Fiction Writing Workshop: Part I
10:00 AM

Lauren B. Davis: Writing from the Senses and Creating Believable Fiction

Our job as writers is to create emotion in our readers. We aren’t trying to reveal what our characters are feeling, but rather to make our readers feel right along with them, and to believe in the characters and their world. This workshop explains what concrete, significant details are, and how to use them to make your reader feel as though they’re dreaming with eyes wide open. Lauren will use a combination of lecture and writing exercises, so be sure to bring pen and paper.  The lessons will be reviewed and implemented during the second part of the workshop on November 17, without Lauren being present. 7:00 PM

The French poet Charles Baudelaire established for himself a unique place in literature, with poems that demonstrate brilliant skill with poetic forms, and express the new realities of life in Paris, which underwent a stunning transformation during his lifetime. His works represent to many readers the beginning of modern poetry, and indeed, he is credited with coining the term modernité (modernity). He used traditional forms in new ways, and also developed the use of prose poems. He showed that a poet chooses his own style, and can feel free to disregard all rules of poetry if he chooses. Registration is suggested.
