eBook and Digital Library Workshops

Thursdays, 7-8 p.m. on June 21, July 19, August 23

Join us at any one of our eBook and Digital Library Workshops to learn how to borrow eBooks, Audiobooks, and access Digital Content with your library card from the comfort of your own home or on the go!  Patrons will learn how to borrow and access content using hoopla and OverDrive, learn how to access classic movies, documentaries, and independent films with kanopy, and meet Libby, a “personal librarian app” for OverDrive users!

We will also demonstrate how to access The Great Courses, language learning resources, and travel guides remotely. You’ll learn how to quickly and easily access streaming popular, classical, and jazz music. And we will show you how to access even more digital content via other Massachusetts Library Networks and libraries, including the Boston Public Library.

Attendees will find it helpful to bring your Medford Public Library Card (or the Minuteman App downloaded to your smartphone), as well as your portable device, but this is not required.

Medford Garden Club: Good Bugs and Bad Bugs

Not all insects are bad for the garden. In fact, we rely on many bugs to rid our plants of other unwanted invaders. Kathi Gariepy, a Lifetime Master Gardener, will describe some of the common beneficial and pest insects that gardeners encounter in New England. She will explain their habits and lifecycles so we can understand how they affect – positively or negatively -- the plants in our gardens. Kathi has personal experience with those bugs where she lives in an old farmhouse with perennial borders, an herb garden, a veggie garden, grapes, blueberries, and some very old apple trees.

Makerspace: Cyanotypes

Cyanotype is a photographic printmaking process known for producing images in shades of blue. In this workshop we’ll create contact prints using plant life and found objects, arranged on sensitized paper. Experiment with hand-drawn negatives using film markers, cut-outs and scratch art. Our printing plates will be exposed in sunlight so wear comfortable outdoor shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting a little wet or messy! Feel free to bring along small opaque and semi-opaque objects of your own to use for printing. The class will begin with a discussion on the fundamentals of mixing and prepping emulsions, but there will be no chemical mixing in class.

Mystic Makerspace asks individuals to register for no more than 2 classes per quarter except for drop-in classes.  Email info@mysticmakerspace.org to be added to the waitlist for an additional class.

Medford Public Library invites 4th and 5th graders to join us each month. Snacks will be provided. If you come to the children's room, we can make sure you have a copy of the book to read in advance of our club meeting.

We will be discussing James Patterson's novel I Funny:

Jamie Grimm is a middle schooler on a mission: he wants to be the world's greatest standup comedian, even if he doesn't have a lot to laugh about these days. He's new in town and stuck living with his aunt, uncle, and their evil son Stevie, a bully who doesn't let Jamie's wheelchair stop him from messing with Jamie as much as possible. But Jamie doesn't let his situation get him down. When his Uncle Frankie mentions a contest called The Planet's Funniest Kid Comic, Jamie knows he has to enter. But are the judges only rewarding him out of pity because of his wheelchair, like Stevie suggests? Will Jamie ever share the secret of his troubled past instead of hiding behind his comedy act?

Medford Garden Club: Plant/Seed/House Plant Swap

Wondering what to do with those plants left over from your fall divisions?

Do you want to "recycle" your extra plants, bulbs, seeds, or house plants?

Bring them to our October Swap!

Before the swap begins, we'll take some time to ask and answer questions about the plants. Be sure to clearly label your swap donations, just as you would do for the spring plant sale. If you don't have anything to bring, no worries—everyone will have an opportunity to take something home. In fact, expect to be begged to take something home!

Black Flags, Blue Waters: The Epic History of America’s Most Notorious Pirates

Set against the backdrop of the Age of Exploration, Black Flags, Blue Waters reveals the dramatic and surprising history of American piracy’s “Golden Age”—spanning the late 1600s through the early 1700s—when lawless pirates plied the coastal waters of North America and the Indian Ocean.

Bestselling author Eric Jay Dolin illustrates how American colonists at first supported these outrageous pirates in an early display of colonial solidarity against the Crown, and then violently opposed them. Upending popular misconceptions and cartoonish stereotypes, Black Flags, Blue Waters provides an account of the seafaring outlaws whose raids reflect the precarious nature of American colonial life.

Copies of the book will be on sale at the event.

Rooted in Our History: Medford’s Fascination with Trees

Rooted in Our History: Medford’s Fascination with Trees with Dee Morris

As he rejoiced in the green canopy shading many Medford streets, Charles Brooks (b. 1795) commented that beautiful trees “grace our eyes wherever we turn”. For decades, the Usher Elm on High Street was a landmark because it was thriving in 1775 when Paul Revere galloped by to warn the town about the approaching British. A row of gigantic trees once lined much of Salem Street. Oak Grove Cemetery used them to beautify its eternal landscape. In contrast, single specimens were set out to memorialize events, marriages and heroes. Trees also defined neighborhoods, being carefully nurtured by residents until great age, disease or the unforgiving march of progress brought them down.  Elizur Wright (b. 1804), in promoting the Middlesex Fells, wrote: “Whosoever works for the forests works for the happiness and permanence of our civilization”.

Our local history is very rich in great tree stories!

This program is included in the 2018 Arts Across Medford, a month-long festival held in October, sponsored by CACHE.

Medford Public Library invites 4th and 5th graders to join us each month. Snacks will be provided. If you come to the children's room, we can make sure you have a copy of the book to read in advance of our club meeting.

We will be discussing Erica Perl's novel When Life Gives You O.J.:

For years, 10-year-old Zelly Fried has tried has tried to convince her parents to let her have a dog. After all, practically everyone in Vermont owns a dog, and it sure could go a long way helping Zelly fit in since moving there from Brooklyn. But when her eccentric grandfather Ace hatches a ridiculous plan involving a "practice dog" named O.J., Zelly's not so sure how far she's willing to go to win a dog of her own. Is Ace's plan so crazy it just might work... or is it just plain crazy?

Medford Garden Club: Designing the Urban Garden

Gardening in an urban setting presents challenges beyond those of the typical suburban property. As Sally Naish, a certified landscape designer who tends an urban garden in Arlington, recognizes: space is limited; impermeable surfaces can create drainage issues; soil quality might be compromised; neighborhood noises of people and traffic can be intrusive. You recognize the issues, but don’t always see the solutions. Where to turn for help? Perhaps your lawn crew can do a quick fix, or do the issues warrant the services of a professional landscape designer or landscape architect?

With Sally’s expertise, we’ll look at who does what and offer some solutions to the challenges facing the urban gardener.
