Poetry Circle: John Ashbery
7:00 PM

John Ashbery (1927-2017) was recognized as one of the most important and influential poets of the contemporary American literature. He  won nearly every major American award for poetry. In 2011, he was given a National Humanities Medal and credited with changing “how we read poetry”. Ashbery’s phrases always feel newly minted; his poems emphasize verbal surprise and delight, not the ways that linguistic patterns restrict us. He is an enigmatic genius of modern poetry whose energy, daring and boundless command of language raised American verse to brilliant and baffling heights. Registration suggested.
