1000 Books Before Kindergarten, for ages 5 and under

For ages 5 years and under, with a caregiver.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten is a self-paced program that encourages you to read 1000 books with your child before he or she starts school. 

Sound overwhelming?  We promise, it’s easier than you think!  1 book every day = 365 books in a year!  3 books every day = 1095 books in a year!

This program will run all year long so go at your own pace!  At every 100-book milestone, stop at the Youth Services Desk at the Lawrence Branch (whenever Youth Service Librarians are present) to receive a prize and your next tally sheet!

ABC Toys

ABC Play is an unstructured play and learn period that has letter-learning toys to promote early literacy. These rotating materials will be out in the youth department near the Library's Picture Books and Early Readers.

We have: magnetic letters, block sets, flash cards and phonics sets, snap and learn letter sets, felt board alphabets, carpet squares, chalk boards and beading letters.
It is for caregivers and children ages 1-5.

Registration is not required, drop in any time during the hour.  Cleanup begins an hour after start time.

Join us as we get ready for the holidays with drop-in stations for children and families. These will be self-directed activities for you to participate in at your own pace.

No registration is needed. 

Activities at our tables will repeat and may include some or all of the following at any one time, as space permits and while supplies last: crafts, worksheets, scavenger hunts, contests, preschool wooden train table , felt board and magnets; Take your own photo in front of our inflatable Buddy the Elf decoration.

This chess club is a session of informative learning about several aspects of chess. This club will be an opportunity for student learners to gain a tactical advantage over their opponents by applying logical strategies. The strategies can be applied in the opening, middle, and end phases of the game. They will also be introduces to traditional weaknesses in pawn positions. After in-depth knowledge of the strategies provided, students would be ready to play in local tournaments.

Use the weekly writing prompt to write a postcard for a librarian.  Add some color with markers, rubber stamps, and stickers, then put a stamp on it and place it in our “mailbox.” “Mail” will be collected at 5pm and displayed in the Children’s Department.

Robert (1917-1977) and Amy Lowell (1874–1925) were cousins. Both of them were from the same Boston Brahmin family, and both had great influence on twentieth century American poetry. Born 43 years earlier, Amy Lowell was a leading figure of the Imagist movement. Babywearing Dance Party for ages 4-23 months

Babies love to dance!  Babywearing caregivers are invited to shake, shimmy, and slide with us as we dance our way through our playlist of fun, up-beat songs.  Bring your own baby carrier (wrap, ring sling, pouch sling, meh dai, or buckle/soft structured carrier), and make sure you and baby are comfortable using it before attending.  While having a baby carrier is recommended, it isn’t required to participate.

This chess club is a session of informative learning about several aspects of chess. This club will be an opportunity for student learners to gain a tactical advantage over their opponents by applying logical strategies. The strategies can be applied in the opening, middle, and end phases of the game. They will also be introduces to traditional weaknesses in pawn positions. After in-depth knowledge of the strategies provided, students would be ready to play in local tournaments.

Christmas & Holiday Station for children

Join us as we get ready for the holidays with drop-in stations for children and families. These will be self-directed activities for you to participate in at your own pace.

No registration is needed. 

Activities at our tables will repeat and may include some or all of the following at any one time, as space permits and while supplies last: crafts, worksheets, scavenger hunts, contests, preschool wooden train table , felt board and magnets; Take your own photo in front of our inflatable Buddy the Elf decoration.

Caregiver supervision required. Crafts will not be available to take out; Children should be present in the Library to participate.

Books for Kids:  We are collecting unwrapped NEW or LIKE NEW books for children in community agencies, in partnership with NJLA. Bring one to donate! Take a blank sign-up sheet for this year’s Winter Reading program. Don’t forget to check out a holiday book from our display. ‘Tis the Season to be Reading!

Explorations! Vintage Embossed Ornaments

Do you love handmade ornaments? We’ll make homemade ornaments with a vintage look! 

Using foil & seasonal natural cut-outs, with a black paint patina technique, we’ll create hanging ornaments reminiscent of vintage tin ornaments!

Using seasonal natural cut-outs, press along the foil to reveal the shape below! Then paint with black paint & quickly wipe away to create a patina!

These embossed ornaments are very attractive and make a fun sensory activity!
