4th and 5th grade book club

Medford Public Library invites 4th and 5th graders to join us each month. Snacks will be provided. If you come to the children's room, we can make sure you have a copy of the book to read in advance of our club meeting.

We will be discussing James Patterson's novel I Funny:

Jamie Grimm is a middle schooler on a mission: he wants to be the world's greatest standup comedian, even if he doesn't have a lot to laugh about these days. He's new in town and stuck living with his aunt, uncle, and their evil son Stevie, a bully who doesn't let Jamie's wheelchair stop him from messing with Jamie as much as possible. But Jamie doesn't let his situation get him down. When his Uncle Frankie mentions a contest called The Planet's Funniest Kid Comic, Jamie knows he has to enter. But are the judges only rewarding him out of pity because of his wheelchair, like Stevie suggests? Will Jamie ever share the secret of his troubled past instead of hiding behind his comedy act?

Medford Garden Club: Plant/Seed/House Plant Swap

Wondering what to do with those plants left over from your fall divisions?

Do you want to "recycle" your extra plants, bulbs, seeds, or house plants?

Bring them to our October Swap!

Before the swap begins, we'll take some time to ask and answer questions about the plants. Be sure to clearly label your swap donations, just as you would do for the spring plant sale. If you don't have anything to bring, no worries—everyone will have an opportunity to take something home. In fact, expect to be begged to take something home!

Japanese Tea Ceremony

Serving tea and refreshments to a guest is an act of hospitality. In Japan over the last five centuries, this most basic practice has become a rich tradition of art, design, and spirituality, called chado - the Way of the Tea. This term "the way of the tea," also known as "Japanese Tea Ceremony," emphasizes that studying tea is an ongoing practice, a way of life, and a means of seeing the world anew. Come learn more about this piece of Japanese culture from a master of the tea ceremony.

Black Flags, Blue Waters: The Epic History of America’s Most Notorious Pirates

Set against the backdrop of the Age of Exploration, Black Flags, Blue Waters reveals the dramatic and surprising history of American piracy’s “Golden Age”—spanning the late 1600s through the early 1700s—when lawless pirates plied the coastal waters of North America and the Indian Ocean.

Bestselling author Eric Jay Dolin illustrates how American colonists at first supported these outrageous pirates in an early display of colonial solidarity against the Crown, and then violently opposed them. Upending popular misconceptions and cartoonish stereotypes, Black Flags, Blue Waters provides an account of the seafaring outlaws whose raids reflect the precarious nature of American colonial life.

Copies of the book will be on sale at the event.

Rooted in Our History: Medford’s Fascination with Trees

Rooted in Our History: Medford’s Fascination with Trees with Dee Morris

As he rejoiced in the green canopy shading many Medford streets, Charles Brooks (b. 1795) commented that beautiful trees “grace our eyes wherever we turn”. For decades, the Usher Elm on High Street was a landmark because it was thriving in 1775 when Paul Revere galloped by to warn the town about the approaching British. A row of gigantic trees once lined much of Salem Street. Oak Grove Cemetery used them to beautify its eternal landscape. In contrast, single specimens were set out to memorialize events, marriages and heroes. Trees also defined neighborhoods, being carefully nurtured by residents until great age, disease or the unforgiving march of progress brought them down.  Elizur Wright (b. 1804), in promoting the Middlesex Fells, wrote: “Whosoever works for the forests works for the happiness and permanence of our civilization”.

Our local history is very rich in great tree stories!

This program is included in the 2018 Arts Across Medford, a month-long festival held in October, sponsored by CACHE.

Medford Public Library invites 4th and 5th graders to join us each month. Snacks will be provided. If you come to the children's room, we can make sure you have a copy of the book to read in advance of our club meeting.

We will be discussing Erica Perl's novel When Life Gives You O.J.:

For years, 10-year-old Zelly Fried has tried has tried to convince her parents to let her have a dog. After all, practically everyone in Vermont owns a dog, and it sure could go a long way helping Zelly fit in since moving there from Brooklyn. But when her eccentric grandfather Ace hatches a ridiculous plan involving a "practice dog" named O.J., Zelly's not so sure how far she's willing to go to win a dog of her own. Is Ace's plan so crazy it just might work... or is it just plain crazy?

2nd and 3rd grade book club

Medford Public Library invites 2nd and 3rd graders to join us each month. Snack will be provided. Please read the book in advance of book club!

This month we will be discussing Derrick Barnes' Trivia Queen, 3rd Grade Supreme:

A zoologist is coming to visit Ruby's school, and there will be one representative from grade levels 2-8 chosen to compete in an animal trivia contest. The winner will land season passes to the Chill Brook Zoo for everyone in their grade level. Ruby, who can absorb factual information quickly and recall it at any time, is the third grade delegate, and her brothers are on board to help--or hinder--her preparation.

Medford Garden Club: Designing the Urban Garden

Gardening in an urban setting presents challenges beyond those of the typical suburban property. As Sally Naish, a certified landscape designer who tends an urban garden in Arlington, recognizes: space is limited; impermeable surfaces can create drainage issues; soil quality might be compromised; neighborhood noises of people and traffic can be intrusive. You recognize the issues, but don’t always see the solutions. Where to turn for help? Perhaps your lawn crew can do a quick fix, or do the issues warrant the services of a professional landscape designer or landscape architect?

With Sally’s expertise, we’ll look at who does what and offer some solutions to the challenges facing the urban gardener.
