We will be discussing Shaun Tan's Rules of Summer. It's all about the rules. But what if the rules feel completely arbitrary? What if your older brother is the only one who gets to make them up all summer long? And what if he's the only one who can save you when the darkness of winter comes rushing in?

Swing by the Children's Room to pick up a copy of the book before the club meets.  Please read the book in advance of the club meeting.

Snacks will be served.

eBook and Digital Library Workshops

Thursdays, 7-8 p.m. on June 21, July 19, August 23

Join us at any one of our eBook and Digital Library Workshops to learn how to borrow eBooks, Audiobooks, and access Digital Content with your library card from the comfort of your own home or on the go!  Patrons will learn how to borrow and access content using hoopla and OverDrive, learn how to access classic movies, documentaries, and independent films with kanopy, and meet Libby, a “personal librarian app” for OverDrive users!

We will also demonstrate how to access The Great Courses, language learning resources, and travel guides remotely. You’ll learn how to quickly and easily access streaming popular, classical, and jazz music. And we will show you how to access even more digital content via other Massachusetts Library Networks and libraries, including the Boston Public Library.

Attendees will find it helpful to bring your Medford Public Library Card (or the Minuteman App downloaded to your smartphone), as well as your portable device, but this is not required.

The Last Warlord: Lecture with Brian Glyn Williams

The Last Warlord: The Life and Legend of Dostum, the Afghan Warrior Who Led U.S. Special Forces To Topple the Taliban Regime with Brian Glyn Williams

Join author Brian Glyn Williams for this exciting history lecture.  Williams worked for the CIA in Afghanistan which gave him unprecedented access to General Abdul Rashid Dostum, one of the most powerful warlords in recent Afghani history. Williams will tell the story of Dostum’s rise from simple peasant villager to warrior against the repressive policies of the Taliban and Al Qaeda. The 2018 film -- 12 Strong: The Declassified Story of the Horse Soldiers – was partially based on Williams’ book about Dostum.

Williams has traveled extensively in Afghanistan tracking suicide bombers for the CIA's Counter Terrorism Center and doing PSYOPs (Psychological Operations) for the U.S. Army's secretive Joint Information Operations Warfare Command.  He is now a professor of Islamic History at UMass Dartmouth. His book The Last Warlord was published by Chicago Review Press in 2013.

Meet at the corner of High Street and Mystic Street at 10:00 AM on June 16, July 14, August 11

This Summer’s walking tours will explore West Medford’s lower Mystic Street. In the late 1860s, several lots on this road leading from High Street to the Mystic River were purchased by Civil War heroes. Norwood P. Hallowell and his brother, Edward, served as commanding officers of the famous 54th Massachusetts Regiment of black soldiers. Their households were called “The Colony” because of the lively interactions among children, friends, skilled staff and menagerie of pets. Come to Mystic Street to celebrate its vibrant past and to trace its colorful evolution into today’s busy neighborhood.

1st Grade Book Club

We will be discussing Marla Frazee's A Couple of Boys Have the Best Week Ever. When James and Eamon go to a week of Nature Camp and stay at Eamon's grandparents' house, it turns out that their free time spent staying inside, eating waffles, and playing video games is way more interesting than nature. But sometimes things work out best when they don't go exactly as planned.

An Afternoon with Rachel Revere

at the Medford Senior Center

101 Riverside Ave, Medford, MA 02155

Character re-enactor Jessa S. Piaia will present a living history portrayal of Rachel Revere, in this history program set in 1805.  Paul Revere married Rachel Walker within five months of the passing of his first wife.  Rachel took on the care of the children, and with Paul had six more of their own.  Rachel Revere was known as a woman of “forthright hospitality and remarkable good humour”.  The audience will meet Mrs. Revere on an afternoon in 1805, as she shares episodes of the Reveres’ life during and after the American Revolution.

Piaia studied performance at London’s Oval House Theatre and graduated from the University of Massachusetts in Boston. She performs at educational institutions, museums, libraries, worship services, and historical organizations throughout New England since 1992.

Community Read Event: The Wampanoag Thirteen Moons

From Past To Present: The Wampanoag Thirteen Moons with Darius Coombs, Plimoth Plantation

In this Community Read presentation, speaker Darius Coombs will talk about the Wampanoag's thirteen moon cycle and way of life that existed before the arrival of the Pilgrims interrupted Wampanoag culture. The talk will describe how European traders affected native culture, as well as major interactions with the Pilgrims and what these events mean to native people today. Coombs will also talk about Harvard University's first native graduating class of 1665 which helped bring back the Wampanoag language.

Darius Coombs,  a Mashpee Wampanoag, is known for his extraordinary dedication to sharing knowledge about Wampanoag cultural heritage. He has inspired the ongoing transformation of the interpretation and use of Plimoth Plantation's Wampanoag Homesite. In 2014 he was chosen for the New England Museum Association Excellence ward.  Additionally, one of his ancestors was a classmate of Caleb's at Harvard in the 17th century.
