Christmas Traditions in Boston

In 1659, the Massachusetts Bay Colony banned by law the celebration of Christmas and it would not be until 1856 that Christmas Day became a state holiday in Massachusetts. In his newest book Christmas Traditions in Boston, Anthony Sammarco outlines the celebration (or lack thereof) of Christmas in the first two centuries after the town was settled in 1630.  In this lecture, Sammarco will tell tales of Christmas past from the first Boston Christmas trees to the Enchanted Village at Jordan Marsh to the lights on Boston Common.

Anthony M. Sammarco is a noted historian and author of sixty books on the history and development of Boston, and he lectures widely on the history and development of his native city.

A six week series with Mary Muir

Tuesdays January 9, 16, 23, 30 & February 6 & 13 at 10:00 a.m.

Through conversation and writing, the group will share memories of the experiences that make us who we are, tell stories from their lives, and connect with others through shared expression. Participants will be guided through easy to follow exercises to capture in words and images the threads that connect us to one another.  No prior writing experience needed --  just a pen and 8x10 journal or notebook.

Everyone we meet has a story to tell. All that is required is a willingness to come, connect, have fun and capture what is in your heart.  This a great way to meet new friends!

Space is limited so please register for this series.

Mary Muir has a Masters Degree in Counseling Education from Northeastern University. She has post graduate courses in Pastoral Counseling Expressive Arts Education and Facilitation.

Medford Public Library invites 4th and 5th graders to join us each month.  Snacks will be provided.  If you come to the children's room, we can make sure you have a copy of the book to read in advance of our club meeting.

In January we will be kiscussing Wendy Mass's novel 11 Birthdays.  It's Amanda's 11th birthday and she is super excited- after all, 11 is so different from 10.  But from the start, everything goes wrong,  The worst part of it all is that she and her best friend Leo, with whom she's shared every birthday, are on the outs and this will be the rfirst birthday they haven't shared together.  When Amanda turns in for the night, glad to have her birthday behind her, she wakes up happy for a new day.  or is it?  Her birthday seems to be repeating itself.  What is going on?!

Swing by the Children's Room to pick up a copy of the book before the club meets.  Please read the book in advance of the club meeting.

Snacks will be served.

Space is limited so please register here.

Mary Muir has a Masters Degree in Counseling Education from Northeastern University. She has post graduate courses in Pastoral Counseling Expressive Arts Education and Facilitation.
