The whole family—their two daughters and two sons, their grandchildren, even their faithful old dog—is on the porch, listening contentedly as Abby tells the tale they have heard so many times before. And yet this gathering is different too: Abby and Red are growing older, and decisions must be made about how best to look after them, and the fate of the house so lovingly built by Red’s father." —Provided by publisher.

Philosophy of Karma Insight Session
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

What goes around comes around…Life is made up of action and reaction – nothing less. One of the most essential laws of the universe is the Law of Karma; for every action, there is a reaction of the same proportion as the original action.

Our universe is a hall of mirrors, each moment a reflection of an earlier scene or interaction. Which means, of course, that each moment is a unique opportunity to avoid doing anything that will bring us future pain and, instead, sow a seed that will bring us the sweetest of fruits. Our consciousness behind every action is creating our life and this understanding becomes an incentive to create pure and positive karma. You can draw the line of your destiny with the pen of your elevated actions.

Please join us as we explore the philosophy of karma.

Facilitated by library staff member Leena, a 10 year practitioner of Rajyoga meditation, delivers youth and adult programs on values and facilitates workshops on topics such as Harmony in Relationships, Stress Free Living, & more. She conducts classes at different Brahmakumaris locations including Piscataway New Jersey and at Peace Village Retreat Center in New York.

Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon, the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him “the bitter neighbor from hell.” But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

Then a young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, setting off a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. The amusing and the poignant stories will change one cranky old man and shake the very foundations of a local residents’ association.

Adult Program

Rated R; 139 minutes

This is the extraordinary true story of Desmond Doss who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. He was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong. As an army medic, he singlehandedly evacuated the wounded from behind enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers, and sustained grenade wounds and sniper bullets.

History Talk: The Delaware & Raritan Canal
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Did you know that for more than 170 years, the Delaware and Raritan Canal has meandered across the narrow waist of New Jersey? Did you know that the D&R was one of our nation’s most successful towpath canals, carrying more tonnage in 1866 than the more famous Erie Canal? Did you know that Johnson & Johnson, Roebling, and Fleischmann’s Distillery all had their start along the D&R? And did you know that the canal provides the people of central New Jersey with both a water supply and a premier recreational facility?

Canal author and historian Linda J. Barth will introduce you to the people, the bridges, the locks, and the aqueducts that made the canal work. This waterway, now the centerpiece of a popular state park, transported men and supplies between New York and Philadelphia during three wars. Inventor John Holland used the canal to deliver his Holland VI submarine to Washington for its Navy trials, and luxury yachts, like J .P. Morgan’s Tarantula, cruised the waterway. Come learn more about this gem of central New Jersey.

Registration requested.
