Be SMART Heading into the Holidays

The hustle and bustle of the holiday season is around the corner. If you’re visiting family or friends this year, there’s one important thing you need to add to your holiday checklist: talking about responsible gun storage. Be SMART for Kids is an educational campaign created by Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America to protect children by promoting responsible gun ownership and reducing child gun deaths. The campaign focuses on education and awareness about unintentional injuries or deaths of children caused by unsecured firearms.

Registration with an email is required, so we can send you a link to connect through GoToMeeting. You will receive the link approximately 24 hours before the program.

Poetry Circle: Jorge Luis Borges (VIRTUAL)

All are welcome to join MCL poetry circle group to read and discuss Jorge Luis Borges’s poetry. Borges (1899 – 1986), is one of the most important writers of the 20th Century, a major Latin American poet and librarian who once wrote, “I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library.” Argentine by birth, but nurtured on universal literature, Borges has effectively influenced the destiny of literature. Borges cultivated three genres: the essay, the poem, and the short story. In creating the most original writing of his time, Borges taught us that creation is recreation, that we are all one contradictory mind, connected amongst each other through time, space and poetry. Sharon, a librarian for the Lawrence Branch, will lead the discussion.

The Harlem Renaissance: Courage, Grace, and Vision

The Harlem Renaissance was the beginning of an explosion in creativity that transformed African American identity and history, but it also transformed American culture in general. Never before had so many people of all backgrounds read the thoughts of African Americans and embraced the black community’s productions, expressions, and style in art, literature, music, dance, and theater. This talk will introduce you to many of the inspired artists who produced astonishing and ground-breaking works.

This evening's presenter, Janet Mandel, taught in New Jersey’s public schools for 32 years, educating students in English, art history, and World Languages and Cultures. Now retired, Janet presents illustrated talks on a variety of art history topics at adult schools, libraries, museums, senior centers, community centers, and similar venues.

Registration with an email is required, so we can send you a link to connect through GoToMeeting. You will receive the link approximately 24 hours before the program.
