Ludington | Between the Lines Book Club: The Yellow House by Sarah M. Broom
8:00 PM
Join us for this exciting new book club! Each featured title is available digitally via Hoopla. For this meeting, we'll discuss The Yellow House by Sarah M. Broom. Conversation will be facilitated by Jenny Spinner, Associate Professor of English at Saint Joseph's University.

The Zoom meeting link will be sent a week before the meeting along with discussion questions.

In 1961, Sarah M. Broom's mother Ivory Mae bought a shotgun house in the then-promising neighborhood of New Orleans East and built her world inside of it. It was the height of the Space Race and the neighborhood was home to a major NASA plant--the postwar optimism seemed assured. Widowed, Ivory Mae remarried Sarah's father Simon Broom; their combined family would eventually number twelve children. But after Simon died, six months after Sarah's birth, the Yellow House would become Ivory Mae's thirteenth and most unruly child.

A book of great ambition, Sarah M. Broom's The Yellow House tells a hundred years of her family and their relationship to home in a neglected area of one of America's most mythologized cities. This is the story of a mother's struggle against a house's entropy, and that of a prodigal daughter who left home only to reckon with the pull that home exerts, even after the Yellow House was wiped off the map after Hurricane Katrina. The Yellow House expands the map of New Orleans to include the stories of its lesser-known natives, guided deftly by one of its native daughters, to demonstrate how enduring drives of clan, pride, and familial love resist and defy erasure. Located in the gap between the "Big Easy" of tourist guides and the New Orleans in which Broom was raised, The Yellow House is a brilliant memoir of place, class, race, the seeping rot of inequality, and the internalized shame that often follows. It is a transformative, deeply moving story from an unparalleled new voice of startling clarity, authority, and power.

BALA CYNWYD: College on the Autism Spectrum
7:30 PM - 9:00 PM

Join us for a Zoom discussion with Dr. Laurie Leventhal-Belfer, author of the book College on the Autism Spectrum (see description below).  Registration required - please register below!

As the world slowly turns back to “normal,” the uncertainly of college life continues to loom. Meanwhile, many differently wired kids and their parents face the challenge of navigating school. For older kids, the question of whether or not to go to college, and for those who are college-bound, finding the right fit and setting up a support system to help ensure their success. Parents’ questions — from how to prepare their ASD child for college to managing ASD with secondary mental health issues — are all subjects that Dr. Laurie can readily address.

“College on the Autism Spectrum” is Dr. Laurie’s fourth book on helping children with ASD, and the first one that addresses the challenges of going to college.

Gladwyne - Snapology: Ninja Adventures
4:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Snapology's virtual STEAM programs are designed so that the only use of the screen or device is to simply instruct the students.  The core of our programs are always focused on building, creating, designing and problem solving.  While the student will have the screen on, their focus will be on the LEGO® bricks and other materials they have in front of them, just as if they were in person with us.  The screen simply puts the teacher safely in the room with the group of children.

To participate in these classes, the following supplies are needed at home:  Loose LEGO® bricks, any color, about enough to fill a 1-gallon size storage bag." Ages: 6-11

BELMONT HILLS LIBRARY: 'Mill Town' Discussion with Author Kerri Arsenault
7:00 PM

Join author Kerri Arsenault and Lower Merion Library System Director David Belanger in a conversation about Arsenault's book "Mill Town".

Kerri Arsenault grew up in the rural working class town of Mexico, Maine. For over 100 years the community orbited around a paper mill that employs most townspeople, including three generations of Arsenault’s own family. Years after she moved away, Arsenault realized the price she paid for her seemingly secure childhood. The mill, while providing livelihoods for nearly everyone, also contributed to the destruction of the environment and the decline of the town’s economic, physical, and emotional health in a slow-moving catastrophe, earning the area the nickname “Cancer Valley"

Kirkus Reviews called the book "a crisp, eloquent hybrid of atmospheric memoir and searing exposé" in a starred review.

Kerri and her cousin David will discuss the book and the experience of growing up in a mill town.  David worked at the mill for two summers to help pay for college.
