Uncovering Trenton's Unique Colonial Steelworks: Archaeological Excavations at Petty's Run

Before the battles for Independence, Trenton saw another revolution: one of the first steelworks in North America.  Large-scale archaeological excavations and historical research have located the remains of the steel furnace and other features at Petty’s Run, next to the New Jersey Statehouse.  Dr. Ian Burrow, who directed the archaeological project, will explain what was found and the important story it tells. Dr. Dobrinka Chiekova, adjunct professor of history at The College of New Jersey, will discuss the special social and political conditions in ancient Athens which set the stage for democracy. She will discuss whether or not democracy was really inevitable; why ordinary citizens embraced and protected it; and how our understanding of democracy today resembles and differs from that of the Athenian citizen 2,500 years ago.
