Summer Reading Program

Children entering grades K-6 in the fall are invited to sign-up for the Kingston Public Library's Summer Reading Program. Sign-up in the Children's Room any day between June 12 and August 9 and choose a book to keep from our Summer Reading Book Shelf. In addition, for every five books you read this summer, come back in and choose another book to keep. We'll give you a reading log to keep track!  You can celebrate with us at the end of the program at our annual End-of-Summer Reading Cupcake Party. This program is sponsored by the Kingston Public Library, the Friends of the Kingston Public Library, the Kingston Town Employees Union, the Massachusetts Library System, the MBLC and the Boston Bruins.

Native Pollinators

Our native pollinators are a critical piece of the world around us. There are thousands of pollinators that exist here and nowhere else and, beyond providing pollination services for our food, they help to sustain the diversity of life in our ecosystems. Prior to the introduction of the honey bee from Europe, all of our plants were pollinated by native pollinators. Due to a variety of factors, some of them, like the Rusty Patched Bumble Bee, are in peril. Learn about possible solutions for lending them a helping hand.

This program will take place at the Kingston Council on Aging on August 15 at 6:30 PM and will be led by Blake Dinius. Mr. Dinius is the Plymouth County Entomologist-Educator and has a B.S. in Biology from the University of Massachusetts, Boston and has several years of professional experience in insect research.

Pet Show

Annual Pet Show to benefit the Kingston Animal Shelter

Children and adults alike can bring their pet in to strut their stuff.  All proceeds from this event will go toward helping animals in need at the Kingston Animal Shelter.

This is a fun occassion to show off why your pet is such an important part of your family. What is their talent or trick?  What do you love most about them? Be prepared to answer a few simple questions the judges may have for you. Costumes are always fun, too!

We just have a few rules:

  • Pets must be leashed or in a cage/carrier.
  • Pets must be well-behaved and up-to-date on vaccinations.
  • Children under 9 showing a pet must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Permission slips must be signed by owners and/or parents of owners under 18.
  • Only dogs under 20 lbs. may be shown due to space limitations.

You may pick up a submission form starting July 2nd at the Library.

Author Talk - Paul Tremblay

The Cabin at the End of the World adds an inventive twist to the home invasion horror story in a heart-palpitating novel of psychological suspense. It’s a tense, gripping tale of paranoia, sacrifice, apocalypse, and survival that escalates to a shattering conclusion, one in which the fate of a loving family and quite possibly all of humanity are entwined.

Paul Tremblay’s novels have won multiple awards, and his essays and short fiction have appeared in the Los Angeles Times, Entertainment Weekly online, and numerous year's-best anthologies. He will speak at the Kingston Council on Aging.

Author Talk - George Michelsen Foy

On October 1, 2015, the SS El Faro disappeared in Hurricane Joaquin. The ship, its hundreds of shipping containers, and its entire crew plummeted to the bottom of the ocean, three miles down. The sinking was the greatest seagoing US merchant marine shipping disaster since World War II. The massive ship had a seasoned crew, state-of-the-art navigation equipment, and advance warning of the storm. It still seems incomprehensible that such a ship could sink so suddenly. Kingston residents are all too familiar with this heart-breaking tragedy and its connection to our small town.

Award-winning author George Michelson Foy writes fiction and non-fiction. He lives in New England and Brooklyn and teaches writing at NYU.  He will speak about his book Run the Storm: A Savage Hurricane, a Brave Crew, and the Wreck of the SS El Faro at the Kingston Council on Aging.

Author Talk - Eileen McNamara

While Joe Kennedy was grooming his sons for the White House and the Senate, his Stanford-educated daughter Eunice was tapping her father’s fortune and her brothers’ political power to engineer one of the great civil rights movements of our time on behalf of millions of children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Eunice finally brings Eunice Kennedy Shriver out from her brothers’ shadow to show an officious, cigar-smoking, indefatigable woman of unladylike determination and deep compassion born of rage.

Eileen McNamara is the author of Eunice, the Kennedy who Changed the World. Her distinguished career as a journalist led to her current position as director of the Journalism Program at Brandeis University.  She will speak at the Kingston Council on Aging.

Author Talk - David Mehegan

Alfred Mehegan was a graduate of the Massachusetts Nautical School and Northeastern University Law School and he served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.  He forged a career and family life in spite of the disadvantages of strife, childhood neglect, and a lifelong struggle with depression and alcohol.  This deeply reflective story is told against the background of Boston in the early and mid-20th century.  The story explores high hopes and bad luck and ponders why one person can escape the barbed hooks of family pathology, while another cannot.

Hingham resident David Mehegan, former book editor and literary reporter of the Globe, is also the co-editor, with Julianne Bone Mehegan, of Record of a Soldier in the Late War: The Confederate Memoir of John Wesley Bone.  He is also chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Hingham Public Library, and holds a PhD in textual editing from Boston University.  He will speak about his book Bright Deep Water: A Boston Life at the Kingston Council on Aging.

Author Talk - Eric Jay Dolin

Black Flags, Blue Waters: The Epic History of America’s Most Notorious Pirates reveals the dramatic and surprising history of American piracy’s “Golden Age”?spanning the late 1600s through the early 1700s?when lawless pirates plied the coastal waters of North America and beyond. The star pirates of this period are depicted, among them towering Blackbeard, ill-fated Captain Kidd, and sadistic Edward Low, who delighted in torturing his prey. Also brilliantly detailed are the pirates’ manifold enemies, including colonial governor John Winthrop, evangelist Cotton Mather, and young Benjamin Franklin.

Eric Jay Dolin’s histories have been selected as “best nonfiction book of the year” by numerous publications, including Kirkus Reviews.  Dolin lives in Marblehead, Massachusetts, with his family.  He will speak at the Kingston Council on Aging.

Kingston Public Library Book Group

Join us for interesting discussions of classic and contemporary literature, with a special focus on fiction. We welcome newcomers!

We meet on the second Thursday of each month at the Kingston Council on Aging. We begin each meeting with a light (and always delicious) supper. You won't go hungry.

We'll announce the title here as soon as it has been chosen. If you would like the Library to help you locate a copy, please call 781-585-0517 x121. We'll also be choosing books for the rest of the season. Come and join the discussion!

Questions?  Contact Anna Kelley, group facilitator, at 781-585-0589 or KPLreader@hotmail.com.
