4th and 5th grade book club

Medford Public Library invites 4th and 5th graders to join us each month. Snacks will be provided. If you come to the children's room, we can make sure you have a copy of the book to read in advance of our club meeting.

We will be discussing Sarah Weeks and Gita Varadarajan's novel Save Me a Seat:

Joe and Ravi might be from very different places, but they're both stuck in the same place: SCHOOL. Joe's lived in the same town all his life, and was doing just fine unti his best friends moved away and left him on his own. Joe and Ravi don't think they have anything in common - but soon enough they have a common enemy (the biggest bully in their class) and a common mission: to take control of their lives over the course of a single crazy week.

2nd and 3rd grade book club

Medford Public Library invites 2nd and 3rd graders to join us each month. Snack will be provided. Please read the book in advance of book club!

This month we will be discussing Betty Birney's The World According to Humphrey:

You can learn a lot about life by observing another species. That's what Humphrey was told when he was first brought to Room 26. And boy is it true! There are always adventures in the classroom and each weekend he gets to sleep over with a different student, like Lower-Your-Voice-A.J. and Speak-Up Sayeh. Humphrey learns to read, write, shoot rubber bands (only in self-defense, of course), and much more. With a lock-that-doesn't-lock and an adventurous spirit, Humphrey's life would be perfect if only the teacher, Mrs. Brisbane, wasn't out to get him.

1st grade book club

Medford Public Library invites 1st graders to join us each month. Snack will be provided. Please read the book in advance of book club!

This month we will be discussing David Wiesner's Flotsam:

A bright, science-minded boy goes to the beach equipped to collect and examine flotsam - anything floating that has been washed ashore. Bottles, lost toys, small objects of every description are among his usual finds. But there's no way he could have prepared for one particular discovery: a barnacle-encrusted underwater camera, with its own secrets to share... and keep.

4th and 5th grade book club

Medford Public Library invites 4th and 5th graders to join us each month. Snacks will be provided. If you come to the children's room, we can make sure you have a copy of the book to read in advance of our club meeting.

We will be discussing Bette Bao Lord's novel In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson:

Shirley Temple Wong sails from China to America with a heart full of dreams. Her new home is in Brooklyn, New York. America is indeed a land full of wonders, but Shirley doesn't know any English, so it's hard to make friends. Then a miracle happens: baseball! It's 1947, and Jackie Robinson, star of the Brooklyn Dodgers, is a superstar. Suddenly Shirley is playing stickball with her class and following Jackie as he leads the Brooklyn Dodgers to victory after victory. With her hero smashing assumptions and records on the ball field, Shirley begins to feel that America is truly the land of opportunity - and perhaps has also become her real home.

Makerspace: Organizing
People often try to solve all their organizing problems in the how-to aisle or at big-box stores. But self-help books try to shoe-horn you into someone else's system and a shopping spree for organizational tools just fills your house with a new type of clutter. Melanie of Wits End Organizing (witsendorganizing.com) recognizes that there is no one-size-fits-all solution and that you can get organized without buying a thing. Melanie will guide you through the process of evaluating your organizing goals, identifying your problem areas, and breaking down your projects into manageable steps.
Ages 16+. Registration required. Class participants will be sent a survey that must be completed before class.

Garden Club Movie and Popcorn Night

On a wintery evening, enjoy this year's movie and popcorn night featuring the documentary 10 Parks that Changed America.

The movie focuses on 10 visionaries who transformed neglected spaces into welcoming oases of serenity and natural wonder in the midst of urban hubbub. Find out about the heroes who championed these parks and the villains who tried to thwart them, and learn about the history of city parks and the development of landscape architecture in America. The parks covered in the documentary include the squares of Savannah, Georgia, Seattle's Freeway Park, Philadelphia's Fairmont Park, New York City's High Line, and our own Mount Auburn Cemetery, among others.

Free and open to all.
