Hybrid TOTALLY BOOKED! Book Chat for Teens (Grades 6 through 12)

Starting Tuesday, July 5th, the Mansfield Public Library is excited to bring back a bi-weekly teen version of our popular Virtual Book Chat! Our book chat for teens in Grades 6 through 12 is a great way for teens to connect with each other through their love of books and reading! There is no assigned book to discuss, just a great way to tell each other what books you like to read, what you are currently reading and maybe what you want to read! The discussion will be moderated by YA Librarian Whitney Brown, who will also offer reading suggestions for those who are stumped on what to read!
The teen book chat will meet virtually and in-person, which gives teens the option of coming into the library (we’d love to see you!) or participating from home!

This event is free and open to teens in Grades 6 through 12. Registration Required for invitation to Zoom Meeting Room. Registrants will receive the invitation to the Zoom Meeting Room on the day of the event.

For more information on this program or any other adult or teen program at the library, please contact Whitney Brown, Reference/Teen Librarian, at (508) 261-7380 or email wkbrown@sailsinc.org.

Hybrid Mystery Book Club - Crooked House by Agatha Christie

All are welcome to join the Mansfield Public Library Mystery Book Club for an in-person OR virtual discussion of Crooked House by Agatha Christie.

“An exclusive authorized edition of a classic Agatha Christie thriller revolving around a devastating family mystery, described by the Queen of Mystery herself as one of her favorites of her published works — now a feature film from Sony Pictures starring Christina Hendricks, Gillian Anderson, and Glenn Close.

The Leonides are one big happy family living in a sprawling, ramshackle mansion. That is until the head of the household, Aristide, is murdered with a fatal barbiturate injection.

Suspicion naturally falls on the old man’s young widow, fifty years his junior. But the murderer has reckoned without the tenacity of Charles Hayward, fiancé of the late millionaire’s granddaughter. “–Amazon

“Writing Crooked House was pure pleasure and I feel justified in my belief that it is one of my best.” —Agatha Christie

This event is free and open to all. Registration Required for invitation to Zoom Meeting Room.

VIRTUAL Author Talk - Pigeon Scorbion & the Barbershop Detectives by Rick Bleiweiss

Mansfield Public Library is excited to virtually host author Rick Bleiweiss for a discussion of his book, Pigeon Scorbion & the Barbershop Detectives.

“Bleiweiss’s novel is a worthy addition in the tradition of Conan Doyle and Christie. Holmes and Poirot, please make room for Pignon Scorbion.”-Reed Farrel Coleman, New York Times bestselling author of What You Break

For fans of Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot, author Rick Bleiweiss’s quirky new detective and ensemble cast of characters set against the backdrop of small-town England in the 1910s will feel both comfortingly familiar and thrillingly new.

The year is 1910, and in the small and seemingly sleepy English municipality of Haxford, there’s a new chief police inspector. At first, the dapper and unflappable Pignon Scorbion strikes something of an odd figure among the locals, who don’t see a need for such an exacting investigator. But it isn’t long before Haxford finds itself very much in need of a detective.

Luckily, Scorbion and the local barber are old acquaintances, and the barbershop employs a cast of memorable characters who—together with an aspiring young ace reporter for the local Morning News—are nothing less than enthralled by the enigmatic new chief police inspector.

Investigating a trio of crimes whose origins span three continents and half a century, Pignon Scorbion and his “tonsorial sleuths” interview a parade of interested parties, but with every apparent clue, new surprises come to light. And just as it seems nothing can derail Scorbion’s cool head and almost unerring nose for deduction, in walks Thelma Smith—dazzling, whip-smart, and newly single.

Has Pignon Scorbion finally met his match?

Rick Bleiweiss started his career in music as a rock performer, producer of over 50 records (including a Grammy nomination), songwriter and record company senior executive, working with Clive Davis, Melissa Etheridge, the Backstreet Boys, Kiss, U2, Whitney Houston, The BeeGees and other industry legends.

Since 2006 as a publishing company executive, he has acquired works by bestselling and award-winning authors including James Clavell, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Rex Pickett, Leon Uris, and Catherine Coulter among many others.

In his latest creative endeavor, Rick has crafted the Pignon Scorbion historical mystery series—blending his love of the past with the twisty deliciousness of a whodunit.

