Ludington | Between the Lines Book Club: Afterlife by Julia Alvarez
8:00 PM
Join us for this exciting new book club! Each featured title is available digitally via Hoopla. For our first meeting, we'll discuss Julia Alvarez's new book Afterlife. Conversation will be facilitated by former literature professor and editor, Warren Hope.

The Zoom meeting link will be sent a week before the meeting along with discussion questions.

Antonia Vega, the immigrant writer at the center of Afterlife, has had the rug pulled out from under her. She has just retired from the college where she taught English when her beloved husband, Sam, suddenly dies. And then more jolts: her bighearted but unstable sister disappears, and Antonia returns home one evening to find a pregnant, undocumented teenager on her doorstep. Antonia has always sought direction in the literature she loves—lines from her favorite authors play in her head like a soundtrack—but now she finds that the world demands more of her than words.

Afterlife is a compact, nimble, and sharply droll novel. Set in this political moment of tribalism and distrust, it asks: What do we owe those in crisis in our families, including—maybe especially—members of our human family? How do we live in a broken world without losing faith in one another or ourselves? And how do we stay true to those glorious souls we have lost?

Join a museum educator for this 30-minute presentation followed by 15 minutes of Q&A. Ludington | Between the Lines Book Club: The Yellow House by Sarah M. Broom
8:00 PM
Join us for this exciting new book club! Each featured title is available digitally via Hoopla. For this meeting, we'll discuss The Yellow House by Sarah M. Broom. Conversation will be facilitated by Jenny Spinner, Associate Professor of English at Saint Joseph's University.

The Zoom meeting link will be sent a week before the meeting along with discussion questions.

In 1961, Sarah M. Broom's mother Ivory Mae bought a shotgun house in the then-promising neighborhood of New Orleans East and built her world inside of it. It was the height of the Space Race and the neighborhood was home to a major NASA plant--the postwar optimism seemed assured. Widowed, Ivory Mae remarried Sarah's father Simon Broom; their combined family would eventually number twelve children. But after Simon died, six months after Sarah's birth, the Yellow House would become Ivory Mae's thirteenth and most unruly child.

A book of great ambition, Sarah M. Broom's The Yellow House tells a hundred years of her family and their relationship to home in a neglected area of one of America's most mythologized cities. This is the story of a mother's struggle against a house's entropy, and that of a prodigal daughter who left home only to reckon with the pull that home exerts, even after the Yellow House was wiped off the map after Hurricane Katrina. The Yellow House expands the map of New Orleans to include the stories of its lesser-known natives, guided deftly by one of its native daughters, to demonstrate how enduring drives of clan, pride, and familial love resist and defy erasure. Located in the gap between the "Big Easy" of tourist guides and the New Orleans in which Broom was raised, The Yellow House is a brilliant memoir of place, class, race, the seeping rot of inequality, and the internalized shame that often follows. It is a transformative, deeply moving story from an unparalleled new voice of startling clarity, authority, and power.

BELMONT HILLS LIBRARY: 'Mill Town' Discussion with Author Kerri Arsenault
7:00 PM

Join author Kerri Arsenault and Lower Merion Library System Director David Belanger in a conversation about Arsenault's book "Mill Town".

Kerri Arsenault grew up in the rural working class town of Mexico, Maine. For over 100 years the community orbited around a paper mill that employs most townspeople, including three generations of Arsenault’s own family. Years after she moved away, Arsenault realized the price she paid for her seemingly secure childhood. The mill, while providing livelihoods for nearly everyone, also contributed to the destruction of the environment and the decline of the town’s economic, physical, and emotional health in a slow-moving catastrophe, earning the area the nickname “Cancer Valley"

Kirkus Reviews called the book "a crisp, eloquent hybrid of atmospheric memoir and searing exposé" in a starred review.

Kerri and her cousin David will discuss the book and the experience of growing up in a mill town.  David worked at the mill for two summers to help pay for college.
