Race and Song: A Musical Conversation
3:30 PM - 5:30 PM

Presented by the Roslindale Branch of the Boston Public Library

Join the Roslindale Library in welcoming Alastair Moock and Reggie Harris for Race and Song: a Musical Conversation about race. We will screen a recording of the conversation and performance by Reggie and Alastair at 3:30 and follow up with a live Q&A with both performers via zoom starting at 4:30. This program is suitable for grades 3 and up.

What happens when two friends get together? Usually they talk about their lives, they get caught up on the news, maybe listen to each other’s points of view, and share what’s on their minds. And, if they’re musicians, they’re likely to pull out an instrument or two along the way…

In Race and Song: A Musical Conversation, Alastair Moock and Reggie Harris do just that. Only, in this case, these friends of different races, ages, and social backgrounds share how they’ve seen and experienced the world in different ways. They explore issues of race, class, gender and history with an intentionality and generosity of spirit that will draw in kids and adults alike. These aren’t always comfortable topics for discussion, but the discussion –– and the discomfort –– are keys to moving forward.

Together in musical conversation, and with the aid of historical and family photos, Alastair and Reggie open up to each other and frame their perspectives through music (which always helps the medicine go down!). Join these two veteran musicians and storytelling troubadours for a very special performance ––an exploration of the past, the present and the possible.

Got Books: How to Organize Your Genealogical Library and Connect With Others
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

The Leominster Public Library and the Central Massachusetts Genealogical Society present "Got Books? How to Organize Your Genealogical Library and Connect With Others". Attendees will learn the tools, tricks, and organizational styles useful when organizing personal genealogical libraries of all sizes as well as how to best care for your books. With so many repositories & libraries closed due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, personal genealogical libraries, no matter the size, have become an overlooked resource to help researchers conduct research projects. Personal libraries can connect with other personal libraries to create a Virtual Genealogical Community Research Library using LibraryThing.com, a free online cataloging tool.

About the presenter: Kathleen Kaldis is a professional genealogist, genealogical speaker and current president of CMGS. Her interest in genealogy started at a young age when she heard stories about how her great great-grandfather, who was born on Cape Breton Island, came to Boston to build Fenway Park. Her enthusiasm will shine through this live presentation as she shares her passion for genealogy with her audience. Kathleen and her husband grew up on Cape Cod and now live in the historic Kullman house in North Leominster.

American Baby: A Mother, A Child, and the Shadow History of Adoption
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

The American Inspiration author series by American Ancestors New England Historic Genealogical (NEHGS), in partnership with WBUR (Boston), presents author Gabrielle Glaser and her critically acclaimed work of history and investigative journalism.

During the Baby Boom in 1960s America, women were encouraged to stay home and raise large families, but sex and childbirth were taboo subjects. Premarital sex was common, but birth control was hard to acquire and abortion was illegal. In 1961, sixteen-year-old Margaret Erle fell in love and became pregnant. Her enraged family sent her to a maternity home, and after she gave birth, she was stopped from holding her own son. Social workers threatened her with jail until she signed away her parental rights. Her son vanished, his whereabouts and new identity known only to an adoption agency that would never share the details. Don’t miss hearing Margaret’s story and Gabrielle Glaser’s account of this dark time in U.S. history. Her illustrated presentation will be followed by a discussion with broadcast journalist Peter O’Dowd and audience Q+A.

Virtual : We Love our Vacation Homes, but will our Children? Should we Preserve the Legacy, and How?
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Presented by the Vineyard Haven Public Library:

Second homes are often the most valuable asset in one’s estate and require specialized planning to ensure the home stays in the family. Leaving your valuable family home in equal shares to heirs without a master plan is often a recipe for disaster. Join estate planning attorney Tim Borchers, Esq who will share successful approaches abd prompt you to think about your home's protection, succession and preservation. The process starts by identifying these key considerations:

  • History of the island vacation home
  • Protection of the home today
  • Preserving the ability of the family to keep the home in the next generation
  • Merits of selling while you’re living including income tax strategies
  • Merits of requiring heirs to sell out
  • Figuring out your legacy – does it include this home?
  • Fitting your legacy into your estate plan
Tim's speaking engagements have included radio shows, podcasts, lectures at MA and NY law associations and other Cape Cod community events.  He has CTFA, EPLS™ and AEP® accreditations and is an estate planner
with Borchers Trust Law Group. He is also a co-author of Second Home Savvy
