Reading at the Table

Have you ever gotten in trouble for reading at the dinner table? Come to our new book group just for teens and enjoy some book chat over dinner! Share your book reviews, get recommendations for what to read next, and enjoy some take-out food (this month, it's pizza!). The Teen Librarian will also share some brand new YA titles and give you first dibs on the newest releases before they hit the library shelves.

This is a casual discussion group— no homework, no pressure! Just come ready to talk about something you read recently; fiction, graphic novels, manga, and nonfiction are all welcome.

Intended for teens in grades 6-12. Please pre-register to help us plan for food.

Crafter Dark: Stop-Motion Videos

Stop-motion videos are a way to show off your filmmaking talent, and can be done using nothing but an iPad and a little creativity! Stop motion videos are made by taking a series of pictures, and then flashing those pictures on a screen quickly in sequence. The speed with which one picture replaces the last tricks your brain into seeing motion. This technique is used to make claymation videos like Gumby and Wallace and Gromit, as well as to make pre-computer animated movies like Disney's original Snow White and Cinderella. Learn about stop-motion techniques and make your own video to show your friends!

If you would like to bring your own iPad, please note this in the Comments section of the registration form.

This class is for adults 18+. Please register as space is limited.

“Hooked on Books” Book Club for Intermediate Readers

Are you an intermediate reader who is ready to explore chapter books? Do you like to have fun? Are you “hooked on books?” Then our monthly after-school book club is for you! Each month we will explore a different genre or format.  This month, read Johanna Hurwitz's Fourth Grade Fuss, then join Ms. Kerry for a book talk, a snack and fun activity. (Recommended for intermediate readers. Because reading ability can vary widely, this program is not age- or grade-specific.)

Copies of this month's selection are available at the Children's circulation desk.

This month's genre/format: Realistic Fiction

Fourth grade can be lots of fun, but Julio and his friends know it’s time to get serious when they begin preparing for the big statewide test. They plan to try every trick in the book to make sure they pass: wear their underwear inside out, use brand-new pencils, and even (gulp!) study. But when test day comes, they discover that there are some surprises that you just can’t prepare for!

PLEASE REGISTER

Adult Book Club

This month the Adult Book Club is reading I Liked My Life by Abby Fabiaschi.

"Maddy was a loving, devoted stay-at-home mother . . . until she committed suicide, which left her husband Brady and her teenage daughter Eve heartbroken and reeling, wondering how they can possibly continue without her. Maddy, however, isn't quite done with them. In an attempt to fulfill her family's needs, Maddy watches and meddles from beyond the grave, determined to find the perfect wife and mother to replace herself and heal her family. That's when she finds Rory: a free-spirited schoolteacher, who Maddy maneuvers into Eve's confidences, but who turns out to be harboring a tragedy of her own.."

To check availability or place a hold, please see the catalog.  Copies of the book in various formats can also be picked up anytime at the circulation desk prior to the meeting.

The Electric Myth: The evolution of Creepypasta

Join us for a spooky evening at the library with Sarah Hodge-Wetherbe of GeekGal where she will discuss the evolution of Creepypasta.  Slenderman. The Rake. The Seedeater. Ted the Caver. The internet has become the new forum for our fear. In this panel we’ll look at some of the more famous creepypastas, the psychology behind why they scare us and look at the more popular forms of their stories on the web.

Her dad took her to her first Star Trek convention as a child, sealing her future as a card carrying geek. A library associate with the Springfield city library, she tours around new England lecturing on various aspects of geek culture. She's performed for all sorts of venues from The Norman Rockwell Museum to the Massachusetts library association. She has also staffed many conventions, including a three year stint as head of guest relations at Anime Boston.

Registration is required as space is limited.  Event is recommend for ages 13+
