See Ms. Julie for details.

Richard Hesse: The Founding Fathers

Richard Hesse presents “The Founding Fathers: What Were They Thinking?”

In 1787 delegates gathered in Philadelphia to address a wide variety of crises facing the young United States of America and produced a charter for a new government. In modern times, competing political and legal claims are frequently based on what those delegates intended. Mythology about the founders and their work at the 1787 Convention has obscured both fact and legitimate analysis of the events leading to the agreement called the Constitution. Richard Hesse explores the cast of characters called "founders," the problems they faced, and the solutions they fashioned.

Professor Emeritus at the UNH School of Law, Richard Hesse has published on a variety of legal and ethical topics. He served as a community lawyer in Philadelphia, heading a police community relations project before moving to Boston to head a national project focused on the rights of consumers. His academic concentration is on state and federal constitutional law and international human rights. Hesse has been an advocate for civil and human rights for more than 50 years and was twice awarded the Bill of Rights Award by the New Hampshire Civil Liberties Union.

This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library, with a grant from New Hampshire Humanities.  It is free and open to the public, and will take place in the library.

Genre Tasting

This multi-age book club allows participants in Grades 2 -12 to choose their own title in a specified genre, read it, and share it with the group in a discussion facilitated by your librarians. October's genre is SCIENCE FICTION. Your librarians will also choose a book in that genre with an accompanying recipe that we'll all prepare (and taste) during our book tasting discussion. Both Ms. Andrea and Ms. Julie have severe food allergies but are enthusiastic cooks, making us the perfect pair to lead this food and book tasting venture. Due to the nature of this program, children under age 12 must have a caregiver in the library during the program. Please note that the registration form requires all participants to indicate any food allergies or sensitivities.

Genre Tasting

This multi-age book club allows participants in Grades 2 -12 to choose their own title in a specified genre, read it, and share it with the group in a discussion facilitated by your librarians.

Electric Earth Concert

Electric Earth Tesla Quartet Strings Concert - Free concert at the library!

Join us for a family friendly concert by the Tesla Quartet.

The prize-winning Tesla Quartet will share the music of Beethoven & Ravel, plus 20th and 21st century gems by Lukas Foss & Canadian Samy Moussa. The Quartet will be joined in their performances by Artistic Directors Laura Gilbert (flute) and Jonathan Bagg (viola).

And here's some information about the Quartet...

Praised for their “superb capacity to find the inner heart of everything they play, regardless of era, style or technical demand” (The International Review of Music), the Tesla Quartet brings refinement and prowess to both new and established repertoire. Dubbed “technically superb” by The Strad, the Tesla Quartet recently took Second Prize as well as the Haydn Prize and Canadian Commission Prize at the 12th Banff International String Quartet Competition. The quartet has also garnered top prizes at numerous other international competitions, including the Gold Medal at the 2012 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, Third Prize and the Best Interpretation of the Commissioned Work at the 6th International Joseph Haydn Chamber Music Competition in Vienna, and Third Prize at the 2012 London International String Quartet Competition. The London Evening Standard called their rendition of the Debussy Quartet “a subtly coloured performance that balanced confidently between intimacy and extraversion.”

The quartet performs regularly across North America, with recent international appearances in Austria, Canada, China, Germany, Hungary, South Korea and the United Kingdom. Notable festival appearances include the 10th Joseph Haydn String Quartet Festival at the Esterházy Palace in Fert?d, Hungary, the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival, and the Swannanoa Chamber Music Festival. 2018/2019 season highlights include performances at Stanford University’s Bing Concert Hall as winners of the prestigious John Lad Prize, a return to London’s Wigmore Hall, and their debuts at the New York’s Lincoln Center and the Banff Centre International String Quartet Festival. Having served as the Marjorie Young Bell String Quartet-in-Residence at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick, Canada, from 2016-2017, the Tesla Quartet also holds a community residency in Hickory, North Carolina that includes performances and workshops at local colleges, universities, and in the public school system, as well as a dedicated chamber music series.
Community involvement and outreach are integral parts of the Tesla Quartet’s mission, and the group has brought inspiring music to children’s hospitals, soup kitchens, libraries, retirement communities, and schools. In addition to their current work in North Carolina, the ensemble spent three years in partnership with the Aspen Music Festival’s Musical Odysseys Reaching Everyone program (M.O.R.E), providing lessons, master classes, workshops, and performances for young string players. The Quartet has also provided community enrichment programs to the Steamboat Springs and Craig, CO communities as Quartet-in-Residence at the Strings Music Festival.
The Tesla Quartet was formed at The Juilliard School in 2008 and quickly established itself as one of the most promising young ensembles in New York, winning Second Prize at the J.C. Arriaga Chamber Music Competition only a few months after its inception. From 2009 to 2012 the quartet held a fellowship as the Graduate String Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Colorado-Boulder, where they studied with the world-renowned Takács Quartet. They have also held fellowships at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival and the Aspen Music Festival’s Center for Advanced Quartet Studies.

The Tesla Quartet is Ross Snyder (violin), Michelle Lie (violin), Edwin Kaplan (viola), and Serafim Smigelskiy (cello).

Genre Tasting

This multi-age book club allows participants in Grades 2 -12 to choose their own title in a specified genre, read it, and share it with the group in a discussion facilitated by your librarians.

Code Club is a fun, interactive after-school club that is open to all youth 8-18, as part of our new grant-funded Code Club program. Learn how to make video games, apps, websites and more!
Why code? Check out this video: https://youtu.be/nKIu9yen5nc
This is NOT school! Work at your own pace, work with your peers and librarians, and learn how to do the coolest things! Coding is truly a superpower!
We will have ten computers available, but you can bring your own laptop or chromebook, if you don't want to potentially have to share a computer. (Sorry, this program is not tablet friendly.) You are not required to attend every week, although Code Club will happen every week.

See Ms. Julie for details.

Thank you to Prenda, the Institute of Museum & Library Services, North Dakota State Library, and the Association of Small and Rural Libraries for funding this great opportunity!
