Council on Aging Oil Painting Class Exhibit

This October, the Kingston Public Library will exhibit work by students of A. Violet Berry in their Wednesday morning oil painting workshop.  The students featured in this exhibit are Diane Wilson, Ruth Littman, Richard Stevens, Sue Mrosk, Rita Bento, Armando Enriquez, Bill Mello, Gladys McGarry, Maralyn “Gig” Paris, Leanne Berry, Susan Traft and Bonnie Buhl.

All of the students are senior citizens, most from Kingston. Some have painted before, but for many this class has been their introduction to painting.

For the past 16 years, Mrs. Berry, for many years an art teacher in the Kingston School System, has been teaching oil painting through the Council on Aging. Former Council on Aging Director Muriel Boyce made the original suggestion to Mrs. Berry and her late husband Patrick, and worked with them to plan and promote the class to seniors, and it has proven very popular.

Classes are held in spring and fall at the Senior Center on Wednesday mornings.

This exhibit will be on view in our gallery through October.

Author Talk - Andrew Holman

Ice hockey, long considered Canadian, is actually a centuries long, worldwide phenomenon. Hockey: A Global History draws on twenty-five years of research to present a monumental history of the sport. There are stories of on-ice stars and organizational visionaries, venues and classic games, the evolution of rules and advances in equipment, and the ascendance of corporations and instances of bureaucratic trickery.

Stephen Hardy and Andrew Holman chart modern hockey's "birthing" in Montreal and follows its migration from Canada south to the United States and east to Europe. The story then shifts from the sport's emergence as a nationalist battlefront to the movement of talent across international borders to the game of today, where men and women at all levels of play lace 'em up on the shinny ponds of Saskatchewan, the wide ice of the Olympics, and across the breadth of Asia.

Andrew C. Holman is a professor of history and the director of Canadian studies at Bridgewater State University. His publications include Canada's Game: Hockey and Identity and The Same but Different: Hockey in Quebec. He will speak at the Kingston Council on Aging, 30 Evergreen Street in the Kingston Author Talks, a collaboration between the Kingston Public Library, Kingston Council on Aging, and Kingston Public Library Foundation.

Author Talk - Josh Cutler

During the War of 1812 the nation was bitterly divided. When a fiery young Federalist editor named Alexander Hanson spoke out in defense of a newspaper that dared to express unpopular views, a violent standoff crippled the city of Baltimore and Hanson was beaten within an inch of his life. Mobtown Massacre: Alexander Hanson and the Baltimore Newspaper War of 1812 examines this little known episode in American History.

This little known episode is complete with a midnight jailbreak, bloodthirsty mobs and unspeakable acts of torture. Josh Cutler’s history of the Mobtown Massacre offers a lesson in liberty as well as how this event helped shape the course of war, the Federalist Party and the nation’s very notion of the freedom of the press.

Josh S. Cutler is an attorney and state legislator, representing the Sixth Plymouth District of Massachusetts, which includes the town of Hanson. Like Alexander Hanson he is also a former newspaper editor. He will speak at the Kingston Council on Aging, 30 Evergreen Street in the Kingston Author Talks, a collaboration between the Kingston Public Library, Kingston Council on Aging, and Kingston Public Library Foundation.

Author Talk - Craig Symonds

World War II at Sea is a complete narrative of the naval war and all its belligerents, on all of the world’s oceans and seas, between 1939 and 1945. Opening with the 1930 London Conference, Craig Symonds shows how any limitations on naval warfare would become irrelevant before the decade was up, as Europe erupted into conflict once more and its navies were brought to bear against each other. World War II at Sea offers a global perspective, focusing on the major engagements and personalities and revealing both their scale and their interconnection.

Many have argued that World War II was dominated by naval operations; few have shown how and why this was the case. Symonds combines precision with story-telling verve, expertly illuminating not only the mechanics of large-scale warfare on (and below) the sea but offering wisdom into the nature of the war itself.

Dr. Craig L. Symonds is one of today's finest naval historians. The Ernest J. King Distinguished Professor of Maritime History at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, and Professor of History Emeritus at the United States Naval Academy, he is the author or editor of more than twenty books. He will speak at the Kingston Council on Aging, 30 Evergreen Street, in the Kingston Author Talks, a collaboration between the Kingston Public Library, Kingston Council on Aging, and Kingston Public Library Foundation.
