Humanities Book Discussion

Our newest online book discussion group for adults, Gather' round a Book, will feature a different Humanities discipline - history, literature, philosophy, ethics, archeology, anthropology, linguistics, geography, the law or legal theory, classics, and cultural or religious studies -  each month.  We will "gather 'round" a shared book in a Zoom discussion facilitated by a humanities expert.  We will alternate monthly between fiction and non-fiction.

November's selection is the powerful and provocative memoir, Heavy, by Kiese Layman. Heavy explores how addictive behaviors like eating, dieting, and gambling are entwined with American problems like racism and poverty. Winner of the Carnegie Medal for Nonfiction, LA Times Isherwood Prize for Autobiographical Prose, Barnes and Noble Discover Award, and Audible’s Audiobook of the Year, Heavy was also named one of the Best Books of 2018 by the The New York Times, Publishers Weekly, NPR, Broadly, Library Journal , The Washington Post , Southern Living , Entertainment Weekly, San Francisco Chronicle and The New York Times Critics.

Our facilitator, Katherine Gaudet is a scholar of the history of reading. She is Associate Director of the University Honors Program at the University of New Hampshire, where she is also a member of the Humanities faculty. She has published on topics including suicide, bankruptcy, and education in early America, and teaches courses on the narrative structures of topics like addiction, epidemics, and criminality. In 2015 she received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to develop a course called “What Is a Criminal?” and is currently editing an essay collection of the same title, forthcoming in 2022. (See more here: whatisacriminal.org.) She is also a freelance writer and editor. She lives in Saco, Maine with her husband, daughter, and son.

Copies of the month's selection will be provided for all participants.

Our November meeting is funded by a grant from New Hampshire Humanities and is free and open to the public. Registration is required.

(This grant funded program will meet monthly on the second Tuesday each month at 6:30 pm - October 2021 through April 2022.  There will be no December meeting.)

New Hampshire New Normal - Climate Change
State Climatologist, Dr. Mary Stampone provides an overview of climate change in New Hampshire looking at recent past and possible future changes in temperature and precipitation as well as some context for interpreting changing weather patterns in a changing climate. This program will take place on Zoom, and registration is required.

Dr. Mary Stampone is an Associate Professor of Geography at the University of New Hampshire where she teaches undergraduate courses on weather, climate, and natural hazards. As an applied climatologist, her research focuses on monitoring and modeling variability and change in regional-scale climate system processes with an emphasis on hydroclimatic hazards (i.e. drought, flooding, severe weather). Dr. Stampone is also the State Climatologist for New Hampshire, providing citizens, educators, and government agencies with weather and climate information in support of environmental management and adaptation activities. She is the point of contact for state weather and climate observing networks including the US Climate Reference Network (CRN), Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow (CoCoRaHS) network, and is the NWS cooperative observer for Durham, NH. Recently, she co-authored the "Northeast" chapter of the 4th National Climate Assessment, served on the NH Coastal Flood Risk Science and Technical Advisory Panel, and continues to serve as a member of the NH Drought Management Team.
