The Lost Cause: How the South Saw the U.S. Civil War
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Adult Program

The Lost Cause was a movement created by the South to justify their guilt in starting the war. It was built on dishonest and badly distorted historical claims. Several generations of Southerners were raised to believe it. It even attained a status of believability in the North.

The Lost Cause creates a romanticized, mythical view of the old South that never existed. The result was a racist, frequently violent culture that lasted until modern times. Northern media, including the movie and TV industries, contributed to this illusion.

Presented by local historian Martin Mosho.

Registration begins on March 22. Register online at www.mcl.org (Adult Programs), or call 609-448-0957 for assistance.

Transcontinental Railroad: “Done”
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Adult Program

Local historian John Kilbride will present a slide presentation on the building of the Transcontinental Railroad, currently celebrating its 150th anniversary. Upon the driving of the golden spike at Promontory Point (UT) on May 10, 1869, the telegraph message “DONE” was sent out, signaling the completion of our nation’s first transcontinental railroad. Stretching 1,756 miles between Omaha, Nebraska, and Sacramento, California, the Union Pacific and Central Pacific Railroads worked toward each other in an effort to lay the most track and thereby receive government monies based on their production.

The six-year effort, aiding in the healing of and uniting a nation torn apart by the U.S. Civil War, is a tale of investors who risked their businesses and money, politicians who understood its importance, engineers and surveyors who risked their lives, Irish and Chinese immigrants, defeated Confederate soldiers, and other laborers who did the backbreaking and dangerous work on the tracks.

Considered one of the greatest American technological feats of the 19th century, the completed line served as a vital link for trade, commerce, and travel, and opened up the vast western regions of the United States for settlement.

Now retired from a 34-year (Amtrak) railroad career, John Kilbride is the moderator of the Camden & Amboy Railroad Historians and Railroads of Trenton (Facebook) groups, studying the C&A since moving to New Jersey in 1979. He advises local historians on specific historical aspects of both the C&A and the Pennsylvania Railroad in New Jersey.
