Meeting Goals Through Financial Planning

Studies have shown that delayed gratification is one of the most effective traits of successful people and that delaying gratification over time will improve self-control and help in achieving long-term goals faster. Delayed gratification can certainly apply to matters of personal finance. It’s easier to purchase something with a credit card but also more expensive than saving the money and paying for it outright.

To gain insight on how you can meet goals through financial planning, join Gail DeGrenier at a workshop offered by the Kingston Public Library. Gail is the Branch Manager for Rockland Trust’s Kingston branch.

This program will take place on Monday, February 10th at 6:30 pm at the Adams Center located at 33 Summer Street in Kingston.

“Meeting Goals Through Financial Planning” is part of a series of programs focusing on personal finance and financial literacy for adults and teens that the Kingston Public Library will be presenting alongside partners in the community. This program is brought to you with federal funds provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.

Author Talk - Christopher Klein

Just over a year after the Civil War, a band of Union and Confederate veterans fought side by side to undertake one of the most fantastical missions in military history: to seize the British province of Canada and to hold it hostage until the independence of Ireland was secured. By the time that these invasions—known collectively as the Fenian raids—began in 1866, Ireland had been Britain’s unwilling colony for seven hundred years.

In his book, When the Irish Invaded Canada: The Incredible True Story of the Civil War Veterans Who Fought for Ireland’s Freedom, Christopher Klein tells how thousands of Civil War veterans who had fled to the United States rather than perish in the wake of the Great Hunger still considered themselves Irishmen first and Americans second. With the tacit support of the U.S. government, the Fenian Brotherhood carried out a series of five attacks on Canada. This motley group established a state in exile, planned prison breaks, weathered infighting, stockpiled weapons, assassinated enemies, and managed to seize a piece of Canada—if only for three days.

Mr. Klein will speak about his book at the first program of the Spring Author Talks at the Kingston Council on Aging on Thursday, March 19 at 7 p.m.

Author Talk - Jennifer Sinsigalli

Why would anyone living in civilized places, like England or the Netherlands, even consider boarding the Mayflower and sailing to the New World? With the threat of storms, pirates, and cramped dark conditions, an Atlantic crossing would have been a nightmare. Even if land is reached, the New World is a wild place lacking shelter and filled with uncertainty. The odds of survival hovered at fifty percent.

In the historical novel Before the Mayflower, Jennifer Sinsigalli enters the late 16th and early 17th centuries, a time of transition from Queen Elizabeth to King James in England, and in the Netherlands, the Dutch Golden Age. The story of the thirty-three years leading up to the famous Mayflower voyage is told in this meticulously researched novel, combining known names like Brewster and Bradford, with the fictional family of printer Nicholas Okes.

Ms. Sinsigalli will speak about her book at the second program of the Spring Author Talks at the Kingston Council on Aging on Thursday, April 9 at 7 p.m.

Author Talk - Scott C. Smith

Lawless and political thugs are pushing poison on the street and corrupting City Hall. But a new force emerges when four quirky friends step up to save their city. Investigative reporters have been chasing down countless conspiracy theories and when they join forces with the quirky friends, the united team closes in on exploding the chaos. In the process they prove that the whole can be far stronger than the sum of its parts.

The LGBT Superheroes! Book I: A Genteel Exercise of Vigilante Justice is the first book in a trilogy by Scott C. Smith. Book II will be published this Winter and Book III will be published in the Spring. The LGBT Superheroes! reads like a graphic movie on the page – full of action, drama, romance, humor, endearing main characters, a cool supporting cast, and engaging story lines. Diversity, acceptance and prejudice weave threads throughout, and the reader is taken on an exhilarating ride.

He will speak at the Kingston Council on Aging, 30 Evergreen Street.

Author Talk - Elissa Altman

After surviving a traumatic childhood in the shadow of her flamboyant mother, Rita, a makeup-addicted former television singer, Elissa Altman has managed to build a very different life, settling in Connecticut with her wife of nearly twenty years. After much time, therapy, and wine, Elissa is at last in a healthy place, still orbiting around her mother but keeping far enough away to preserve the stable, independent world she has built for herself. Then the unthinkable happens: Rita suffers an incapacitating fall, leaving her completely dependent upon her daughter.

In Motherland: A Memoir of Love, Loathing, and Longing, Altman, a writer and editor, is forced to finally confront the profound differences between herself and her mother. From Rita’s yearning for beauty and glamour and the money that has mysteriously disappeared in the name of preserving youth, to the practical challenges of caregiving for someone who refuses to accept it, Ms. Altman must navigate the turbulent waters of their shared lives.

Ms. Altman will speak about her book at the third program of the Spring Author Talks at the Kingston Council on Aging on Thursday, April 30 at 7 p.m.

Author Talk - Hank Phillippi Ryan

Rachel North, a law student, will unhesitatingly tell you that she is smart, a hard worker, and that she does the right thing. She’s successfully married to a faithful and devoted husband, who also happens to be a lion of Boston’s defense bar, and her internship with the powerful District Attorney’s office is her ticket to a successful future. The problem is that she’s wrong.

The Murder List is a new standalone suspense novel from award winning author and reporter Hank Phillippi Ryan. In this cat and mouse game, in the tradition of Lisa Scottoline and B. A. Paris, the battle for justice becomes the battle for survival.

Hank Phillippi Ryan will speak about her book at the fourth program of the Spring Author Talks at the Kingston Council on Aging on Thursday, May 7 at 7 p.m.
