Plants that Changed the Course of History

The interconnection of plants and human existence is monumental. Food, shelter, fuel, medicines, clothing, oxygen, carbon dioxide certainly, but have you considered the impact of plants on our daily lives? Carol focuses her talk on a subset of the 50 plants that are detailed in Bill Laws’ book, Fifty Plants that Changed the Course of History. Registration required.

Osage Nation of Missouri

In 1804, the Osage Nation controlled a vast land base stretching from the Missouri River to the Arkansas River in the current states of Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kansas.  By 1837 the Osage had signed a series of misleading and fraudulent treaties.  During the 1860s and 70s the Osage lived on a strip of land in Southern Kansas where the Ingalls family squatted.  For some time in the early 1900s the Osage were among the richest people in the United States.

Sunday with the Speak St. Louis Dogs

Local foster based dog rescue and nonprofit Speak St. Louis are bringing some of their dogs here to the library to meet you.

Speak St. Louis rescues all sorts of dogs, but their specialty is double merles. Double merles are often born with shiny white coats as well as serious hearing and vision impairments. They may have trouble hearing or seeing but these dogs have no issues being happy loving pets. Speak St. Louis is here to teach us about these dogs, how to interact with the dogs, and how to prevent double merle breeding.

Come to the library and meet some really good dogs!

To learn more about Speak St. Louis and see some of their animals, visit their site www.speakstlouis.com or check out their instagram @speakstlouis

MANHATTAN SHORT Film Screenings at the Arnold Library

The Arnold Branch is proud to announce that we are a part of the 22nd Annual Manhattan Short Film Festival, a worldwide event taking place in over 400 venues across six continents between September 26th and October 6, 2019. MANHATTAN SHORT is the only event of its kind. The Final Ten are screened simultaneously across the world during a one-week period, with the Best Film and Best Actor awards determined by ballots cast by the audiences in each participating venue. By virtue of their selection by MANHATTAN SHORT, each short film is automatically Oscar-qualified.

The Final Ten MANHATTAN SHORT finalists hail from seven countries with films from France, Iran, Canada, Germany, and Finland alongside two films from USA and a record three from the United Kingdom. These Final ten films represent the best short films among 1250 submissions from 70 countries received by MANHATTAN SHORT for 2019, testimony to the enduring vibrancy and creativity of short films worldwide.

The MANHATTAN SHORT Final Ten are:
Nefta Football Club (France), Debris (USA), Driving Lessons (Iran),Tipped (Canada) Sylvia (United Kingdom), The Match (Finland), This Time Away (UK), Malou (Germany), A Family Affair (UK), At The End of the World (USA)

You Be the Judge!
Which of these ten short films is best? That's up to a worldwide audience to decide. Cinema-goers across the United States and around the globe will become instant film critics as they are handed a ballot upon entry that allows them to vote for the Best Film and Best Actor. MANHATTAN SHORT is the ultimate audience award that salutes the creative talents of both directors behind the camera and actors in front of it. Votes will be sent through to MANHATTAN SHORT HQ with the winner announced at ManhattanShort.com on Monday Oct 7, at 10AM EST.
