(Virtual) Hava Nagila: How a Song Defines a People

The song "Hava Nagila" is instantly recognizable; musical shorthand for anything Jewish, a happy party tune that you dance to at weddings, bar mitzvahs and even at Major League Baseball games. It carries with it an entire constellation of history, values and hopes for the future. In its own believe-it-or-not way, "Hava Nagila" encapsulates the Jewish journey over the past 150 years. It also reveals the power of one song to express and sustain identity, to transmit lessons across generations and to bridge cultural divides and connect us all on a universal level. Includes performances by many artists. Presented by lecturer, historian, and composer, Jeff Kampf of Life Long Cognition.

Registration with an email is required, so we can send you a link to connect through GoToMeeting. You will receive the link approximately 24 hours before the program.

Skills Developed by a Free Hunterdon County Black Man: 1754-1836

Local historian, Larry Kidder, shares the story of Jacob Francis, who was born free in Amwell Township, served as an indentured servant to age 21, served in the Continental Army – including the Battle of Trenton – and New Jersey militia, then established himself against all odds as a successful farmer. He interacted with many enslaved people, including the woman he married and set free, and helped his son develop skills to be an important abolitionist seeking not just an end to enslavement but also racial equality. Throughout his life, Jacob developed many physical and mental skills needed to overcome the racist obstacles that society placed in his path. The life of Jacob Francis and the family he created with his wife, Mary, richly illustrates how human beings often have to reach deeply and persistently to acquire and use important skills. Co-sponsored with Hopewell Valley Historical Society.

This event is part of Hopewell Valley Heritage Week, a week of events providing opportuniies for all ages to celebrate the rich history of Hopewell Valley.

Registration prior to event is required.

(Virtual) The Life and Work of Georgia O’Keeffe, “Mother of American Modernism”

Join us as Jeanne Johnson, famed for her hour-long-in-depth studies of artists, guides us through the life and work of Georgia O’Keeffe (1887-1986), “Mother of American Modernism”. O’Keeffe is mostly known for her paintings of enlarged flowers, however, throughout her long career she painted a range of subjects—from New York skyscrapers to desert scenes, cow skulls, and adobe architecture. O’Keeffe’s work was highly skilled and so precise it oscillated between realism and abstraction. Viewing a retrospective of her work, you will learn facts and people associated with Georgia that you may not know, people who inspired her, some who hurt her, some that she hurt.

Jeanne Johnson's interest in art and music have taken her to more than 87 countries in pursuit of her passions.  Since retiring from a successful career as a classically trained musician, she has become an active volunteer currently serving on the Princeton University Art Museum Docent Assoc. Board, and as president of Newcomers and Friends @ YWCA Princeton.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Lawrence Library.

Registration with an email is required, so we can send you a link to connect through GoToMeeting. You will receive the link approximately 24 hours before the program.

(Virtual) Stories of Slavery in New Jersey

June 19th, also known as Juneteenth, is the oldest known holiday that commemorates the end of slavery. It marks the date in 1865 when the last group of enslaved people in Galveston, Texas learned that they were free under the Emancipation Proclamation. As a federal holiday, it is a time to time to reflect on the past and look to the future. Author Rick Geffken reveals stories from New Jersey’s history of slavery. Many may be surprised that New Jersey, in 1866, was the last northern state to abolish slavery. Dutch and English settlers brought the first enslaved people to New Jersey in the seventeenth century. By the time of the Revolutionary War, slavery was an established practice on labor-intensive farms throughout what became known as the Garden State.

Registration with an email is required, so we can send you a link to connect through GoToMeeting. You will receive the link approximately 24 hours before the program.
