Speaker – Joe Giunta

Mr. Guinta, a native New Yorker, has been an avid birder in the NY region for nearly 30 years.  He is the birding instructor for the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and has led bird walks for many organizations including Nature Conservancy, NYC Audubon, Brooklyn Bird Club and on occasion NSAS when we can get him to squeeze us into his busy schedule. Tonight he will highlight fall warblers in their fall feather colors as we try to better grasp identifying them among the fall foliage.

VISUAL ART LECTURE: BECOMING PICASSO (1881-1917) with Professor Thomas Germano
7:00 PM

This visual lecture by Professor Thomas Germano looks at the early years of the life of Pablo Picasso, who was born in Malaga, Spain and made his artistic notoriety in Paris. Picasso’s breakthrough year as an artist came in 1901 when he showed paintings in his debut exhibition with the influential dealer Ambroise Vollard. The ambitious nineteen-year-old launched his career in Paris with an exhibition that would set him on a course to become one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. The early, lesser known works show the young painter taking on and transforming the styles and subjects of major modern artists of the age, such as Van Gogh, Gauguin, Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec, Renoir and Cezanne. In the second half of 1901, Picasso radically changed the direction of his art, heralding the beginning of his now famous Blue period, producing a group of paintings of melancholic figures considered to be among his first masterpieces. Within just the first decade of the 20th century, Picasso not only created the Blue period, but soon introduced a Rose Period, Iberian Influenced paintings, African Influenced paintings, and eventually Cubism. Becoming Picasso looks at the early years of the artist's lesser known  works, examining the transformative innovation of style and form through 1917.

THE GOLDEN AGE OF TELEVISION with Brian Rose
2:00 PM

The Golden Age of Television: What Made the 1950s So Special for American Television?

American television was all set to launch in the late 1930s, but its progress was interrupted by the start of World War II. Finally, by the end of the 1940s, NBC and CBS began broadcasting to their east coast affiliates. They offered viewers a wide variety of programs: situation comedies, vaudeville-style revues, and most impressively, live original dramas. Within a few years, these anthology programs, like Kraft Theatre and Ford Theatre launched the careers of soon-to-be famous directors like Arthur Penn and John Frankenheimer, actors like Paul Newman and James Dean, and playwrights like Paddy Chayevsky and Rod Serling. But by the end of the 1950s, the era of live TV "theater" was over. So too was New York City as a center of TV production. This presentation will look at the forces that made this "golden age" such an intriguing chapter in TV history and why it was so short-lived (including brief examinations of blacklisting and the TV quiz show scandals).

Brian Rose is a Professor of Film and Television at Fordham University. He's written three books on television history. In addition, he's interviewed leading directors, actors, and writers for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, the British Academy of Film and Television, the Writers Guild, the Screen Actors Guild, and the Directors Guild of America. What Made the 1950s So Special for American TV?
