Fiction Book Club for Adults
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Join us this month to discuss The Boy In The Field by Margot Livesey

One September afternoon in 1999, teenagers Matthew, Zoe, and Duncan Lang are walking home from school when they discover a boy lying in a field, bloody and unconscious. Thanks to their intervention, the boy’s life is saved. In the aftermath, all three siblings are irrevocably changed. Matthew, the oldest, becomes obsessed with tracking down the assailant, secretly searching the local town with the victim’s brother. Zoe wanders the streets of Oxford, looking at men, and one of them, a visiting American graduate student, looks back. Duncan, the youngest, who has seldom thought about being adopted, suddenly decides he wants to find his birth mother. Overshadowing all three is the awareness that something is amiss in their parents’ marriage. Over the course of the autumn, as each of the siblings confronts the complications and contradictions of their approaching adulthood, they find themselves at once drawn together and driven apart.

Written with the deceptive simplicity and power of a fable, The Boy in the Field showcases Margot Livesey’s unmatched ability to “tell her tale masterfully, with intelligence, tenderness, and a shrewd understanding of all our mercurial human impulses” (Lily King, author of Euphoria
). -Goodreads

Memoir Book Club
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Join us this month to discuss Priestdaddy by Patricia Lockwood.

"From Patricia Lockwood - a writer acclaimed for her wildly original voice - a vivid, heartbreakingly funny memoir about having a married Catholic priest for a father.

Father Greg Lockwood is unlike any Catholic priest you have ever met - a man who lounges in boxer shorts, who loves action movies, and whose constant jamming on the guitar reverberates "like a whole band dying in a plane crash in 1972". His daughter is an irreverent poet who long ago left the church's country. When an unexpected crisis leads her and her husband to move back into her parents' rectory, their two worlds collide.

Lockwood pivots from the raunchy to the sublime, from the comic to the deeply serious, exploring issues of belief, belonging, and personhood. Priestdaddy is an entertaining, unforgettable portrait of a deeply odd religious upbringing and how one balances a hard-won identity with the weight of family and tradition." -Amazon

Copies are available at the library.  New members always welcome.

Author Talk with Gregg Mokrzycki
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Join us for a conversation with novelist Gregg Mokrzycki, author of In The Absence of Struggle

Gregg Mokrzycki is a forensic scientist who lives in Northern Virginia. Each year he explores the West with his wife and 3 kids in a rented RV. They nickname themselves the Corps of Discovery. The only rule for the trip is: No agenda, let adventure unfold. This is Gregg's debut novel. He was inspired to write it when, at the Christmas Eve burial of his mother, he spied his father's casket. The last time he had seen it was when he was a 7 year old boy.
....................................................................................................
"As Klu lay sprawled on his mother's dented casket, his back stung as did the reality of his failed suicide at the grave. Maybe his dad was right: Man makes plans, God laughs. Was Klu's hobby of collecting grave rubbings part of a higher plan? Was it God's hand that drove him on a quest to the largest tree in the world to restore what was wrongfully taken from his parents? And was the derecho storm destiny, when its mass outage freed Klu to break into the Father of Our Country's tomb and steal him as a travel companion? When the heart attack took his father 15 years earlier, Klu thought God robbed him of life's instruction book. But maybe God's plan was for Klu to write his own."

Click here to purchase a copy of Gregg's book!
