Memoir Book Club
5:00 PM - 6:00 PM

Join us to discuss I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou.

Here is a book as joyous and painful, as mysterious and memorable, as childhood itself. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings captures the longing of lonely children, the brute insult of bigotry, and the wonder of words that can make the world right. Maya Angelou’s debut memoir is a modern American classic beloved worldwide.

Sent by their mother to live with their devout, self-sufficient grandmother in a small Southern town, Maya and her brother, Bailey, endure the ache of abandonment and the prejudice of the local “powhitetrash.” At eight years old and back at her mother’s side in St. Louis, Maya is attacked by a man many times her age—and has to live with the consequences for a lifetime. Years later, in San Francisco, Maya learns that love for herself, the kindness of others, her own strong spirit, and the ideas of great authors (“I met and fell in love with William Shakespeare”) will allow her to be free instead of imprisoned.

Poetic and powerful,
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings will touch hearts and change minds for as long as people read.    -Goodreads

Copies are available at the main desk at the library.

Email Erica at ecote@minlib.net to get on the Memoir Book Club mailing list for scheduling updates, book selections, and Zoom links when necessary.

Love In All Its Forms: A Valentine's Day Reading and Performance
6:30 PM - 7:45 PM

Valentine’s Day is meant to be all about love – but what do we really mean by love? Love for a special someone? A family member? A pet?  How about a place? Or even a love of food?  Experience “Love in All Its Forms” in a FREE special literary event at the Medfield Library on Feb. 16  at 6:30 p.m.  Local writers from the New England Indie Authors Collective, and special guest Stephanie Schorow will answer the question “What’s Love Got to Do With It” in prose and performance. Authors Randy Ross, Judah Leblang and Jason M. Rubin explore love from happiness to heartbreak, gay and straight, factual to fairy tale. Stephanie Schorow is known for her nonfiction books on the Cocoanut Grove Nightclub fire, Boston’s notorious sexual playground, the Combat Zone and the Great Boston Fire. Bring a date or a loved one (adults only, please) and enjoy the depth of the human heart.

This performance features adult themes and is for patrons ages 18 and older.

An America Divided: Can We Live With One Another? with New Yorker Staff Writer, Emma Green - VIRTUAL
7:30 PM - 8:30 PM
Join Emma Green in this exploration of the ways that Americans are divided - politically, religiously, economically, communities, and even families. What has caused these ruptures and what are some ways for us to come back together? Pulling from the many, many people she has spoken to over the years as well as her articles on the Federalist Society, the Supreme Court, and Affirmative Action, Emma will lead us in this difficult but essential discussion!

Emma Green is a staff writer at The New Yorker who covers education and academia. She was previously a staff writer at The Atlantic, where she covered religion and politics, and where she also served as managing editor. Her work has been anthologized in several books, including “The American Crisis” and “The God Beat,” and has won a number of awards, including the George W. Hunt, S.J., Prize for Excellence in Journalism, Arts & Letters and the Supple Award for feature writing from the Religion News Association.

We're thrilled to be collaborating with a multitude of MA Libraries to bring this program to our communities, and thank the Ashland Public Library for organizing the event.

Please register for this event and you'll receive the link in the confirmation and reminder emails - make sure to check your spam folder for them. The email will be coming from Zoom.
