Northwell presents: MINDFULNESS-BASED STRESS REDUCTION
11:00 AM

with Cardiologist Dr. Joseph Diamond
According to the American Psychological Association, 72 percent of U.S. adults surveyed responded that their stress level has increased or stayed the same over the past five years and 66 percent believe their stress has impacted on their physical health.  While it is not always possible to eliminate the sources of stress in our lives, it may be possible to teach ourselves better ways to deal with life’s stressors so that they do not have such a strong negative impact on our health. One technique that is used to help train the mind to better control its approach to stress is Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction.  Mindfulness is the practice of moment to moment awareness, by purposely focusing ones attention on the present moment without any pre-conceived expectation or judgment.

CELEBRATE LITERARY LUMINARIES: JANE AUSTEN
2:00 PM

In an exciting new monthly program, Dr. Lynch will celebrate literary luminaries in recognition of their birthdays or anniversaries of extraordinary publications.  Selections for her evocative reading aloud will be drawn from various genres, countries, and time periods.  Each author can inspire, stimulate, and move us with his/her unique talents.

The 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death (d. July 18, 1817) heralded a yearlong celebration and the issuing of a bank note in the U.K. with Austen’s airbrushed likeness.  She published anonymously, which was not uncommon for women writers at the time, and she achieved fame posthumously.  “Janeites” worldwide now discuss her novels, which deliciously chide British society and  survey women’s social status, financial dependence, and marriage pursuits.

DANCE SUPERSTARS: MISTY COPELAND & ROBERTO BOLLE with Marilyn Carminio
2:00 PM

MISTY COPELAND is the quintessential American success story. A shy & insecure child, Misty
made a late entry into dance, finding a purpose in the beauty & discipline of ballet. Through
hard work & determination, Misty became a household name dancing her way into the hearts of
the American people. Internationally recognized for her consummate artistry, Misty is the first
African American to become a principal dancer at American Ballet Theater. ROBERTO BOLLE,
a cultural icon in his native Italy, is internationally acknowledged as one of the greatest male
dancers of our time. Not since Nureyev & Baryshnikov has a dancer captured the popular
imagination of so many fans throughout the world. MISTY & ROBERTO shared the stage at La
Scala in 2017. This presentation will include video of their individual performances & their work
together.

NORTH SHORE AUDUBON presents: FLIGHT, THE GENIUS OF BIRDS
7:00 PM

Open to the general public (ages 12 through adult). FREE. Photographed in North America, England, Peru, Greenland, and Antarctica, FLIGHT probes mysteries and mechanisms of a bird's anatomy, instinct, navigation, and embryology to reveal stunning provisions essential for life in the skies. You'll marvel at a hummingbird's unique systems vital to its spectacular aerial acrobatics; the endurance and navigational abilities of an Arctic tern as it travels from pole to pole during the longest migration on the planet; the instinctive strategies that enable a flock of 300,000 European starlings to evade predators at break-neck speeds; the elaborate network of a million component parts that make a single feather an aerodynamic masterpiece, and much more. The poet William Blake wrote, to see an eagle in the air is to observe a portion of genius.  Film by Illustra Media.  www.northshoreaudubon.org
