America at War -- Patriotic Posters of WWI with George Seeley

 WWI Multi-Media Presentation

Join Lincoln resident George Seeley in the library’s Tarbell room for a Keynote presentation of original WW1-era posters and songs and a discussion of how these represented a much different mood and spirit in the America of a century ago than one could ever imagine today.

Though actively involved in the fighting for just two years, America produced more war posters in that time than all the other combatants combined. These colorful large-scaled prints are by many of the best-known lithographers from that era such as James Montgomery Flagg , Howard Chandler Christy and Charles Livingston Bull.

Mr. Seeley is a retired history & government teacher. He taught for many years at both Bentley University and Belmont Hill School. Ms. Burckett-Picker is the director of the PhD program in International Relations at The Fletcher School, Tufts University.

reading for the fun of it!

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society / Mary Ann Shaffer & Annie Barrows

Juliet Ashton is a jaded writer worn out after years of trying to write about the upside of the Second World War for the general public. She is looking for something new to refresh her battered spirit which arrives in the form of a letter addressed to her by a farmer from Guernsey. Guernsey is a small island still recovering from its recent occupation by the Germans, an occupation that lead to the creation of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society which was used to secretly subvert German rule. The farmer, Dawes Adams, bought an old book that used to belong to Juliet, and writes looking for an address to a bookshop in London. Juliet begins a correspondence not only with Adams, but with other members from the Society. Through the letters, she enters the world of rural Guernsey and learns about the island's inhabitants, their literary tastes, their lives, and how they dealt with the German occupation. It makes Juliet realize how small acts of heroism made a big difference to the island community eventually leading her to the island of Guernsey herself, a trip that will change her life forever. Copies in various formats available  2 weeks prior to meeting.

Brooklyn by Colm Toibin 2009

In Colm Toibin's Brooklyn, a rural Irish village is the only home Eilis Lacey has ever known. As a bright young woman, Eilis could easily get a job as secretary--if only there was any work available anywhere in the economically devastated country. With the assistance of her parish priest, Eilis decides to move to America, leaving behind her family and beloved hometown. Once settled in Brooklyn, New York, she lands a job at a department store and meets Tony, a charming Italian man who is smitten with the newly arrived Irish immigrant. As the two get to know one another, and Eilis finds herself warming to this big-hearted fellow, tragedy unfolds back in Ireland, and she must decide whether to stay in Brooklyn or return to her family. The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien 1990

In these twenty-two recollections based on the author's platoon experience, the Vietnam War is replayed with horrifying reality. Every man who fights in Vietnam carries some military item, such as a grenade, an M-16, or C-rations. But they also carry revealing personal items: Lt. Cross has photographs of his girlfriend Martha with her letters; Kiowa always has his New Testament and a pair of moccasins, while Rat Kiley brings brandy and M & M's. Each man is different, each story is different, but together they add up to one hell of a war. Books &Authors

The Buried Giant by Ishiguro Kazuo 2015

Axl and Beatrice are an aged husband and wife who live in sixth-century England. Their country is no longer occupied by the Romans, and it is at the moment not engaged in war, but the peace is offset by the harsh living conditions England's peasants must endure. It is a dark place and time, populated with mythical warriors and monsters. Although Axl and Beatrice know that danger lies beyond their home, they decide to set out on a journey to their son's village. They haven't seen their son for a long time, and they seem to have almost forgotten him. As the husband and wife make their way through the countryside, they meet up with an assortment of characters who are on journeys of their own. Axl and Beatrice's quest prompts them to consider the past as well as the unknown future they face in the afterlife. Books & Authors

Wolf Hall by Hillary Mantel 2009

In Wolf Hall, Hilary Mantel tells the story of Thomas Cromwell, a bold opportunist who works his way through the ranks to become the trusted aid of King Henry VIII. As England erupts over Henry's plans to annul his longstanding marriage and wed Anne Boleyn, Cromwell keeps his sights set on the interest closest to his heart: the survival of England. Though his wheelings and dealings, Cromwell quells the public firestorm over the king's proposed divorce and marriage, all the while laying out a plan for a peaceful and successful kingdom. But working closely with the unpredictable Henry VIII is not an easy position--as Cromwell soon learns. Books & authors

Arthur and George by Julian Barnes. 2005

British novelist Julian Barnes brings late-Victorian England to life in this novel of one of its most famous figures. Arthur Conan Doyle is a former medical student who became famous, and infamous, for his short stories concerning a character named Sherlock Holmes. Meanwhile, George Edalji (also a real historical person) is a country lawyer struggling to make a living, but facing constant persecution due to his Indian heritage. When George is tried and convicted of the mutilation of animals, he sends the facts of the case to the famous writer. Arthur immediately sees that he cannot be guilty of the unspeakable acts. 11/22/63 by Stephen King 2011

11/22/63: A Novel is a suspenseful tale about time travel and American history from bestselling author Stephen King. On November 22, 1963, American history was altered forever when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. King creates a gripping tale imagining a world where JFK's murder could be avoided. Jake Epping is a 35-year old English teacher who supplements his income by teaching a GED course to adults. He's intrigued when he reads a paper including a first-hand account of a series of murders that took place 50 years ago. A short time later, Jake's friend, Al, reveals a shocking secret: he has a portal to 1958. Jake gets the idea to travel back in time and do what he can to thwart the assassination attempt and save the president's life. He soon finds himself plunged into the late 1950s, befriending a lonely Lee Harvey Oswald and falling in love with a school librarian. Books & Authors
