In February we will be discussing Wendy Wan-Long Shang's novel The Great Wall of Lucy Wu.  Lucy Wu, aspiring basketball star and interior designer, is on the verge of having the best year of her life.  She's ready to rule the school as a sixth grader, go our for captain of the school basketall team, and take over the bedroom she has always shared with her sister.  In an instant, though, her plans are shattered when she finds out that Yi Po, her beloved granmother's sister is coming to visit for several months - and is staying in Lucy's room.  Lucy's vision of a perfect year begins to crumble, and it it's place come an unwelcome roommate, foiled birthday plans, a bully who tires to scare Lucy off the basketball team, and Chinese school with the annoying know-it-all Talent Chang.  Lucy's year is ruined - or is it?

Want to get an earlier start on your garden veggies? Gretel Anspach will teach about cold frames and hoop houses that are great season extenders allowing vegetables to be planted 2-4 weeks earlier than unprotected plants. Cold frames also play a key role in the transition of seedlings of all kinds from the sheltered windowsill/greenhouse environment to the outdoors. Learn how, where and when to use these interesting tools in your own garden.

Art Criticism Class

Art Criticism Class with Ely Delman

A six week class meeting March 6, March 20, April 3, April 17, May 1, May 15, May 29.

Do you love movies, books, and music? Have you ever wanted to write and publish reviews?  In March and April, learn the art of art criticism in a small workshop setting.  In this six week class, art journalist Ely Delman will teach you how to craft reviews of books, film, television, music and more. Students will workshop reviews together. 

Ely Delman has been writing about the arts for 15 years. He has published articles in RollingStone.com, Spin magazine, Relix magazine, among others. He has a master's degree in Arts Journalism from the Newhouse School at Syracuse University.

Art Criticism Class with Ely Delman

A six week class meeting March 6, March 20, April 3, April 17, May 1, May 15, May 29.

Do you love movies, books, and music? Have you ever wanted to write and publish reviews?  In March and April, learn the art of art criticism in a small workshop setting.  In this six week class, art journalist Ely Delman will teach you how to craft reviews of books, film, television, music and more. Students will workshop reviews together. 

Ely Delman has been writing about the arts for 15 years. He has published articles in RollingStone.com, Spin magazine, Relix magazine, among others. He has a master's degree in Arts Journalism from the Newhouse School at Syracuse University.

We will be discussing Anne Sibley O'Brien's I'm New Here. Three students are immigrants from Guatemala, Korea, and Somalia and have trouble speaking, writing, and sharing ideas in English in their new American elementary school. Through self-determination and with encouragement from their peers and teachers, the students learn to feel confident and comfortable in their new school without losing a sense of their home country, language, and identity.

Swing by the Children's Room to pick up a copy of the book before the club meets.  Please read the book in advance of the club meeting.

Have you ever wanted to write and publish reviews?  In March and April, learn the art of art criticism in a small workshop setting.  In this six week class, art journalist Ely Delman will teach you how to craft reviews of books, film, television, music and more. Rivers, Lakes, and Reservoirs: History of Drinking Water in Boston and Medford

Join Fred Laskey, executive director of the Mass. Water Resource Authority (MWRA) and a Medford garden club member, for a fascinating presentation on the history of our drinking water in Massachusetts, from the 17tth century cistern to the 20th century innovative water engineering in the creation of the Quabbin reservoir. He will also discuss Medford’s water with a brief history of its water system.

Have you ever wanted to write and publish reviews?  In March and April, learn the art of art criticism in a small workshop setting.  In this six week class, art journalist Ely Delman will teach you how to craft reviews of books, film, television, music and more. Students will workshop reviews together. 

Ely Delman has been writing about the arts for 15 years. He has published articles in RollingStone.com, Spin magazine, Relix magazine, among others. He has a master's degree in Arts Journalism from the Newhouse School at Syracuse University.

The 2017-2018 Great Books Group will read eight classic English novels, from Jane Austen to Thomas Hardy.  These are all acclaimed novels that have stood the test of time, and can be read and re-read with continued delight, amusement, and enlightenment.

Songs of Peace Concert

Celebrate the season of Earth Day with a concert of peace songs.  Instrumentalist and composer Sagit Zilberman will play and sing music and songs from Israel, Spain, Ireland, Africa and Iran. Sagit’s instruments include the Space Drum (a new instrument from Switzerland), the Didgeridoo, and Rainstick. Audience members will be encourage to interact and participate. 

This concert is appropriate for all ages. 

Sagit Zilberman is an internationally acclaimed multi-instrumentalist and composer. Originally from Israel, she has resided in the United States for the past 10 years, Sagit has performed in over 100 synagogues, churches, performance halls, clubs and festivals in Israel, Poland, Germany, Ukraine and the U.S., introducing her original compositions to a diverse audience.

Have henna applied to your hands by a professional artist! These tattoos will remain for 1-2 weeks, leaving you plenty of time to show off to your friends after April vacation!

Sign up is REQUIRED. In addition to signing up, you’ll need a permission slip signed by a parent or guardian. Permission slips will be available in April in the Teen Section and online. Permission slips must be turned in before the start of the program. This means that you can hold your spot by signing up here, but you will still need to have a permission slip signed.  You can turn the slip in before the program date or when you come to the program.
