Madama Butterfly Goes to Paris; Isabella Gardner goes to Japan
7:00 PM

Madama Butterfy is the featured opera in the 2018 edition of the Princeton Festival.

In the five short decades between Admiral Perry's arrival in Yokohama Harbor and Madame Butterfly's first appearance as a character in an American short story, a great wave of enthusiasm for all things Japanese swept the world:  art, fashion, home decor and collecting were all captivated by 'Japonism'.  Marianne Grey, a Docent at the Princeton University Art Museum, will take us traveling with Mark Twain, Henry Adams, Isabella Stewart Gardener, John LaFarge and Lafcadio Hearn as they explore Japan.  We will also eavesdrop on what Japanese visitors to America have to say about their adventures in the New World. Registration is suggested.
