Poetry Circle: Langston Hughes and the Harlem Rennaissance

Langston Hughes (1902-1967) was one of the leading poets of the Harlem Renaissance, a distinctive period of African-American arts and culture that developed in the New York neighborhood following World War I. Hughes' poetry is known for its lyricism and accessibility, detailing African-American identity in early 20th century America. Like many of his contemporaries, Hughes included vernacular, jazz rhythms, and gospel hymn influences in his writing. Hughes contributed to the growth of African-American arts and entertainment during the Roaring 20s while laying the way for future schools of poetry and writing as well as pursuits of civil rights and liberties.
