Public Information Session about Library Building Project

Kingston recently received a rare $6.9 million provisional grant to build a new library. To move ahead with the project, residents must first vote at Town Meeting on November 14th to advance the project to a special town-wide ballot vote, then vote to approve local funding at the polls.

All residents are invited to hear a brief presentation about the project, followed by a moderated question and answer period, at an open forum on October 11th. Immediately following each of the two sessions, we will conduct tours of the existing library for anyone who is interested. The afternoon session begins at 2:30, and the evening session at 6:30.

Author Talk with Noah Wilson-Rich -- The Bee: A Natural History

Bees pollinate the food crops that we rely on to survive. Yet bees are dying at an alarming rate, threatening food supplies and ecosystems around the world.  In this richly illustrated natural history of the bee, Noah Wilson-Rich and his team of bee experts provide a window into the vitally important role bees play in the life of our planet.

Noah Wilson-Rich, Chief Scientific Officer of the Best Bees Company, is a behavioral ecologist and published author.  He has held various adjunct faculty appointments in biology at Tufts University, Northeastern University, and Simmons College and has given two talks at TEDxBoston.

The ongoing author series is offered by the Kingston Public Library in cooperation with the Kingston Council on Aging and the Kingston Public Library Foundation. The series is sponsored by WATD 95.9 FM Radio. Programs are held at the Kingston Council on Aging, 30 Evergreen Street and will last from 7:00 - 9:00 PM.

Westwinds Bookshop will provide copies of the books for sale and signing.

Light refreshments will be offered, and although the program is free, reservations are requested.

Author Talk with Joseph Bagley: A History of Boston in 50 Artifacts

Boston's Big Dig has contributed more to our understanding and appreciation of the city's archaeological history than any other recent event. Joe Bagley, city archaeologist of Boston, uncovers a fascinating hodgepodge of history--from ancient fishing grounds to Jazz Age red-light districts--that will surprise and delight even longtime residents. Each artifact is shown in full color and accompanied by description of the item’s significance to its site location and the larger history of the city

Joe Bagley studied archaeology at Boston University and UMass Boston and joined the City Archaeology Program in 2011, where he curates a growing repository of archaeological collections.

The ongoing author series is offered by the Kingston Public Library in cooperation with the Kingston Council on Aging and the Kingston Public Library Foundation. Author Talk with Ken Brack: Especially For You

Brack tells the wrenching and ultimately uplifting stories of families who find a new purpose after unspeakable loss. From personal experience, he speaks passionately to readers trying to make sense of calamity and to our shared capacity to transform pain into something good.

Ken Brack is a narrative nonfiction author and a longtime journalist in New England, moved by how people grow through catastrophic ordeals. His first book, Closer By The Mile, is the story of the country’s leading single-event athletic fundraiser, the Pan-Mass Challenge bike-a-thon for cancer research. He blogs for Psychology Today’s website.  In 2008, he and his wife Denise opened the Hope Floats Healing and Wellness Center in Kingston.

The ongoing author series is offered by the Kingston Public Library in cooperation with the Kingston Council on Aging and the Kingston Public Library Foundation.

Author Talk with David McCullough: The American Spirit

The American Spirit: Who We Are and What We Stand For is a timely collection of speeches by David McCullough that reminds us of fundamental American principles. McCullough has spoken before Congress, the White House, colleges and universities, historical societies, and other esteemed institutions over the course of his career. Now, at a time of self-reflection in America following a bitter election campaign that has divided the country, McCullough reminds us of core American values to which we all subscribe.

David McCullough has twice received the Pulitzer Prize, for Truman and John Adams, and twice received the National Book Award, for The Path Between the Seas and Mornings on Horseback.  He is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award.

Although the program is free, tickets are required. Registration opens on Monday September 25th at the Council on Aging, Kingston Public Library, and Westwinds Bookshop. There is no online registration for this program. Visit one of the three locations, or call or email for information and to get your ticket.

The ongoing author series is offered by the Kingston Public Library in cooperation with the Kingston Council on Aging and the Kingston Public Library Foundation. The series is sponsored by WATD 95.9 FM Radio.
