Jumpin Juba Band

Mansfield Library warmly welcomes Jumpin' Juba Band to perform at the library for a FREE concert on Thursday June 7 at 6:30pm.

Jumpin' Juba mixes regional blues from Chicago, Memphis and New Orleans together with roots-y rock & roll, jazz, calypso, and Latin flavors. This trio (guitar, piano, drums) features Steve Hurl (guitars, vocal), whose playing draws from the great acoustic blues fingerpickers, and from the blues-y string benders of the 1950s. Bruce Ward's burly piano work recalls such greats as Prof. Longhair, Otis Spann, and Albert Ammons. The band's two CD releases ( Bumpity Bump and Slap Happy) have received regional and overseas airplay, and have garnered many favorable reviews in MA papers and on the web. Jumpin' Juba mixes blues and roots-y rock styles from Memphis, Chicago, and New Orleans. Great piano and guitar! Originals and covers. This event is free and open to all ages! No registration is required. Come on by and enjoy an afternoon of upbeat music!

For more information, please contact Amy Rosa, Reference Librarian, at (508) 261-7380 or arosa@sailsinc.org.

Zentangles Drawing Class

Join us for a free Zentangles Meditative Drawing Class presented by Cindy O'Brien. Zentangle® is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. Through its meditative qualities, it increases focus and creativity and provides an increased sense of peace and personal well being. In the first hour of our Sun Image Zentangle® class, participants learn seven "tangles" which are easy-to-learn step-by-step drawings consisting of either a line, dot or circle which are then combined to create abstract patterns. Drawing the tangles stroke-by-stroke creates a focus which in turn creates a relaxing and meditative state. In the second hour, participants apply the tangles to a unique line drawing of a sun image which they create together step-by-step and can then take home and color. The Sun Image class is taught by Certified Zentangle® Teacher Cindy O'Brien.

Cindy O'Brien, a North Attleboro resident, is the founder and president of the former Village Artisans Collaborative of downtown North Attleboro, MA, owner of the former Artiste Gallery of downtown Mansfield, MA and current owner of Artiste Art and Craft Studio which offers Zentangle® classes, Adult and Children Art and Craft Classes and sponsored Art Events. As a practicing artist for over thirty years, including gallery shows in Provincetown and Newbury Street, Boston, O'Brien's goal as a teacher is to get people excited about art and just have fun!

This class is free and open to teens and adults. Please register below.

Nonfiction Book Club

Join our newest book club at the library! This book club will focus on nonfiction works. This month's title is H is for Hawk by Helen MacDonald. "When Helen Macdonald's father died suddenly on a London street, she was devastated. Captivated by hawks since childhood, the experienced falconer never before been tempted to train one of the most vicious predators, the goshawk. But in her grief, she saw that the goshawk's fierce and feral temperament mirrored her own. Resolving to purchase and raise the deadly creature as a means to cope with her loss, she adopted Mabel, and turned to the guidance of The Once and Future King author T.H. White's chronicle The Goshawk to begin her challenging endeavor. Projecting herself "in the hawk's wild mind to tame her" tested the limits of Macdonald's humanity and changed her life." Please register below.

This month we will be discussing The Girls by Emma Cline.

"Northern California, during the violent end of the 1960s. At the start of summer, a lonely and thoughtful teenager, Evie Boyd, sees a group of girls in the park, and is immediately caught by their freedom, their careless dress, their dangerous aura of abandon. Soon, Evie is in thrall to Suzanne, a mesmerizing older girl, and is drawn into the circle of a soon-to-be infamous cult and the man who is its charismatic leader. Hidden in the hills, their sprawling ranch is eerie and run down, but to Evie, it is exotic, thrilling, charged--a place where she feels desperate to be accepted. As she spends more time away from her mother and the rhythms of her daily life, and as her obsession with Suzanne intensifies, Evie does not realize she is coming closer and closer to unthinkable violence."

New Members are always welcome!
