This talk will focus on the experiences of fugitive slaves from Natchitoches, Louisiana to Nacogdoches Spanish Texas in the early nineteenth century. In the aftermath of the Louisiana Purchase (1803), increased workloads, closer scrutiny of slaves, and the passage of new laws that reshaped Louisiana slavery prompted many enslaved Louisianans to escape on what scholar Mekala Audain calls the Southern Underground Railroad to Spanish Texas.
