International Peace Day Mosaic Event
9:00 AM - 9:00 PM

The International Day of Peace (“Peace Day”) is observed around the world each year on September 21. Peace Day provides all of us with a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to peace above all differences and to contribute to building a Culture of Peace.

Stop in beginning on September 21 at 9:00 am and help us to unveil our mosaic puzzle poster dedicated to this event, by adding mosaic pieces. It will stay up all weekend OR until we have a finished piece. Guess what it might be!

Gradually it will reveal itself!

We all need more peace in the world!

All ages are welcome to participate.

SONGS & STORIES: FOREVER ELLA with Linda Ciofalo & Ted Firth on piano
2:00 PM

Ciofalo’s repertoire ranges from such diverse sources as bluesman John Lee Hooker to Rodgers and Hammerstein's Broadway. Her voice can be both hard-hitting and gutsy, or lend itself to pure romance . "...she is blessed with a voice as warm, bright and shimmering as a smog-free country morning."Jazz Times.

A Tisket A Tasket, The Lady Is A Tramp, How High The Moon, Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered and so many other songs were given the royal treatment by the incomparable artist Ella Fitzgerald. Ella defied the often held misconception that singers aren't as virtuosic as their instrumentalist counterparts. She was unique and had no equal. Please join us as we pay tribute to the First Lady of Song!

Lecturer: CBS Video Editor for 30 years, Jack Schnur

You'll enjoy some great laughs as you watch video clips from some of Carol's greatest television skits. "The entertainment world has enjoyed a five-decade love affair with comedienne/singer Carol Burnett. A peerless sketch performer and delightful, self-effacing personality who rightfully succeeded Lucille Ball as the carrot-topped Queen of Television Comedy."

This delightful retrospective of Carol Burnett's career includes clips from her first Broadway Musical Once Upon a Mattress and of her long-running show on CBS The Carol Burnett Show with sketches and out takes. Guests will include Lucille Ball, Steve Martin, Steve Lawrence, and the Jackson Five.  Enjoy the famous sketch Went with the Wind, the Gone with the Wind parody, and many more.

CELEBRATE LITERARY LUMINARIES: GEORGE ORWELL
2:00 PM

Dr. Vivian Valvano Lynch will celebrate literary luminaries in recognition of their birthdays or anniversaries of extraordinary publications.  Selections for Dr. Lynch's evocative reading aloud will be drawn from various genres, countries, and time periods.  Each author can inspire, stimulate, and move us with his/her unique talents.

George Orwell (b. 1903)   Orwell's dystopian fiction gave us the now iconic characterization of Big Brother and iconic concept of NewspeakSo influential was his work that a new and frightening adjective was added to the English language...Orwellian.  (Excerpts from Nineteen Eighty-Four, published 1949).
