The Birth of Democracy
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Democracy was invented more than 2500 years ago in Ancient Greece. We are still building it. Dr. Dobrinka Chiekova, Adjunct Professor in the History department at The College of New Jersey, will discuss the special social and political conditions in Ancient Athens, which allowed the invention of democracy. We will ask whether or not democracy was really inevitable. We will consider why the ordinary citizens embraced and protected it. We will conclude by discussing how our understanding of democracy today resembles and differs from the understanding of the Athenian citizen, 2500 years ago.
