John Brown Lecture at MHSM

Transcendentalists, Abolitionists, John Brown and Beyond: presented by Richard Smith

Medford Historical Society and Museum at 10 Governors Ave, Medford

John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry brought the United States one step closer to civil war. Many people considered him a fanatic, but a small group of New Englanders did their best to make Brown a hero. Smith will explain why the New England literati adored Brown and how Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Lydia Maria Child, Medford’s George Luther Stearns and others reinvented Brown and turned him into an Abolitionist martyr.

Richard Smith is a writer and public historian who specializes in the Transcendentalists and the Anti-slavery movement.  Jointly sponsored by the Royall House & Slave Quarters, the Friends of the Medford Public Library, and MHSM. Admission is free.

4th and 5th Grade Book Club

We will be discussing Chris Grabenstein's Home Sweet Motel

Eleven-year-old P. T. Wilkie may be the greatest storyteller alive. But he knows one thing for a fact: the Wonderland Motel is the best place a kid could ever live! All-you-can-eat poolside ice cream! A snack machine in the living room! A frog slide! A giant rampaging alligator! (Okay, that last one may or may not be made up.) There’s only one thing the Wonderland doesn’t have, though—customers. And if the Wonderland doesn’t get them soon, P.T. and his friend Gloria may have to say goodbye to their beloved motel forever.

Swing by the Children's Room to pick up a copy of the book before book club meets!

For teens in grades 6-12. No sign up needed, just pop in! This is not the type of program where you need to be present from start to finish. Some teens drop by just to grab a book, others stay longer. Whatever works for you!

*Occasional conflicts will impact the Pop-Up Library schedule. We'll announce any cancelations as soon as possible!
