Thursday Night Book Club
7:00 PM

Join our Thursday Night Book Club, facilitated by a Ewing Branch librarian, and discuss great books you might otherwise have overlooked! Each month, we'll discuss a contemporary novel selected specifically for its book club appeal.

For our first meeting, we thought it would be fun for each of us to share a book we've read during the library's closure, so that we might entice others to read it as well! Sharing with other readers a favorite book is one of the joys of reading, and will give us the opportunity to add to our list of "must-read" titles, based on recommendations of fellow readers.

Registration with an email is required, so we can send you a link to connect through GoToMeeting. You will receive the link approximately 24 hours before the program.

Cool Math You Never Learned in School, Part 1
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Cool Math You Never Learned in School: Mathematics of Platonic Solids

From ancient times it was believed that there existed five Platonic Solids - the cube, the tetrahedron, the octahedron, the dodecahedron, and the icosahedron. However, nobody knew why there were only five or whether there were more. Prof. Gyan Bhanot from Rutgers University Department of Physics, provides fascinating insights into the geometry of Platonic Solids, and presents simple mathematical arguments to establish that there can only be five Platonic Solids.

Please Note: This is a two-part series. Part 1 is scheduled for Monday, August 24, 7:00 p.m.; Part 2 is scheduled for Monday, August 31, 7:00 p.m. You will be automatically registered for both sessions.

“Intricately plotted, exceedingly moving story…with insights into the social and cultural history of passing, while telling what is at heart a tender story about sisterhood, identity and, as Bennett said, 'the endlessly interesting question of which elements in our identity are innate, and which do we choose?'" – San Francisco Chronicle

Cool Math You Never Learned in School, Part 2
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Cool Math You Never Learned in School: The Konigsberg Bridges, Graph Theory and the Four Color Problem

The city of Konigsberg was connected to Kneiphof Island though seven different bridges. Citizens would walk over a bridge to the Island and back and wonder if it was possible to do so without ever having to cross the same bridge twice. No matter how hard they tried, they could not do it. Prof. Gyan Bhanot from Rutgers University, Department of Physics will present a fascinating history of this mathematical problem starting from the research conducted by the famous mathematician Euler to more recent mathematical approaches involving graph theory.
