FIRST TUESDAY FILMS

~~ The Big Sick (2017)

Based on the real-life courtship between Kumail Nanjiani and Emily Gordon, The Big Sick tells the story of a Pakistan-born aspiring comedian who connects with grad student Emily after one of his standup sets. However, what they thought would be just a one-night stand blossoms into the real thing, which complicates the life that is expected of Kumail by his traditional Muslim parents. When Emily is beset with a mystery illness, it forces Kumail to navigate the medical crisis with her parents.  Funny, heartfelt, and intelligent, The Big Sick uses its appealing leads and cross-cultural themes to prove the standard romcom formula still has some fresh angles left to explore.

2018 TAKE YOUR CHILD TO THE LIBRARY DAY: HORIZON WINGS: 'BIRD BRAINS'

~~ Come celebrate 2018 Take Your Child to the Library Day at this family event!

Horizon Wings presents 'Bird Brains':

Did you know that crows are capable of recognizing and remembering individual faces and can teach their children which individuals to avoid? Far from being 'hard-wired' as previously thought, recent research proves that birds actually possess sophisticated cognitive abilities. Indeed, responding to changing conditions by changing the way they act is often crucial to their survival. Join us as we compare and contrast the fascinating qualities of avian intelligence among four different species of birds: an American Crow, a Peregrine Falcon, an Owl, and a Blue and Gold Macaw.

Horizon Wings is a non-profit Wildlife Rehabilitation Center specializing in Birds of Prey.

BOOK DISCUSSION: THE SEIGE

~~ The Seige by Helen Dunmore

Discussion led by Amy Harris.

Multiple copies at the library.  All readers welcome.  Light refreshments served.

Called "elegantly, starkly beautiful" by The New York Times Book Review, The Siege is Helen Dunmore's masterpiece. Her canvas is monumental -- the Nazis' 1941 winter siege on Leningrad that killed six hundred thousand -- but her focus is heartrendingly intimate. One family, the Levins, fights to stay alive in their small apartment, held together by the unlikely courage and resourcefulness of twenty-two-year-old Anna.
