CANCELLED - Jumpstart Your College Essay Workshop

High school students are more than their grades, test scores, or activities. Experiences and interests shape what the future holds, too, which is what the college essay is all about. If you are preparing to head to college, the essay is the best way to let schools know who you really are and why you should be considered for acceptance.

The Kingston Public Library is offering a free presentation for seniors on Thursday, October 18 at 6:30pm at the Kingston Council on Aging, 30 Evergreen Street. This two-hour session, which will include the opportunity for Q&A, is designed to help seniors. The topics that will be covered are how to consider the application process and school selection in ways that help tailor essays and applications, understand what colleges want and don't in an essay. You will learn tricks for approaching the essay and creating a first draft that is really yours, and review how to edit and finish a good essay.

This program is being conducted by Hannah Roveto, a professional marketing writer. She has helped several high school students plan and work through essays and at several presentations conducted at the Kingston Public Library. Roveto is a local writer and marketing strategist whose c areer list includes industry-leading companies, non-profits, and public sector organizations. In addition to writing professionally, she volunteers her skills to help local organizations in which she is active. As a mom she has experienced the college application process first hand, and shares lessons learned with other parents.

This workshop is free. Registration is required and space is limited to 12 participants. To register please call the Kingston Public Library at 781-585-0517 or on our online calendar.

Tick-Borne Disease Prevention

Ticks carry the potential to transmit many harmful diseases.  In Plymouth County, the rate of Lyme disease infection is 13x higher than the national average and rapidly climbing.  Some even estimate that Lyme disease infection could be as high as 130x the reported national average.  The threat is severe and the chances of encountering a tick in Plymouth County are high so when it comes to protecting ourselves, we cannot afford to lose a single fight since one bite can change a life.  Applying the correct protection methods is critical.

Blake Dinius, Plymouth County Entomologist-Educator, will review the basic biology of ticks and dispel many commonly held myths.   Most importantly, he will cover proven protection measures.  With the right knowledge and tools, all tick-borne diseases are preventable.  Mr. Dinius has a B.S. in Biology from the University of Massachusetts Boston and has several years of professional experience in insect research.  This program is free and is sponsored in cooperation with the Recreation Department and the Health Department.

Author Talk - Eileen McNamara

While Joe Kennedy was grooming his sons for the White House and the Senate, his Stanford-educated daughter Eunice was tapping her father’s fortune and her brothers’ political power to engineer one of the great civil rights movements of our time on behalf of millions of children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Eunice finally brings Eunice Kennedy Shriver out from her brothers’ shadow to show an officious, cigar-smoking, indefatigable woman of unladylike determination and deep compassion born of rage.

Eileen McNamara is the author of Eunice, the Kennedy who Changed the World. Her distinguished career as a journalist led to her current position as director of the Journalism Program at Brandeis University.  She will speak at the Kingston Council on Aging.

Author Talk - David Mehegan

Alfred Mehegan was a graduate of the Massachusetts Nautical School and Northeastern University Law School and he served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.  He forged a career and family life in spite of the disadvantages of strife, childhood neglect, and a lifelong struggle with depression and alcohol.  This deeply reflective story is told against the background of Boston in the early and mid-20th century.  The story explores high hopes and bad luck and ponders why one person can escape the barbed hooks of family pathology, while another cannot.

Hingham resident David Mehegan, former book editor and literary reporter of the Globe, is also the co-editor, with Julianne Bone Mehegan, of Record of a Soldier in the Late War: The Confederate Memoir of John Wesley Bone.  He is also chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Hingham Public Library, and holds a PhD in textual editing from Boston University.  He will speak about his book Bright Deep Water: A Boston Life at the Kingston Council on Aging.

Author Talk - Nathaniel Philbrick

Nathaniel Philbrick’s latest book, In the Hurricane’s Eye: The Genius of George Washington and the Victory at Yorktown, is the thrilling story of the year that won the Revolutionary War. In the fall of 1780 George Washington realized that the only way to defeat the British was with the help of the French navy but Washington knew that coordinating his army’s movements with those of a fleet of warships based thousands of miles away was nearly impossible. Then, on September 5, 1781, the impossible happened in the Battle of the Chesapeake.

Mr. Philbrick's books have won numerous awards. This is a free event and will take place at the Kingston Intermediate School located at 65 Second Brook Street.

Author Talk - Eric Jay Dolin

Black Flags, Blue Waters: The Epic History of America’s Most Notorious Pirates reveals the dramatic and surprising history of American piracy’s “Golden Age”?spanning the late 1600s through the early 1700s?when lawless pirates plied the coastal waters of North America and beyond. The star pirates of this period are depicted, among them towering Blackbeard, ill-fated Captain Kidd, and sadistic Edward Low, who delighted in torturing his prey. Also brilliantly detailed are the pirates’ manifold enemies, including colonial governor John Winthrop, evangelist Cotton Mather, and young Benjamin Franklin.

Eric Jay Dolin’s histories have been selected as “best nonfiction book of the year” by numerous publications, including Kirkus Reviews.  Dolin lives in Marblehead, Massachusetts, with his family.  He will speak at the Kingston Council on Aging.
