Morning Book Club: Small Great Things, by Jodi Picoult
10:00 AM

The novel is based on the true story of a labor and delivery nurse who was prohibited from caring for a newborn because the father requested that no African-American nurses tend to his baby. In the fictional version, Ruth, the African-American nurse in question, finds herself on trial for events related to the same request made by a white supremacist father. Using the narratives of Ruth, the baby’s father, and the female public defender who takes Ruth’s case, Picoult examines multiple facets of racism. Registration is suggested.

Foreign Film: I Am Not a Witch (2017)
6:30 PM

In her BAFTA award-winning debut feature, Rungano Nyoni crafts a satiric feminist fairy-tale set in present-day Zambia. When 9-year old orphan Shula is accused of witchcraft, she is exiled to a witch camp run by Mr. Banda, a corrupt and inept government official. Tied to the ground by a white ribbon, Shula is told that she will turn into a goat if she tries to escape. As the only child witch, Shula quickly becomes a local star and the adults around her exploit her supposed powers for financial gain. Soon she is forced to make a difficult decision – whether to resign herself to life on the camp, or take a risk for freedom. 93 minutes, not rated. Registration is suggested.

Poetry Circle: Ezra Pound
7:00 PM

Ezra Pound (1885–1972) was not only a major literary figure in the twentieth century, but also a restless poet of a myriad of voices, a sharp-eyed magpie sifting through several thousand years of western and oriental poetry in an octave of  languages, a free-spirited translator,  haphazard scholar, the better fabricator with scissors insisting on the direct and the concrete, a crusader crying “Make it new” while smashing idols in creaky literary traditions, a modern poetry’s roman candle, a lost troubadour wandering forked paths in a world at war,  an idealist peddling a corkscrew economic theory to drive thieves from the temple, a warped drum-thumping bigot, a traitor caged, a madman cast into an asylum and cast out as merely an old poet, an undiminished spirit working to the end to recapture thousands of fragmentary memories within his epic vortex of voices in and beyond time. Registration is suggested.
