MUSEUM HIGHLIGHTS with Ines Powell: A VIRTUAL VISIT TO THE GREEK GALLERIES AT THE MMA
2:00 PM

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has one of the most comprehensive collections of Ancient Greek art in North America.  The works range from the prehistoric period (ca. 4500 B.C.) to the end of the Hellenistic period (31B.C.).  Among the strengths of the Greek collection are the painted vases and grave reliefs. The collection of archaic Attic sculpture is second only to that in Athens. The objects range from tiny to life-size and are made of virtually all the materials used by ancient artists: marble, limestone, terracotta, bronze, gold, silver, glass and even rarer substances such as wood, ivory and iron. We will study some of the finest examples in the Museum from the collections of Cycladic, Attic, Archaic, Geometric, Classical and Hellenistic periods.

BOOK ENDS CAFE:THE NEST, by Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney
2:00 PM

Book Talk Leaders: Librarians Cheryl Kallberg and Anne May

You're invited to listen, enjoy, and participate if you wish - reading the book selection first is optional. Book selections are available at the Circulation Desk one month prior to each Book Talk. Coffee and cookies will be served.

A warm, funny and acutely perceptive debut novel about four adult siblings and the fate of the shared inheritance that has shaped their choices and their lives. Every family has its problems. But even among the most troubled, the Plumb family stands out as spectacularly dysfunctional. Years of simmering tensions finally reach a breaking point on an unseasonably cold afternoon in New York City as Melody, Beatrice, and Jack Plumb gather to confront their charismatic and reckless older brother, Leo, freshly released from rehab. Months earlier, an inebriated Leo got behind the wheel of a car with a nineteen-year-old waitress as his passenger. The ensuing accident has endangered the Plumbs' joint trust fund, The Nest, which they are months away from finally receiving. Meant by their deceased father to be a modest mid-life supplement, the Plumb siblings have watched The Nest’s value soar along with the stock market and have been counting on the money to solve a number of self-inflicted problems. In this tender, entertaining, and deftly written debut, Sweeney brings a remarkable cast of characters to life to illuminate what money does to relationships, what happens to our ambitions over the course of time, and the fraught yet unbreakable ties we share with those we love.

AN EVENING WITH AUTHOR KATE HENNESSY, DOROTHY DAY: The World Will Be Saved by Beauty
7:30 PM

The Friends of the Manhasset Public Library proudly host Kate Hennessy as she presents her book DOROTHY DAY: The World Will Be Saved by Beauty ~ An Intimate Portrait of My Grandmother.

Dorothy Day (1897 - 1980) was a prominent writer, activist, and co-founder of The Catholic Worker movement dedicated to serving the poorest of the poor. Her life has been revealed through her writings as well as the work of historians, theolgians, and academics. What has been missing until now is a more personal account from the point of view of someone who knew her well. Kate Hennessy has filled that void with this frank and relective, heartfelt and humorous portrayal. Dorothy Day -- the iconic, celebrated and controversial Catholic whom Pope Francis called a "great American" is currently being considered for canonization. "An initmate revealing and sometimes wrenching family memoir." The New York Times.

Seating for members of The Friends of the Library begins at 7 p.m.  General seating begins at 7:15 p.m.

Open to all ~ No Admission Fee ~ No Reservations   Light refreshments will be served. Questions? Please contact FriendsofManhassetLibrary@gmail.com
