Space Race to the Moon

The United States and Russia were Cold War rivals competing for dominance in spaceflight during the mid-20th century. Walter Choroszewski outlines the history of this competition from Russia’s first success with Sputnik in 1957 to America’s triumphant Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969. Walter shares surprising details of other lunar missions which were not made public at the time. He also gives credit to science fiction authors of the 19th century that inspired the many brilliant thinkers who collectively turned this fantasy into reality!

The rise in popularity of mug cakes, indulgent desserts using a mug  instead of a cake pan and “baked” in a microwave, is not much of a surprise given how easy they are to make and how quickly you can go from wanting one to eating one! Fight For Space - Where is Your Space Program?

Space Documentaries - Fridays @ the Library. Streamed using Kanopy.

In 1962, spurred by the Cold War, President John F. Kennedy famously made the bold proclamation that NASA would send astronauts to the moon by the end of the decade. The Space Race inspired a generation to pursue careers in science and technology, but as the balance of world power shifted, interest in space exploration declined.

FIGHT FOR SPACE serves as an urgent call to re-awaken our sense of wonder and discovery and features commentary by Bill Nye and Neil deGrasse Tyson.

Running Time = 93 minutes

This summer Youth Services is offering cooking for programs for kids! We are going to have three cooking classes where kids will learn some basic kitchen skills to help cook at home. If you come to all three of the classes, you will keep adding to what you learned, but if you only make it to one or two, that is fine too!

For today's program we are going to learn how to make pizza and decorate cookies! Below is a list of the ingredients. Please tell a Youth Services Librarian if there is something on the list your child cannot eat. We will accomodate anyone who has allergies or cannot eat the food.

  • English muffins
  • Tomato sauce
  • Mozzarella cheese
  • Olives
  • Peppers
  • Plain sugar cookies
  • Icing
  • Food coloring
  • Sprinkles

Children in grades *K - 5 are welcome.

Urban Roots: Urban Gardens in Detroit

Summer in the Garden Series @ the Library. Streamed using Kanopy.

This is the story of the spontaneous emergence of urban farming in the city of Detroit. Detroit, once an industrial powerhouse, is a city devastated by the loss of half its population due to the collapse of manufacturing. By the looks of it, the city has died. But now, against all odds, in the empty lots, in the old factory yards, and the sad, sagging blocks of company housing, seeds of change are taking root.

Movie: Galaxy Quest

As we wind down Summer Reading’s Universe of Stories, we present a light-hearted story from out of this galaxy. Twenty years after their hit series is cancelled, the five stars of the “classic” '70s series "Galaxy Quest" are still making appearances at sci-fi conventions. A group of aliens who have mistaken intercepted television transmissions for "historical documents" arrive at a convention and whisk "Commander Peter Quincy Taggart" and his crew into space to help them in their all-too-real war against a deadly adversary. With no script, no director and no clue about real space travel, the actors have to turn in the performances of their lives to become the heroes the aliens believe them to be. “Intelligent and humorous satire with an excellent cast -- no previous Trekkie knowledge needed to enjoy this one.”

Starring: Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman
Release Year: 1999
Rating: PG (for some action violence, mild language and sensuality)
Running Time: 102 Minutes

Back to the Garden: Flower Power comes Full Circle

Summer in the Garden Series @ the Library. Streamed using Kanopy.

In Rural Washington state in 1988, Kevin Tomlinson filmed a group of "hippies" who had been living off the land since the 70s. In this poignant examination of an alternative community seen over time, he tracks down the original interviewees and explores what the glories and sufferings of living off the grid really entailed...and of hippie children who today question whether free love was really free.

Running Time = 59 minutes

Year = 2011

No registration needed.

Movie: The Public

An unusually bitter Arctic blast has made its way to downtown Cincinnati and the front doors of the public library where the action of the film takes place. At odds with library officials over how to handle the extreme weather event, some homeless patrons turn the building into a shelter for the night by staging an "Occupy" sit in. What begins as an act of civil disobedience becomes a stand-off with police and a rush-to-judgment media constantly speculating about what's really happening. This David versus Goliath story tackles some of our nation's most challenging issues, homelessness and mental illness and sets the drama inside one of the last bastions of democracy-in-action: your public library.

Starring: Alec Baldwin, Emilio Estevez, Jena Malone
Release Year: 2019
Rating: PG-13 (for thematic material, nudity, language, and some suggestive content)
Running Time: 122 Minutes

Exhibition on Screen: The Artist's Garden, American Impressionism

Summer in the Garden Series @ the Library. Streamed using Kanopy.

Taking its lead from French artists like Renoir and Monet, the American impressionist movement followed its own path which over a forty-year period reveals as much about America as a nation as it does about its art as a creative power-house. It's a story closely tied to a love of gardens and a desire to preserve nature in a rapidly urbanizing nation. Travelling to studios, gardens and iconic locations throughout the United States, UK and France, this mesmerising film is a feast for the eyes.

Running Time = 88 minutes

Year = 2017

No registration needed.
