IN CELEBRATION OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH: PAUL ROBESON with Professor Michael D'Innocenzo
2:00 PM

Paul Robeson was an earlier version of Manhasset’s greatest athlete, Jim Brown. Like Brown, Robeson excelled at 4 sports. Like Brown, Robeson was a football all-American.  Robeson played professional football while earning a law degree at Columbia, and, then, he expanded theatrical skills that he began in high school.  He performed professionally in Showboat and Othello.  He achieved international acclaim with a singing repertoire that included, spirituals, as well as folk, political and classical music.  His father had been a slave; his mother of multi-racial background. It is not surprising that Paul Robeson became a powerful civil rights advocate.

A DAY AT THE OPERA: GREAT MOMENTS IN NEGLECTED OPERAS with Dr. James Kolb
2:00 PM

There are many fine 19th-Century operas that receive only a very few stagings today, but many contain at least one memorable musical moment, and that aria or duet is often heard in concert performed by many great singers. Operas such as Halevy’s La Juive, Cilea’s L’Arlesiana, Catalani’s La Wally, and gems from Meyerbeer, Massenet and others will be examined in both concert and rare, staged renditions.  Rescheduled from January 4, due to snow cancellation.

North Shore Audubon: BIRDS OF A RESTORED GRASSLAND PROJECT (former Whitney Estate, Manhasset)
7:00 PM

Stephane Perreault will present bird data from a grassland restoration project that has been underway for nearly a decade at the Greentree Foundation, a private 400-acre estate in Northern Nassau County. The stunning results are encouraging for all those involved in grassland restoration projects on Long Island. Stephane will also discuss a collaboration between grassland managers and birders to establish a bird dataset for a conceptual "grassland corridor" on Long Island. Stephane Perreault is a graduate of McGill University, where he conducted research on the American Redstart. Since moving to Long Island in the mid-90s he has pursued a diversified career in laboratory biology and has remained an avid birder. He is currently a staff ornithologist at the Seatuck Environmental Association and leads the organization's bird surveys at Greentree and other locations.

POWER & GRACE: RUBENS, VAN DYCK AND JORDAENS with Thomas Germano
2:00 PM

An exhibition of drawings by Rubens, Van Dyck and Jordaens will appear at the Morgan Library January 19 through April 29, 2018. Drawings played a crucial role in the artistic practice of the three giants of the Flemish Baroque, Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640), Anthony van Dyck (1599–1641), and Jacob Jordaens (1593–1678). The visual lecture will also present related paintings by these three masters of the Flemish Baroque in addition to masterworks that show the distinctive styles of each artist and their influence on one another. Rubens, Van Dyck, and Jordaens are well represented in the U.S., particularly in NYC collections which will be highlighted in this visual lecture.

Frederick Ashton’s La Fille mal Gardée (“The Girl Who Was Badly Guarded”) with Dr. James Kolb
2:00 PM

A comic ballet dating from 1789 has been reconstructed and preserved in several versions. In 1960 Sir Frederick Ashton created a new production for the Royal Ballet of England which remains a delightful rendition of the traditional comic story of a young boy getting the girl he loves despite the opposition of her mother who wishes the daughter to marry a dimwitted, but very rich young man. The work includes a clog dance, a Maypole dance, a violent storm, and an extraordinarily beautiful pas de deux.

For Women's History Month: THE ROLE OF THE AMERICAN FIRST LADY...
2:00 PM

FROM ELEANOR ROOSEVELT TO MELANIA TRUMP

To celebrate Women's History Month enjoy a series of three Visual History Lectures with Marilyn Carminio

Part I: Eleanor Roosevelt, Beth Truman, Mamie Eisenhower, Jaqueline Kennedy

Thirteen women have served as first lady of the United States since Eleanor Roosevelt. The Constitution does not outline any responsibilities for this challenging role, sometimes described as the most demanding volunteer job in America. These remarkable women are wives, mothers and confidants to the most powerful person in the world, in addition to occupying their own place on the international stage. Although not elected, they are often subject to intense public scrutiny. This multimedia lecture will be presented in three parts. Part I will profile first ladies from Eleanor Roosevelt to Jacqueline Kennedy. It will highlight the personal side of life in the White House and the unique contributions each of these women has made to the nation.
Part I: March 5 at 2pm (Eleanor Roosevelt to Jacqueline Kennedy)
Part II: March 24 at 2pm (Ladybird Johnson to Nancy Reagan)
Part III: April 10 at 2pm (Barbara Bush to Melania Trump)

MINDFULNESS MEDITATION with Carolyn Carpentiere
7:30 PM

KEEPING MANHASSET HEALTHY 2018 ~ Take an hour...Just for you.

Meditation helps us to slow down our busy minds and silently observe our thoughts. Our thoughts shape our days and our lives, so by sitting still and paying close attention we can become more aware of what comes up in the mind. As we become more aware, we can choose the direction of our thoughts. Studies have shown that awareness has a powerful effect on healing the mind and body. By focusing and leading the mind away from stressful thoughts toward peaceful thoughts we relieve stress and strengthen the immune system.

MUSEUM HIGHLIGHTS with Ines Powell: ZUBARAN MASTERPIECES ON LOAN FROM AUCKLAND CASTLE
2:00 PM

Exhibition at the Frick Collection, New York, January 31, 2018 to April 22, 2018

The Frick Collection is organizing an exhibition of Francisco de Zurbarán’s series, Jacob and His Twelve Sons. The ambitious series of thirteen life-size paintings depicts the Old Testament figures. On loan from Auckland Castle, in England, the works by the Spanish Golden Age master Francisco de Zurbarán (1598–1664) have never traveled outside Europe.  Zurbarán made the series between 1640 and 1644, based on the Book of Genesis story in which Jacob on his deathbed, called together his 12 sons, who would become the founders of the 12 tribes of Israel.  The series was originally intended to travel, as Catholic propaganda, to the New World where it was commonly believed that indigenous people such as the Aztecs were a lost tribe of Israel. For unknown reasons, the series did not make it to the Americas.   One account states that English pirates stole the paintings.  By 1756, the series was in the possession of the prince-bishop of Durham, Richard Trevor, who resided in Auckland Castle. Bishop Trevor interpreted the subject of the series as a symbols of religious tolerance, a cause that he favored and promoted, at a time when in England, non-Anglican religious groups were treated with intolerance and contempt.
