Medford Public Library invites 2nd and 3rd graders to join us each month. Snack will be provided. Please read the book in advance of book club!

This month we will be discussing Sean Rubin's Bolivar:

What would you do if your neighbor was a dinosaur? Going extinct isn't for everyone. Sybil knows that there is something off about her next door neighbor, but she can't seem to get anyone to believe her. Everyone is so busy going about their days in the busy streets of New York City that they don't notice Bolivar. They don't notice his odd height, his tiny arms, or his long tail. No one but Sybil sees that Bolivar is a dinosaur.

Dark Tide: The Great Molasses Flood with Stephen Puleo

January 19, 1919.

The North End in Boston was the site of a very real and very unusual disaster.  Imagine a massive molasses tank, 50 ft. tall and 90 ft. wide, containing over 2 million gallons, collapsing.  The tsunami of molasses injured and destroyed everything in its wake in the heavily populated North End. It is reported that 50 people were killed, 150 injured, buildings levelled.

Highly regarded author Stephen Puleo (The Boston Italians), tells the story in his book, Dark Tide.

4th and 5th Grade Book Club

Medford Public Library invites 4th and 5th graders to join us each month. Snacks will be provided. If you come to the children's room, we can make sure you have a copy of the book to read in advance of our club meeting.

We will be discussing Erin Entrada Kelly's Hello Universe:

In one day, four lives weave together in unexpected ways. Virgil Salinas is shy. Valencia Somerset loves everything about nature. Kaori Tanaka is a self-proclaimed psychic. And Chet Bullens wishes the weird kids would just act normal so that he can concentrate on basketball. They aren't friends - at least not until Chet pulls a prank that traps Virgil and his pet guinea pig at the bottom of a well. This disaster leads Kaori, Gen, and Valencia on an epic quest to find the missing Virgil. Through luck, smarts, bravery, and a little help from the universe, a rescue is performed, a bully is put in his place, and friendship blooms.

1st Grade Book Club

Medford Public Library invites 1st graders to join us each month. Snack will be provided. Please read the book in advance of book club!

This month we will be discussing Matt De La Pena's Last Stop on Market Street:

Every Sunday after church, CJ and his grandma ride the bus across town. But today, CJ wonders why they don't own a car like his friend Colby. Why doesn't he have an iPod like the boys on the bus? How come they always have to get off in the dirty part of town? Each question is met with an encouraging answer from grandma, who helps him see the beauty - and fun - in their routine and the world around them.

Community Read Author Event

In this talk based on his book, author Doug Most will talk about the science of the subway, the centuries of fears people overcame about traveling underground and tells a story as exciting as any ever ripped from the pages of U.S. history. The Race Underground is a great American saga of two rival American cities, their rich, powerful and sometimes corrupt interests, and an invention that changed the lives of millions.
