Author Talk with Daniel Gagnon

Join Massachusetts author Daniel Gagnon for a discussion of his book  "A Salem Witch: The Trial, Execution, and Exoneration of Rebecca Nurse" at the Adams Center.

In the winter of 1692 something terrible and frightening began in Salem Village. It started with several villagers having strange fits, screaming, and unnaturally contorting themselves, and ended with almost two hundred people in jail, and at least twenty-five dead. Witchcraft accusations—claims that some inhabitants had forsaken God to become servants of the Devil—spread from Salem Village across Massachusetts, ensnaring innocent people from all strata of society under a burden of assumed guilt. One of the most significant accusations, and most unlikely, was against a seventy-one-year-old grandmother, Rebecca Nurse.

The accusations against Nurse, a well-respected member in the community, seemed unbelievable. Unflinchingly, this ailing elderly woman insisted on her innocence and refused to falsely confess. Supported by many in Salem, Nurse’s family and neighbors challenged her accusers in court and prepared a thorough defense for her, yet nothing could surmount the fear of witchcraft, and she was sentenced to death. Nurse, seen as a martyr for the truth, later became the first person accused of witchcraft to be memorialized in North America.

"In A Salem Witch: The Trial, Execution, and Exoneration of Rebecca Nurse", the first full account of Nurse’s life, Daniel A. Gagnon vividly recreates seventeenth-century Salem, and in the process challenges previous interpretations of Nurse’s life and the 1692 witch hunt in general. Through primary source research, he reveals how the Nurse family’s role in several disputes prior to the witch hunt was different than previously thought, as well as how Nurse’s case helps answer the important question of whether the accusations of witchcraft were caused by mental illness or malicious intent. Gagon's novel reveals a remarkable woman whose legacy has transformed how the witch hunt has been remembered and memorialized.

Books will be on sale following the event.

Gravestone Girls - Past the Cemetery Gate

Join us for a talk on interpreting and researching historic cemeteries and gravestones, presented by Brenda Sullivan of the Gravestone Girls at the Adams Center.

“Past the Cemetery Gate” is a 90 minute presentation where we learn to ‘read’ the cemetery for clues and information. Using both direct observation and deductive reasoning from objects such as the writing, art, geology and the cemetery landscape, much new insight can be revealed. That new insight can answer questions, create new inquiries and open doors for further detective work. Many use the cemetery as a cursory resource for learning, genealogy or entertainment. This program will get guests looking at these spaces, both old and new, as a valuable resource for their data collection activities.

Learn more about the Gravestone Girls here.

For more information contact Nick Cotoulas at ncotoulas@kingstonma.gov or 781-585-0517 x6277.

Author Talk with Catherine Newman

Join New York Times bestselling author Catherine Newman for a discussion of her book "Sandwich" at the Adams Center, released this past June.

For the past two decades, Rocky has looked forward to her family’s yearly escape to Cape Cod. Their humble beach-town rental has been the site of sweet memories, sunny days, great meals, and messes of all kinds: emotional, marital, and—thanks to the cottage’s ancient plumbing—septic too.

This year’s vacation, with Rocky sandwiched between her half-grown kids and fully aging parents, promises to be just as delightful as summers past—except, perhaps, for Rocky’s hormonal bouts of rage and melancholy. (Hello, menopause!) Her body is changing—her life is, too. And then a chain of events sends Rocky into the past, reliving both the tenderness and sorrow of a handful of long-ago summers.

It's one precious week: everything is in balance; everything is in flux. And when Rocky comes face to face with her family’s history and future, she is forced to accept that she can no longer hide her secrets from the people she loves.

Books will be on sale following the event.

This program is sponsored by the Kingston Public Library Foundation. To learn more about how they help the library click here https://kplf.org/

Author Talk with Marianne Leone

Author and actress Marianne Leone visits the Adams Center to promote her newly published book, "Five-dog epiphany: How a quintet of badass bichons retrieved our joy."

Leone writes about the joy that can be summoned after a great loss, "when you look into the eyes of another damaged creature and know that your happiness is a mirror and an echo and a prayer, and that the little soul reflecting all that energy is happy too, at last." This memoir is a moving and sometimes surprisingly funny exploration of grief and the mutual healing that can occur between rescue dogs and people who have experienced a soul-crushing loss. Leone and her husband, actor Chris Cooper, lost their only child suddenly in 2005. Jesse was seventeen, a straight-A student, and a brilliant poet, who was also quadriplegic and nonverbal except with the assistance of a computer.

When six-year-old Jesse miraculously blurted "dog" to Santa, Goody appeared on his bed on Christmas morning. Goody was followed by Lucky, Frenchy, Titi, and Sugar, all rescues adopted after Jesse’s passing. After Jesse’s death, Leone grew a tumor the size of her premature son at birth, her husband disappeared into dark acting roles (Breach, Married Life), and Leone fainted during the filming of a scene in The Sopranos where she is standing in front of her television son’s coffin.

This is the story of a bereaved couple and a pack of rescue dogs finding their way to a new life, everyone licking their wounds, both corporal and spiritual, and the rediscovery of joy.

Books will be on sale following the event.

Entering the holiday season, learn how you can protect yourself from viruses, spyware, fake toolbars, and spam. Arena, author of “How to Protect Yourself from your Computer,” will touch on these topics and more. He will help de-mystify, debunk myths, and get you feeling more confident using your computer.

For more information about Arena, please check out – https://thecomputerexorcist.com.
