, April 23rd, 6:30pm - 8:00pm.

Presented by JPL staff member Garrett Brinton, who has been keeping bees since 2005, including more than 10 years as a professional beekeeper, and 6 years teaching Practical Beekeeping at Humboldt State University.

Co-sponsored by the Jaffrey Conservation Commission.
