MUSEUM HIGHLIGHTS with Ines Powell: THE ART OF ISAMU NOGUCHI
2:00 PM

Isamu Noguchi (1904–1988) was a sculptor, designer, landscape architect, and craftsman.  Isamo Noguchi was the illegitimate son of Yone Noguchi, a Japanese poet and Leonie Gilmour, an American writer and editor.  Noguchi lived in Japan until the age of 13 when he moved to Indiana.  As a pre-med university student at Columbia University, he began taking sculpture classes on New York’s Lower East Side. Thanks to a Guggenheim Fellowship, Noguchi was able to go to Paris in 1927 and to find work in Brancusi’s studio.  Under Brancusi’s influence, Noguchi turned to modernism, abstracting and reducing his forms and infusing his highly finished pieces with an emotional expressiveness.  For the rest of his long career, Noguchi was based in New York, but travelled extensively in Asia, Mexico and Europe.  He created numerous celebrated public works worldwide, all reflecting Noguchi’s belief in the social significance of sculpture. In 1985, Noguchi opened The Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum, in Long Island City, New York. The Museum, established and designed by the artist, marked the culmination of his commitment to public spaces

11:00 AM - 12:30 PM

Aviva Grossman, an ambitious congressional intern, makes the mistake of having an affair with her boss, a Congressman. When the affair comes to light, nothing changes for the Congressman but the course of Aviva’s life is changed forever. Slut-shamed, she becomes a late-night talk show punch line, anathema to politics and winds up relocating in order to get past this affair.  But in the digital age, the past is never truly past, and it’s only a matter of time until Aviva’s past becomes joined with her present.

You're invited to listen, enjoy, and participate if you wish - reading the book selection first is optional. Book selections are available at the Circulation Desk one month prior to each Book Discussion. Complimentary Coffee and Refreshments will be served.

MINDFULNESS MEDITATION with Carolyn Carpentiere
7:30 PM

KEEPING MANHASSET HEALTHY 2018 ~ Take an hour...Just for you.

Meditation helps us to slow down our busy minds and silently observe our thoughts. Our thoughts shape our days and our lives, so by sitting still and paying close attention we can become more aware of what comes up in the mind. As we become more aware, we can choose the direction of our thoughts. Studies have shown that awareness has a powerful effect on healing the mind and body. By focusing and leading the mind away from stressful thoughts toward peaceful thoughts we relieve stress and strengthen the immune system.