For fans of Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot, author Rick Bleiweiss’s quirky new detective and ensemble cast of characters set against the backdrop of small-town England in the 1910s, will feel both comfortingly familiar and thrillingly new. –Amazon

Hybrid Mystery Book Club - Girls of Brackenhill by Kate Moretti

All are welcome to join the Mansfield Public Library Mystery Book Club for an in-person OR virtual discussion of Girls of Brackenhill by Kate Moretti.

“Haunted by her sister’s disappearance, a troubled woman becomes consumed by past secrets in this gripping thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of The Vanishing Year.

When Hannah Maloney’s aunt dies in a car accident, she returns to her family’s castle in the Catskills and the epicenter of a childhood trauma: her sister’s unsolved disappearance. It’s been seventeen years, and though desperate to start a new life with her fiancé, Hannah is compelled to question the events of her last summer at Brackenhill.

When a human bone is found near the estate, Hannah is convinced it belongs to her long-lost sister. She launches her own investigation into that magical summer that ended in a nightmare. As strange happenings plague the castle, Hannah uncovers disturbing details about the past and startling realizations about her own repressed childhood memories.

Fueled by guilt over her sister’s vanishing, Hannah becomes obsessed with discovering what happened all those years ago, but by the time Hannah realizes some mysteries are best left buried, it’s too late to stop digging. Overwhelmed by what she has exposed, Hannah isn’t sure her new life can survive her old ghosts.”–Amazon

Hybrid Mystery Book Club - The Good German by Joseph Kanon

All are welcome to join the Mansfield Public Library Mystery Book Club for an in-person OR virtual discussion of The Good German by Joseph Kanon.

“Set in Berlin just after the end of World War II, a brilliant thriller about the end of one war and the beginning of another, by the bestselling author of Los Alamos.

Berlin, 1945. Jake Geismar, former Berlin correspondent for CBS, has managed to wangle one of the coveted press slots for the Potsdam Conference. His assignment: a series of articles on the American occupation of postwar Berlin. His personal agenda: to find Lena, the German mistress he left behind at the outbreak of the war. When he stumbles on a murder–an American soldier washed up on the shore of the conference grounds–he thinks he has found the key that will unlock his Berlin story. What he finds instead is a larger story of corruption and intrigue reaching deep into the heart of the occupation and a city not only physically but morally devastatated, where children scavenge for food in the rubble, sex can be had for a cigarette, and the black market is the only means of survival.

Berlin at zero hour is like nowhere else–a tragedy, and a feverish party after the end of the world. And nothing is simple–not the murder of a soldier and not any of the lives, American and German, that Jake encounters as he tries to solve it. More unsolvable still is the larger crime that hangs over everything in 1945, a crime so huge it seems beyond punishment.

At once a murder mystery, a love story, and a riveting portrait of a unique time and place, The Good German is a historical thriller of the first rank.”–Amazon

Hybrid Mystery Book Club - Death by Chocolate Cherry Cheesecake by Sarah Graves

All are welcome to join the Mansfield Public Library Mystery Book Club for an in-person OR virtual discussion of Death by Chocolate Cherry Cheesecake by Sarah Graves.

Life just got a little sweeter in the island fishing village of Eastport, Maine. Jacobia “Jake” Tiptree and her best friend Ellie are opening a waterfront bake shop, The Chocolate Moose, where their tasty treats pair perfectly with the salty ocean breeze. But while Jake has moved on from fixing up houses, she still can’t resist the urge to snoop into the occasional murder.

Jake and Ellie have been through a lot together, from home repair to homicide investigation. So when they decide to open a chocolate-themed bakery, they figure it’ll be a piece of cake. With Ellie’s old family recipes luring in customers, they expect to make plenty of dough this Fourth of July weekend. Having family home for the holiday only sweetens the deal for Jake—until the ill wind of an early-season hurricane blows up her plans. When the storm hits, Jake’s grown son Sam is stranded in a Boston bus station, and her husband Wade is stuck on a cargo ship. But as bitter as the storm is, something even more sinister is brewing in the kitchen of The Chocolate Moose—where health inspector Matt Muldoon is found murdered.

Ellie never made a secret of her distaste for Matt, who had been raining on their parade with bogus talk of health code violations. Now, with no alibi for the night of the murder, she’s in a sticky situation with the police—and it’s up to Jake to catch the real killer and keep Ellie living in the land of the free.”–Amazon
