Hands with Heart
Do you knit or crochet or enjoy no-sew projects?  Are you looking for a purpose for your handiwork beyond your personal projects?
Join a special library group, Hands with Heart. LEAP Day with Lovable Leaper, Snoopy the Rabbit

Celebrate Leap Day with a Lively and Lovable Leaper: Snoopy the Rabbit!

In this one hour program, children and their caregivers will get up close and personal with a special Mini-Rex rabbit named Snoopy and learn all about a rabbit’s life as a leaper!!

They will observe and interact with Snoopy while learning about his behavior and adaptations, learn how to identify rabbit tracks and movement patterns in the wild and try leaping like a rabbit, and create their own rabbit track story.

Registration is required. This program is open to children and their caregivers, recommended for ages 4 and up.  Caregiver participation is required.

Our presenter, Claudia Dery is a retired elementary school teacher and naturalist who loves sharing her playfulness and passion for rabbits, stories and fun facts with audiences of all ages.

More about Snoopy:

  • Children will make a “Snoopy Circle” on the floor and will have the opportunity to pet Snoopy when he comes near them. Children will not hold the rabbit during the program.
  • Snoopy is “hypoallergenic”, which means petting his fur does not cause an allergic reaction.
  • Snoopy has been a class rabbit at the Wells Memorial School in Harrisville for the past 4 years. He has had lots of experience with children and is very comfortable, friendly and curious around them.

Being a new parent can feel overwhelming and isolating - come build a circle of support for your family as you connect with others in the same season of parenthood. Led by River Center educator, Kelli Tourgee, each session will provide the opportunity to learn ways to care for yourself and your baby, as well as exchange experiences and support each other's journey into parenthood.
This new weekly program is co-sponsored by the library, the River Center and a New Hampshire’s Preschool Development Grant with the Jaffrey-Rindge Cooperative School District.
All are welcome.

Friends of the Library Book Donation Drop-off

Ancestry.com, WiFi Hotspots, State Park & Museum Passes...  All these and more are paid for by proceeds from the Friends of the Jaffrey Library's ongoing Book Sales and Friends' membership dues.
Their book sales are a great way to support the library and add to your home library at a bargain price! Volunteers refresh the shelves on the main floor and lower level frequently, and there are books for all ages.
The Friends need to replenish the stock, but not be overwhelmed with books and disposal problems, so we have set up a monthly donation event.

On the second Saturday of the month, 10 am - Noon, the Friends will hold a two-hour book donation event in the Bean Room. People can bring up to 25 books in good condition to the Bean Room where volunteers will screen them for condition and subject matter that sell well in their book sales.

Please do not leave books for the Friends in our Book Drop and be understanding that library staff cannot accept donations on their behalf.
Click here to learn more about the Friends.

MUSH! with Noggin, the Sled Dog (and her human)

Have you ever wondered…
What does it feel like to ride the runners behind a team of dogs, steering a loaded sled through mountainous terrain, crossing the vast Alaskan tundra, hugging the shoreline of the
great Bering Sea? What does it take to care for a team of Alaskan huskies? Could my dog be a sled dog, too?

Musher, Karen Land, will answer these questions and more when she and Noggin, the Alaskan husky, visit us to celebrate the Grand Finale to Winter Learning at Jaffrey Public Library!

Land is a writer, public speaker, and three-time participant in the 1000-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race as well as many other sprint and endurance races in Alaska, Canada,
Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, and Maine. Since 2000, Land has traveled to nearly every state with her Iditarod dog sled, mushing gear, Arctic clothing, and beloved dogs, giving over a thousand
school and public library presentations.

Registration is required.

This program is made possible by a STEAM Learning grant from MilliporeSigma, helping us to grow the next generation of scientists.

Humanities Scholar-in-Residence Book Discussion

Join our monthly book discussion with our Humanities Scholar-in-Residence, Dr. Carrie Brown.

Each month, Dr. Brown will facilitate our discussion on a title related to the theme of TRANSITIONS and how we, as humans, transition through life and define ourselves along these journeys. She will engage us in a more critical reading of our texts, exploring language, structure, and character development.

This month's title is: Toni Morrison, Beloved, 1987
Set in the period after the American Civil War, the novel tells the story of a dysfunctional family of formerly enslaved people whose Cincinnati home is haunted by a malevolent spirit. The novel won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction a year after its publication, and was a finalist for the 1987 National Book Award. A survey of writers and literary critics compiled by The New York Times ranked it as the best work of American fiction from 1981 to 2006. It continues to be among the frequently banned great works of literature.

