MUSEUM HIGHLIGHTS with Ines Powell: A VIRTUAL VISIT TO THE GREEK GALLERIES AT THE MMA

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has one of the most comprehensive collections of Ancient Greek art in North America.  The works range from the prehistoric period (ca. 4500 B.C.) to the end of the Hellenistic period (31B.C.).  Among the strengths of the Greek collection are the painted vases and grave reliefs. The collection of archaic Attic sculpture is second only to that in Athens. The objects range from tiny to life-size and are made of virtually all the materials used by ancient artists: marble, limestone, terracotta, bronze, gold, silver, glass and even rarer substances such as wood, ivory and iron. We will study some of the finest examples in the Museum from the collections of Cycladic, Attic, Archaic, Geometric, Classical and Hellenistic periods.

You think homework is pressure?  Just wait until you learn how the weight of the earth's pressure pushes down on you with the force of two elephants!  Explore how Bernoulli's principle creates enough lift to make a jumbo jet fly or how air pressure can be used to launch a mini-rocket.  Watch in amazement as our vortex generator creates giant smoke rings.  Want even more pressure?  Take a ride on our amazing Mad Science Hovercraft!  Mad Science shows are fun and educational and this program will leave you flying high!

The Friends of the Manhasset Public Library proudly host Kate Hennessy as she presents her book DOROTHY DAY: The World Will Be Saved by Beauty ~ An Intimate Portrait of My Grandmother.

Dorothy Day (1897 - 1980) was a prominent writer, activist, and co-founder of The Catholic Worker movement dedicated to serving the poorest of the poor. Her life has been revealed through her writings as well as the work of historians, theolgians, and academics. What has been missing until now is a more personal account from the point of view of someone who knew her well. Kate Hennessy has filled that void with this frank and relective, heartfelt and humorous portrayal. Dorothy Day -- the iconic, celebrated and controversial Catholic whom Pope Francis called a "great American" is currently being considered for canonization. "An initmate revealing and sometimes wrenching family memoir." The New York Times.

STEM CELLS: THEIR BIOLOGY AND NEW APPLICATIONS FOR REGENERATIVE MEDICINE with Dr. Daniel Grande

LEARN THE LATEST IN STEM CELL THERAPY

Stem cells have multifunctional properties including immunomodulatory as well as regenerative capability.  This seminar will explore the types of stem cells currently discovered, their path to the clinic as well as long-term future applications for regenerative medicine.

Dr. Grande is an associate professor at the Feinstein Institute and associate professor at the Elmezzi Graduate School of Molecular Medicine and the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine. Dr. Grande graduated from Long Island University with a BS in Biology and completed his PhD in Anatomy and cell biology at New York University.  He completed his post-doc in biomechanics at the Hospital for Special Surgery.  His thesis work demonstrated the first use of cell-based therapy for repair of articular cartilage: Autologous chondrocyte implantation.  He began his scientific career at Hospital for Joint Diseases/ Orthopedic Institute studying regenerative medicine and tissue engineering technologies for repair of the musculoskeletal system.  In 1990, Dr. Grande established the orthopedic research laboratory at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research and continued investigating novel regenerative therapies including stem cells, growth factors, biomaterials and recently 3-D bioprinting.
