During the past year, many writers have focused on American citizenship and its discontents. At the core of concerns is whether democracy can be sustained unless citizens seek (and find) reliable data as the basis for informed judgments. Fostering engaged and active citizenry has never been without complica-tions. Many recent books harken to our nation’s noble founding principles, affirming Tom Paine, who wrote in COMMON SENSE: “We have it in our power to begin the world anew.” Several affirm Robert Bellah’s views of America’s “civil religion” from the “Spirit of ’76.” How effectively do citizens acquire reliable knowledge, especially considering the huge size of our nation (even in 1776, England would have comfortably fit inside of Pennsylvania; now France would fit in Oregon and Italy in California). Add to size, our huge number (330 million) and our vast diversity (more than 150 ethnic groups – that’s in Queens County alone, the most diverse place in the world), and wonder what are our prospects for unity, common ground, even for compromise