Carrie Brown holds a Ph.D. in American Literature and Folklore from the University of Virginia. Working for more than thirty years as freelance history curator, she has developed exhibitions for museums, visitors' centers, and historic sites on a wide range of topics, including industrial history, transportation, and the Civil War. As a curator and speaker, Carrie delights in finding and telling stories about the connections between big historic events and our everyday lives. As a book group facilitator, Carrie guides readers through stories told by others--whether in fiction or nonfiction--exploring how the depth and breadth of human experience can be communicated through the written word.

This program is free and open to the public, but space is limited and registration is required.  This meeting will be via Zoom.

This project was made possible with support from New Hampshire Humanities, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Humanities. Learn more at www.nhhumanities.org.

We invite newborns, infants, babies, and their caregivers, along with new parents-to-be, to socialize and learn together by strengthening their relationship with each other in a nurturing environment at the library.

Join a special library group, Hands with Heart. Cooks and Books Cookbook Club

Cooks & Books is a culinary adventure to introduce you to a new world of cooking, in the company of new friends. Our journey begins with a monthly theme, a special ingredient to try and a selection of library books and resources from which to choose your recipe!

Prepare your dish at home and join us for a shared culinary tasting potluck at the library. We will learn a little bit about this month’s ingredient and share our cooking experiences. Be sure to bring your dish, your recipe, and a serving utensil.

This month’s theme is: Quick Weeknight Meals!   Monadnock Oil and Vinegar is sponsoring this month’s ingredient: Mexican Oregano, free for you to try. Pick up your ingredient when you visit the Cooks & Books display in the library for your recipe inspiration. Your recipe MUST come from the library!
Registration is required. This is an “adults only” program.

Food allergy alert: The library is a TREE NUT and PEANUT FREE facility. For the safety of others, including staff, please do not use nuts in your recipes. However, this is a community potluck and we cannot guarantee the safety of food preparation for people suffering from food allergies (which is why Ms. Julie does not attend.)

We invite newborns, infants, babies, and their caregivers, along with new parents-to-be, to socialize and learn together by strengthening their relationship with each other in a nurturing environment at the library.

This month's title is: Amor Towles, The Rules of Civility, 2012.
On the last night of 1937, twenty-five-year-old Katey Kontent is in a second-rate Greenwich Village jazz bar when Tinker Grey, a handsome banker, happens to sit down at the neighboring table. This chance encounter and its startling consequences propel Katey on a year-long journey into the upper echelons of New York society—where she will have little to rely upon other than a bracing wit and her own brand of cool nerve. Rules of Civility was a New York Times bestseller and was named by the Wall Street Journal as one of the best books of the year.

This meeting will be in-person with a Zoom option.

This project was made possible with support from New Hampshire Humanities, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Humanities. Learn more at www.nhhumanities.org.

This month’s theme is: Something Sweet: Desserts!   Monadnock Oil and Vinegar is sponsoring this month’s ingredient: ___________________________, free for you to try.

Hands with Heart
Do you knit or crochet or enjoy no-sew projects?  Are you looking for a purpose for your handiwork beyond your personal projects?
Join a special library group, Hands with Heart. This group uses their talents to support Knitted Knockers (handmade breast prostheses for breast cancer survivors), Project Linus (afghans and no-sew fleece blankets), Hundred Nights Homeless Shelter (socks, mittens, and hats) and Mildred's Mittens (mittens and hats for local school children in Jaffrey).  In other words, they identify projects in need of Hands with Heart -- knitters, crocheters and crafters who have time to give for helping others with their talent and would like to get together at the library each week this fall and winter to work on these special projects.   Join us weekly on Thursday mornings.

This month's title is: Rachel Joyce, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, 2012.
Harold Fry is determined to walk six hundred miles from Kingsbridge to the hospice in Berwick-upon-Tweed because, he believes, as long as he walks, his old friend Queenie will live. Joyce's first novel, it was a long-list finalist (top 12) for the 2012 Man Booker Prize, and Joyce won the UK National Book Award for New Writer of the Year for the book. It was also the best-selling hardback book in the UK from a new novelist in 2012. It was a New York Times best seller and was named one of the best books of the year by The Washington Post. A film adaptation has recently been released in the UK.

This meeting will be in-person with a Zoom option.

This project was made possible with support from New Hampshire Humanities, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Humanities. Learn more at www.nhhumanities.org.

This meeting will be in-person with a Zoom option.

This project was made possible with support from New Hampshire Humanities, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Humanities. Learn more at www.nhhumanities.org.

This month’s theme is: Get Ready for Summer: Salads!   Monadnock Oil and Vinegar is sponsoring this month’s ingredient: ______________ free for you to try.
